Maia is currently studying at North Highland College and joined Inshes earlier this year. She obtained a degree in Animal Biology before completing her first year of vet nursing training in Dunfermline. She is enjoying nurse consults and inpatient care, and is looking forward to starting anaesthetics. Once qualified she would love to do further study on exotic species.🤩 Outside of work Maia enjoys exploring nature with her dog Snoop, crocheting, and looking after her rats Theodore and Rusty.🐾 #PHC #Pethealthclub #VNAM2024 #WhatVNsDo #20YearsOfVNAM

At Christchurch Veterinary Referrals, the nurses have the ability to run some inhouse laboratory tests - including blood and urine samples. In addition to the inhouse samples that we can run, we also have the ability to send specimen away to external laboratories for more in-depth and complex testing. If you would like your pet to be referred to us for their operation, we will need your vet to contact us. Please ask them to call us on 01473 230 999 for details. We take cases from throughout East Anglia at our purpose-built centre just outside Ipswich. Hi, my name is Claire and I am the Assistant Lead Nurse (Theatre) based at our small animal hospital in Frome. Although, you may see me at our other surgeries from time to time. I decided I wanted to train to be a Registered Veterinary Nurse at the age of 45. After completing an Access to Higher Education course, I went on to the University of Bristol to study for a degree in Veterinary Nursing and Bioveterinary Science. I graduated in 2020 and immediately started working for the Garston Veterinary Group. I have a special interest in Anaesthesia and Analgesia and have completed a further Nursing Certificate in this area since qualifying. My happy place is in the theatre, monitoring anaesthetics. A typical day for me is working closely with the vets and nurses in my team, discussing and deciding on the most appropriate anaesthetic protocols for each and every animal coming in for a procedure that day. I will be with each patient while we give them their premedication, and anaesthetic induction, while they are prepared for theatre, during their procedure, and when they wake up and during the early part of their recovery. I then hand their care over to our Day Patient Nurse, who will care for them for the remainder of their stay with us. From the time of the patient’s premed, I will be monitoring their heart rate, respiration rate, oxygen saturation levels, carbon dioxide levels, blood pressure, temperature, and ECG readings. From the information gained from this, I can inform the vet how well the patient is and whether further medication is needed. I enjoy every part of my job, especially learning more about anaesthesia and helping to train student VNs, researching new protocols and of course, spending time with our patients. #garatonvets #VNAM2024 #WhatVNsDo #20YearsOfVNAM #veterinarysurgery

Chirsty joined the Inshes team in January 2024, as a 2nd year veterinary nursing student at NHC Thurso. She is thoroughly enjoying getting stuck in to her lifelong dream of veterinary nursing, after spending the last 20 years in horticulture and gardening on private estates. Chirsty enjoys all aspects of veterinary nursing so far but currently working on wound management and laboratory work. 🤩 Her spare time is mostly spent exploring with her two rescue collies, Bill and Scully, and singing with a local Gaelic choir. 🐾 #PHC #Pethealthclub #VNAM2024 #WhatVNsDo #20YearsOfVNAM

How to become a RVN? 🤔 Is becoming a RVN something you have been interested in, but not sure how to get there? All our nurses have either been to college or university, and cannot qualify and become registered until several exams have been passed (written and practical), and have completed a minimum of 1800 hours in practice alongside a online recording log which requires them to be competent in various different tasks 😯 This can take between 2-4 years, depending if you have chosen a degree route, or via an apprenticeship route. RVN Amy has been qualified for 5 years and undertook her training as an apprentice - working at a local practice and going to college a day a week. #VNAM2024 #WhatVNsDo #20YearsOfVNAM

🌟 VVS RVN Spotlight 🌟 Steph, tell us a little bit about your RVN journey prior to joining VVS? I qualified in 2013 & have worked in first opinion, OOH, referral & Cyprus 😊 What do you love most about being a RVN? I have always loved the variety that the job brings, no day the same, and you can never quite predict how the day will go! This years theme for VN Awareness Month is Progression. How has working at VVS allowed you to progress? Working for VVS has allowed me to use my experience but apply it differently. It has also given me the opportunity to explore other interests and expand my knowledge and skills. Being an RVN has opened so many doors for me, and I'll always be grateful that I chose it as my career choice! 🌟🙌🌟 www.vvs.vet #VeterinaryNursingAwarenessMonth #VNAM #VNAM2024 #VVS #VeterinaryCardiology #RVN #StudentRVN #VetNurse #WhatVNsDo #20YearsOfVNAM #veterinarynurse #vetmed #veterinarymedicine #vetstudent @thebvnaltd

