Tibet has been under Chinese occupation for over 70 years. In January 2024, at the United Nations in Geneva, China’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) came under review to address the Communist Party’s repressive policies in Tibet. Tibetans called for China to be held accountable for massive attacks on Tibetan culture, Tibetan Buddhism, the Tibetan language and the Tibetan way of life. “This is the last photograph of His Holiness the Dalai Lama taken in free Tibet,” declared Heinrich Harrer. The year was 1951, and the communist Chinese army had already invaded eastern Tibet and was threatening to advance on Lhasa. Only 16 years old, the Dalai Lama had been installed as head of state two years earlier than the tradition because of the impending crisis. This is the image that began my exploration of the story of the color line, though it took many years to free the story from it. As with any portrait, there are two people in it—the subject and the photographer—and the photographer’s obvious admiration for this subject, a black man in the mid-1880s, more or less compelled me to discover its secret. Javan Emory was almost completely forgotten, but he mattered, and his remarkable story now frames the history of the color line, through Jackie Robinson, Don Newcombe, Roy Campanella, Johnny Wright, Roy Partlow, and all the others who made Martin Luther King’s job—in his own words—a little easier. #nikosMarkou The River serves both as a dreamy Arcadia and a live testimony of the human abuse of nature. Kifissos river runs throughout Athens and is the city’s longest body of water, springing from Penteli and Parnitha mountains. In Roman times the first aqueduct was constructed along its banks and over time Kifissos became a natural system of draining rainwater from the city. In the middle of the 20th century, as Athens was expanding, the river transformed drastically, invaded by highways, sewer systems and industries illegally established along its banks. Today, the river runs underneath, or adjacent to, all of the city’s major motorways, hidden and repressed by layers of concrete. To the north of Athens it bursts back into view; Vegetation is wild, with almost no signs of urbanism. There, the river survives stubbornly and the landscape appears again pristine, unchanged by the passing of time.
