AND THEN, the baby chicks will be named. Well, I've picked their names, I just need to reveal their names. This is #harleythelittlepecker. I called her little pecker walking around the store after we picked them out, making sure we had everything to set up their brooder, because she pecked that box, AND the brooder. ALL. DAY. LONG. She has been an ahole since the beginning. But she's finally warmed up to us after she got sick. Her and #nelliethechickie (RIP) were my runners. They were always the last two to be caught, and they didn't want to be caught. And now, if she escapes the run, she's just out in the open all day. When we'd take them in the backyard to let them out of the brooder, she had a tendency to squeeze through the barriers we put up and get stuck under the deck. Deck boards were removed on multiple occasions to get her out. Definitely a little pecker. Now she's always scratching by the road and can fly out if the run if there's no top. My boyfriend named her Harley because she had a fat stripe all the way down her back. As baby chicks, she looked very similar to #mysweetgirltawny (picture 9), but Tawny's stripe wasn't complete around her neck. Now, they don't look anything alike. It's a beautiful morning for a #30daysof30animals because #thisismyflockinglife. Meet Huey of #hueydeweyandlouietheducks. Obviously we can't have nice things (in the coop) when the ducks are around. I couldn't figure out why the coop floor was constantly wet. I knew it rained, but it was pretty bad around their water bowl. Found the culprit. After we brought home Louie and Nugget, I sought out companionship for our lone #duck. I found someone who had #blackcayuga. I picked out Huey, and then my boyfriend asked me if I wanted two, and well, it became the trio we now have. Huey is the more likely of those two to seek me out for treats, but still stares and quacks at me from a good distance. The place we got them from looked like a hoarder. It was pretty rough. Dewey even suffered leg issues from Niacin deficiency. But they're living a much better life now. I'm unsure if she's my girl who lays shell-less eggs or not, but one of them does have problems. It's a sad day here at the Taj MaChicken. Today, we said goodbye to #mygirltarmac. I've been slacking on doing the introductions of the animals for #30daysof30animals for #thisismyflockinglife, because, well, life happens. I named her Tarmac because I used to be an aircraft mechanic. She was unique, and so was her name. She was always squawking that she hadn't gotten enough treats (see the video), and would almost take your finger off to get that snack. Definitely my girl with the best #restinghenface. Oh Tarmac, you will be missed 😭💔💔💔 Out of the 6 #wyandottes we originally got back in April, we're now down to 1. And it almost wants me to bring [Cricket] in and make her my #housechicken because they're the only girls we've lost, so there must be something wrong with the bloodline? Sophia has that "oh sh*t" look on her face in most of her recent pictures because she's usually doing something she isn't supposed to. Like playing by the street or in the neighbor's yard. She is a troublemaker for sure and keeps us on our toes. But, she's a sweetie who usually is content foraging all day and doesn't squawk for treats. When she was little, her and Charlie looked almost identical and it was difficult for the longest time to tell them apart. Another episode of #30daysof30animals because #thisismyflockinglife. This is #RingoRooster. Unfortunately, Ringo won't be with us much longer. He has agression problems, and as much as we've worked with him, he poses a threat to the other animals and humans. Although he can be so good to the girls at times, making sure they get treats and alerting them to danger, other times he's downright mean. I've heard that new chicken owners shouldn't have roosters, and he was a surprise in the pullet bin. We try our best to give all our animals a loving home, but we have to think of the well being of the rest of the animals, and he disrupts this for many at times. Another #30daysof30animals because #thisismyflockinglife. Meet #clarabellethechickie. Clarabelle is at the bottom of the pecking order. She's a sweetie, but won't let us hold her anymore. I had the hardest time telling her apart from the two other #eastereggers she resembles when she started to get feathers (she was distinctly colored as a chick) but her #blackbeard sets her apart. Clarabelle wants to fit in, but knows her place. She will chase the cats and other birds in the yard. She even lets Nugget peck her. I always try to give her treats but the other girls snatch them away, but on occasion she will jump in our lap. It's another #30daysof30animals because #thisismyflockinglife. Today's focus is on Dewey of #hueydeweyandlouietheducks. There's no way to put this, but Dewey is dumb. She will run around the kiddie pool and can't figure out how to get in 😶 and refuses help. LORT help this child. We only planned on getting 1 more duck, as a companion for Louie, but my boyfriend agreed to two at the last minute and that's how we ended up with Dewey. She's not overly friendly, and won't come to us for treats, but she also isn't chasing away the chickens. She mostly just looks at me from afar. Dewey suffered an injury created by a Niacin deficiency from her previous home. It took several weeks for her to get back to normal, but she doesn't seem to have any long term leg problems because of it. This is day 11 of #30daysof30animals because #thisismyflockinglife. Meet #hogantheaholekitty. Hogan was abandoned at my boyfriend's work, and we decided to take him in. He was a sweet kitty at first, but after a couple vet visits to get him well and neutered, his personality completely changed. Sometimes he disappears for a couple days at a time (I swear he has a second family), but comes back starving. Then I think he's a useless #mouser, incapable of catching his own food, then my boyfriend shows me a picture of him carrying a squirrel out of the woods. He is the favorite cat for the #chickens to chase. At first it was funny because he would stalk them, but the girls are relentless. She was growing a comb and wattles at a young age. She had a mohawk instead of the pretty crest... it was an honest assumption. Winger was named after a #billmurray character in Stripes. She is quite the loner, but if there is a cat around, she is always first in line to harass them. This is Louie of #hueydeweyandlouietheducks. Since I typically don't get them alone, I never came up with their own individual hashtags. And for a while there, it was always Louie and Nugget. We ended up with Louie because someone got in over their heads. We knew nothing about ducks, but learned quickly. He lives happily with our two other ducks, and our #ducken. When Charlie was a little chickie, she got sick, and was handled a lot. There were some sleepless nights, where she slept on our chest. Now, she's the first to jump in a lap for a treat. She can get jealous of another chicken getting her food, and has been known to peck your leg to let you know she wants attention. Charlie is a sweet chickie, but can stand her ground when it comes to the other girls/ducks messing with her. She's a #badmotherclucker. She was always an indoor cat until we moved to the country but now loves her time outdoors. She's needy. She's mouthy. She can't catch anything. And has a foot fetish. Day 5 of #30daysof30animals because #thisismyflockinglife. I saved #steviemysweetie for today. I gave her the name Stevie after one of my favorite actors, #SteveBuscemi. Not only is he an amazing actor, he was a #firefighter who volunteered after #911🇺🇸 Stevie is possibly one of my most photographed chickens. When she was a baby, she would cry #inthebrooder because the bigger girls wouldn't let her snuggle, so I ended up holding her a lot. There were many exhausting nights. Now, she only wants in my lap for snacks. She likes to harass the cats, and eat. Although she's high on the pecking order, she stands in the back of the group and waits for treats, but will peck the other girls at the food bowl. She's still uncertain about being held, but once she's on your lap, she loves being petted. We originally had 6 #slw, but 3 didn't make it out of the brooder, and then we lost one a few weeks ago to a predator.