Vet Nursing Awareness Month 2024 - the role of the hospital nurse Once the patient leaves theatre and goes to the Ward they are handed over from the theatre nurse to the hospital nurse. The hospital nurse will be brought up to speed with the recovery so far following surgery and will then take over monitoring and managing the patient through their recovery. The hospital nurse undertakes a wide range of tasks such as continuing to monitor vital signs, administering medication, wound management and monitoring intravenous fluids and recording all of this on the hospital sheets - constantly reporting in to the operating vet surgeon on that day as required - as well as looking after the general needs of the patient. With dogs, once they are recovered sufficiently the hospital nurse will take them out for a small walk into our lovely garden so they can 'do their business' - all the time the nurse is monitoring to ensure they are back to normal, and if necessary report any concerns to the vet. #stationhousevets #independentvets #veterinarynurse #veterinarysurgeon #VNAM2024 #WhatVNsDo #20YearsOfVNAM

#vnam2024 It is MAY & an important time to raise awareness of Veterinary Nurses. I hope to share my personal story about career goals & progression as an RVN working as a Clinical Educator! Now...I have uploaded MANY photos for this post & the reflection of each image has reminded me to be #PROUD of how far I have come - despite facing some of the painful struggles, discrimination, and adversity. But it has lead me to where I am today! Whether you are an RVN in clinical practice or an RVN working in other careers e.g. teaching & academia - take time to reflect upon YOUR personal journey (even the obstacles!) & how it has helped to shape you into the professional you are today💚 ➡ Most will recognise the "clinical practice me" photo with my goofy Red Setter, Vyvyan. Whilst I adored my referral career, disability dictated my retirement as an active VN in 2020. ✅ The best career move that I ever made was into #academia & teaching vet & animal sciences. I was in my element of speaking, but I also learned how different CPD lecturing was to teaching a class full of students. It was a steep learning curve! ✅ Finally, along came my partner, Bowie, who is my Medical Alert Assistance Dog & he completely changed my life. I can live feeling secure & manage my disabilities. I have even regained some independence to do the things I LOVE 🐾 ✅ Bowie will tuck away under my desk in the office, accompany me in providing lectures, visit other animals to keep a hand in on handling (& stress release!), attend hospital stays, provide leg pain relief, & allow us to go hang out with our favourite band! Yes, I may not be in practice NOW...but my partnership with Bowie is setting me up well to go & spend days in referrals to nurture my love for surgery. I also have the confidence to keep going with my own business venture online to educate, inspire & support students & RVNs. 💙 For any RVNs living with disability or chronic illness - I hope this can inspire you or help to say "do not give up!" #20YearsOfVNAM #WhatVNsDo #BeProud #BeYourAuthenticSelf #Progress #VeterinaryNurseLife #VetNurse #VNAM2024 #AbilityNotDisability

🛫 Every year Veterinary Nursing students at WCUC have the opportunity to travel to South Africa to undertake a field trip of a lifetime. 🦏 This year the students will be visiting Waterberg region/Limpopo province. A 35,000ha privately managed game reserve with 12,000ha privately managed conservation area and home to the Big 5, as well as many other species. 🏕️ Not only will the students have the chance to learn in a practical setting and gain invaluable experience to take them forward in their own studies, but also stay on the reserve itself, wake up to see Rhinos, Elephants and more outside the tent! 💡As well as gaining an understanding of wildlife research and management that govern veterinary practices on the reserve the students will learn more about a wildlife vets role and responsibilities. The trips expose participants to behind the scenes wildlife conservation and veterinary work, including immobilisation and capture techniques used for various wildlife species and rhino protection through Veterinary Management Conservation Research. 💬 “My top highlight from the course so far has got to be the trip to South Africa Summer 2022. During this time we got to spend two incredible weeks at Welgevonden Research Camp where we saw some amazing animals, assisted with rhino conservation and got hands-on with a Cape Buffalo and a White Rhino when assisting the veterinary team with interventions. I even got to ear notch one of the rhinos for identification and to contribute to anti-poaching efforts. It was honestly the trip of a lifetime and I will never forget it!" 💚 Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month 💚 Our role is often misunderstood amongst the general public, so here's a brief post to raise awareness of the vital role we play in the veterinary profession. We are Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVN) but our title is still not protected. This means that anybody can care for your pet and call themselves a veterinary nurse! Help get your pet into the best hands they deserve by raising awareness! Every share may help get our title recognised and help protect your pet 🙏 #veterinarynurse #vetnurse #vetnurses #vnam #vnam2024 #vetnursesofinstagram #vetnursestudent #vet #veterinary #bvna #whatvnsdo #20yearsofvnam

