Now that doesn’t mean the work has to tell about real life…I mean it can be abstract or anything…but the vitality is taken out of real living.”— Alice Neel The art of visual representation has evolved since the earliest cave pictographs, reflecting humanity’s profound engagement with life’s myriad experiences. Through the ages, artists have continually refined their skills across various mediums to capture the essence of human relationships, love, and cultural uniqueness. In 2020, global events led to a significant shift in our daily lives, disrupting the natural flow of human connection. While digital platforms facilitated work and commerce, the absence of physical interactions with loved ones left a void. Many artists turned to memories and photographs, creating artworks that reminisced about times of connection and togetherness. Some delved into introspection, producing pieces that juxtaposed complex emotions. Personally, the isolation was mentally and physically taxing. Every movie and tv show started to become bland, and the concept of time started to slip away. However, waking every morning, still wrapped in my blankets, the sight of a painting I have on my wall by Keywan Tafteh depicting an embrace gave me solace, and made me pull my blanket even tighter. On another wall, a large painting by Enchi portrays strong women amidst soft florals evoked cherished memories of impactful women in my life. These paintings were my mood boosters and helped me roll myself out of bed. With this group exhibition, I aim to share these uplifting sentiments with you, the audience. “Better Together” is a call for human connection and an uplifting spirit of solidarity through figurative paintings by @dahnniii @enchi.art @keywantafteh @mister_toledo @chickentasteslikewood @tinyriot_ @aschulte_75 “Better Together” will be on display at Gallery IDOLWILD from May 4 to June 1, 2024. A stunning series of cast-glass sculptures by Roni Horn is being exhihited for the first time at @hauserwirth in New York until June 28th. I’ve long admired her sculptural works online but seeing them in person was truly special! Each has a unique level of opacity and responds to light in different ways, feeling somehow beyond human. A series of new drawings titled ‘Slarips’ (the word ‘spirals’ written in reverse), is also exhibited. Horn began by making watercolor spirals in an array of hues, before cutting up the painted images and collaging them together into new tessellated compositions.

Walaupun mereka masing-masing bekerja melalui material yang berbeda, mereka mengembangkan bentuk-bentuknya dari ingatan dan pengalaman secara organik tanpa bingkai konsepsi yang telah dicanangkan terlebih dahulu, kesamaan – kesamaan ditemukan lebih didasari pada kerja didalam kerja studio bersama. Menurut mereka keterbukaan terhadap ketidakpastian selama proses tersebutlah yang menentukan perilaku, keputusan artistik yang berdampak pada bentuk, struktur, konsep, hingga konteks yang terbangun. Hal yang kemudian dihadapi ialah bagaimana mengelola temuan yang berlangsung dalam proses penciptaan tidak kehilangan intensitasnya pada karya yang dianggap telah selesai digarap. Pertimbangan ini bisa jadi dan kerap tidak secara sadar dikelola dalam proses penciptaan. artinya, proses penciptaan yang demikian tidak hanya menyoal penaklukan material dan teknik, tetapi juga bagaimana interaksi dengan material membukakan cara pandang lain dalam menyikapi realitas. Pada kesadaran inilah intensitas yang mulanya berada pada proses penciptaan bisa hadir pada karya yang dianggap selesai digarap. Judul dalam pameran ini “Troublemaker Doppelgänger”, merupakan ajuan kedua seniman untuk menggambarkan mencari-cari masalah yang disengaja maupun tidak untuk dipecahkan. Istilah “Doppelgänger” menurut beberapa sumber adalah pantulan diri seseorang dengan melihat dirinya sendiri tetapi bukan karena melalui pantulan cermin atau bayangan. Ia bertemu dengan fisik tubuhnya sendiri. Maka karya-karya yang ditampilkan mereka berdua bisa menjadi menjadi pantulan “ketubuhan” : fisik dan alam pikiran mereka selama apa yang dilakukan di studio. It is the first exhibition by a contemporary artist to take place at The Courtauld since it reopened in November 2021 following its acclaimed redevelopment. Since relocating to London, Doig has been developing paintings started in Trinidad, New York and elsewhere, which have been worked up alongside completely fresh paintings, including a new London subject. The works produced for the exhibition at The Courtauld convey this particularly creative experience of transition, as Doig explores a rich variety of places, people, memories and ways of painting. He has long admired the collection of The Courtauld Gallery and the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists who are at its heart have been a touchstone for Doig’s own painting and printmaking over the course of his career. Visitors will be able to consider Doig’s contemporary works in the light of paintings by earlier artists in The Courtauld’s collection that are important for him, such as those by Cézanne, Gauguin, Manet, Monet, Pissarro and Van Gogh.
