@archdigestindia’s May-June 2024 cover story is, at its surface, a nostalgia piece. It is a discreet home in Ahmedabad, built in the 1970s, restored last year by #AD100 designer Kunal Shah (@kunalshahdesigns) with the intent to stay true to its origin. It is someone’s grandfather’s home, yet it is also all our homes. A generation of Indians have grown up in spaces like this: a low-set bungalow, not too large, human scale, with excellent proportions, a line of sight, a front veranda to catch the morning sun and a back veranda for privacy, a staircase with a curved balustrade, steel almirahs, crocheted table covers, wooden cabinets full of trophies, photographs, and souvenirs. A familiarity exists in these kinds of homes. When you go back, you slip into your childhood, unconsciously and effortlessly. Your language, if you belong from there, switches to the local dialect and just the passing of the day returns to, let’s say, the ’80s. It’s a softer version of modernism, crafted to suit our local domestic rituals. And as we discover, making sustainable choices is the natural order in such homes. So for this summer issue cover, AD steps away from an overstatement that design can sometimes be, to look at a designer’s light interventions in an existing home celebrating an enduring idea of modernism specific to India. This modernist home in Ahmedabad, built in the 1970s and restored recently by #AD100 architect Kunal Shah (@kunalshahdesigns) is a reminder of a classic domestic architecture that an entire generation of Indians grew up in — a modernism that is timeless, that we adapted to suit our culture, climate, materials and our domestic rituals. This is Fouzdar, a grandfather’s home. There is a Gandhian austerity to the space, particularly in what used to be the grandmother’s room. All over the home, there are handwoven carpets in natural materials like hemp, old-fashioned palangs or high daybeds, as well as floor gaddis. Shah believes in a refined minimalism, in a modernism that was about simplicity and being rooted in domestic rituals. Spaces in the house allow for informal postures, as opposed to sitting formally on a table and chair. “You can sit cross-legged, lie down, take a nap, read your paper. It’s keeping in mind a certain lifestyle, a Gujarati way of living, where you come home in the afternoon when it’s bright and hot, and you rest and recline, chat, play a card or board game. Bayt Yakan, a 17th-century palace in historic Cairo, has been meticulously renovated by Alaa el-Habashi, an architectural conservator, and his wife Ola Said. This house was a decaying relic when it was inhabited by a butcher and his family. Despite its dilapidated state, its historical significance was undeniable, as it had connections to Muhammad Ali Pasha, who ruled Egypt from 1805 to 1848, and his nephews. Locals fondly called it “the dump yard.” The butcher’s family received offers to demolish it for high-rise apartments, but guided by its history, el-Habashi and Ola rescued it from the threat of a wrecking ball. Our May-June 2024 cover story is, at its surface, a nostalgia piece. It is a discreet home in Ahmedabad, built in the 1970s, restored last year by #AD100 designer Kunal Shah (@kunalshahdesigns) with the intent to stay true to its origin. It is someone’s grandfather’s home, yet it is also all our homes. A generation of Indians have grown up in spaces like this: a low-set bungalow, not too large, human scale, with excellent proportions, a line of sight, a front veranda to catch the morning sun and a back veranda for privacy, a staircase with a curved balustrade, steel almirahs, crocheted table covers, wooden cabinets full of trophies, photographs, and souvenirs. A familiarity exists in these kinds of homes. When you go back, you slip into your childhood, unconsciously and effortlessly. Your language, if you belong from there, switches to the local dialect and just the passing of the day returns to, let’s say, the ’80s. It’s a softer version of modernism, crafted to suit our local domestic rituals. And as we discover, making sustainable choices is the natural order in such homes. So for this summer issue cover, we step away from an overstatement that design can sometimes be, to look at a designer’s light interventions in an existing home celebrating an enduring idea of modernism specific to India. Architect giulianoandreadelluva and his well-travelled client Giorgia D’Apuzzo, both deeply rooted in Naples, sought to capture the city's unique dynamics and aesthetics in her 3,700-square-foot historic apartment in Chiaia. This endeavor involved a skillful blend of ancient and contemporary art, vivid and subdued colors, and historical and modern materials. In a sentimental nod to the Fusco family, who commissioned the building and whose descendants still inhabit the rest of its apartments, a pair of oil portraits depicting Fusco ancestors hang near the entryway. Andrea developed a Pompeii-inspired palette, working with master painter Nicola Dublino to lacquer them in strategically placed blues, greens, yellows, ochres and reds. The reflective surfaces provide compelling backgrounds for D’Apuzzo’s art collection, an eclectic blend of 1860s oil paintings and modern and contemporary works by Sol LeWitt, Robert Barry and David Tremlett. This stunning lamp, model SP15, was designed by Gino Sarfatti for Arteluce in Italy in the 1950's/1960's. It is made out of polished chrome and has a very solid and easy construction by 'clicking' the fixture onto the mounting plate. This light works very well as either a wall or ceiling light. We have 10 of these lamps available, all in a very good condition with minor signs of age and use. Eight of the lamps are labelled with the early and original label of Arteluce at the back of the mounting plate, 1 has a partial label and another 1 does not carry a label. The early label makes them quite rare as we have only found this model with new labels. We have imported these lights from Italy where these were used on the sides of a large glass mirror. The founder of Jamb London, Will Fisher, has a Georgian townhouse in Spitalfields (more on Spitalfields architecture later). It's an exemplar of Georgian architecture. Jamb is of course well-known for the finest antique and reproduction fireplaces, fire grates, and antique-style lighting. I hope to own a Jamb fireplace in my future Georgian flat. I must remain patience but seriously I want one now! The house itself is pretty straightforward. It has a drawing room on the first floor and two bedrooms on the second and third floors, each taking up the whole width of the house. The practical parts of the house are at the back, in an L-shape. There's a dining room and kitchen connected to the drawing room, and dressing rooms and bathrooms near the bedrooms. The biggest addition is the roof terrace, added by Will and his wife Charlotte, which fits well with the rest of the house. Enjoy these sumptuous pictures. . . .