👨‍⚕️👩‍⚕️ Student Veterinary Nurses are working towards completing a qualification with a college or a university to become Registered Veterinary Nurses. While training, our students enrol in the RCVS and complete practical training. Practical experience is a vital part of veterinary nurse training for our students. Our practice team supports them, providing supervision and guidance to assist them with developing their knowledge and clinical skills. This experience, alongside their qualification, prepares them to complete the roles that a Registered Veterinary Nurse undertakes. When aspiring to become a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN), you have two distinct paths to choose from. You can either pursue a vocational (diploma) route, which offers an on-the-job training option. You can also complete a higher education (degree) route, which provides you with the opportunity to experience university life whilst training. Both routes lead to registration as a veterinary nurse with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). We encourage progression and growth and enjoy celebrating our Student Veterinary Nurses when they graduate and become a Registered Veterinary Nurse. In these photos, our student nurse, Eloise is preparing for her OSKEs (Practical examinations) with our Registered Veterinary Nurse, Gemma. #VNAM #VNAM2024 #WhatVNsDo #20YearsOfVNAM #garstonvets #garstonveterinarygroup #Veterinarysurgery #studentveterinarynurse #svn

Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month💚👩🏻‍⚕️ One of the many jobs our nurses do that makes them heroes includes hand rearing🐶🐱 We are lucky at Walton Lodge that we have a nurse with extensive knowledge and experience with hand rearing and is always around to support any patients needing hand rearing. 🐾🤍🩺 Hand rearing is an incredibly delicate and time consuming task, in the first days of a puppy or kittens life they need round the clock care which can include: -feeding every 1-2 hours, consuming sometimes as little as 0.5ml per feed! -stimulation to pass wee and poo -continuous environmental temperature monitoring to ensure the environment is warm enough for them and not to humid Did you know that special care must also be taken with things such as the position for feeding? Ideally puppy’s and kittens should be fed at a 45 degree angle with there head facing up to avoid aspiration neumonia. Kittens are also especially delicate as there digestive system and kidneys take longer to fully develop then puppy’s, meaning that they are more likely to develop a runny tummy, and can easily go into kidney failure if they are provided to much ‘food’ to soon. Hand rearing is something that can take years to master and those with extensive experience often still struggle. #whatvnsdo #vnam2024 #20yearsofvnam

🌟 VVS RVN Spotlight 🌟 Abi, tell us a little bit about your RVN journey prior to joining VVS? I joined VVS two years ago, and prior to this worked in a busy first opinion practice in sunny Cornwall. For a big part of my time there, I was a sole charge night nurse. I did really love my nocturnal years (crazy I know)! 🦉 What do you love most about being a RVN? I love the friendships I have built through my career, nothing brings you closer to your colleagues than literal blood, sweat and tears 💕 This years theme for VN Awareness Month is Progression. How has working at VVS allowed you to progress? I have completely diversified my career in a direction I would not have known was possible before joining VVS. If you had told me I would now be working from home, helping vets all across the world access specialist level care I would never have believed you. I have built a whole different skillset to that which I had in clinical practice and I have loved my journey so far 🌟 www.vvs.vet #VeterinaryNursingAwarenessMonth #VNAM #VNAM2024 #VVS #VeterinaryCardiology #RVN #StudentRVN #VetNurse #WhatVNsDo #20YearsOfVNAM #veterinarynurse #vetmed #veterinarymedicine #vetstudent @thebvnaltd

Vet Nursing Awareness 2024 - the role of the theatre nurse The main purpose of the role of the theatre nurse is to prepare and manage the patient before and during surgery - perform appropriate tests and take vital measurements required prior to surgery - prepare the patient for surgery under the instruction of the vet - ensure suitable equipment is available ready for surgery - opening surgical equipment as required for the vet - monitor anaesthesia throughout the procedure - monitor vital signs during the procedure and communicate them to the vet ongoing - administer pain medication and antibiotics during the procedure (when necessary, and as directed by the vet) As the surgery comes to a close, the theatre nurse will gain all the required information from the vet regarding post-operative care, plus medications needed, and ensures these are noted on the hospitalisation sheet. The patient is taken back to the ward, where the surgical nurse hands the case over to the hospital nurse. #stationhousevets #independentvets #veterinarynurse #veterinarysurgeon #VNAM2024 #WhatVNsDo #20YearsOfVNAM

⭐ Join us to celebrate #20YearsOfVNAM! 🎉 Every year during the month of May, the veterinary profession celebrates Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month (VNAM), proudly spearheaded by the BVNA. In 2024, we celebrate 20 years since the campaign began – from its early beginnings as Veterinary Nursing Awareness Day from 2004, and since 2012 we’ve been campaigning for the whole month. This year, the campaign theme is ‘Progression’ – with the aim of highlighting the diverse range of skills, abilities and career pathways of veterinary nurses. We’ll also be raising awareness amongst the public about why protecting the ‘veterinary nurse’ title is so crucial. #vnam2024 #whatvnsdo #20yearsofvnam @thebvnaltd

This #VNAM we’re talking to our amazing nursing team about their career progression 🐾 Today we caught up with one of our first year student nurses, lovely Lara. Lara started with us in 2022 as an animal nursing assistant (ANA), and has progressed to a Student Veterinary Nurse (SVN) 🩺 Here’s what Lara had to say about her journey from ANA to SVN, and what it’s like studying whilst working full time: “I started as an ANA in May 2022 after finishing college, and began learning all the ins and outs of the veterinary practice. Being an ANA gave me a year to learn how to care for and handle patients, so once I started my nursing training I felt very relaxed and eager to be able to do more! Once I started my nursing training I was very keen to develop new skills and grow within my role, to eventually be able to do my dream job as an RVN. As an SVN it’s very rewarding to be there for patients and meet their needs whilst they are hospitalised with us, and equally when they’re just in for a quick visit. My favourite part of nursing is being able to be there for patients and clients in all circumstances, and being able to learn new things all the time. Studying while working can be challenging at times, but when it’s something you’ve always wanted to do it’s worth it!” Thanks to Lara for sharing her inspiring veterinary nursing story with us, keep following along to hear more from our fantastic nursing team about their career progression this Veterinary Nursing Awareness month 💚 #VNAM2024 #WhatVNsDo #20YearsOfVNAM

👋 Join us in celebrating Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month as we shine a spotlight on Tia Marron-Dawson, one of our wonderful Patient Care Assistants (PCA). Tia's journey into the world of veterinary care is owed to her lifelong passion for animals. Despite facing challenges in entering the veterinary industry, she grabbed the opportunity to join us as a PCA, viewing it as the perfect stepping stone towards her dream of becoming a veterinary nurse. What Tia enjoys the most about her role as a PCA is the opportunity to immerse herself in every aspect of veterinary practice, from assisting with x-rays and ultrasounds to helping in the theatre. She finds joy in learning and likes every opportunity to expand her knowledge, even finding fun in tasks like preparing medications. Describing her role, Tia highlights that as a PCA, she supports the vets and nurses with day-to-day duties within the practice. Tia, your passion and drive inspire us all! What do our Veterinary Nurses Do? One of their roles is to monitor patients who are under sedation or general anaesthesia. This is vital to ensure the safety of patients while the Veterinary Surgeon can complete the procedure. Our veterinary nurses monitor vitals including heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation and temperature. They will liaise with vet about any concerns and address any issues that arise so the vet can continue their procedure. #VNAM2024 #bvna #felineonly #whatVNsdo #20YearsOfVNAM
