Dr Judy Eaton is a clinical psychologist with vast experience of working with autistic girls and women, and runs the very well-respected Help For Psychology. We know that autism presents in a multitude of different and highly nuanced ways – particularly as it intersects with variance in class, gender, race and age. Misunderstanding and misinformation around variant and differing presentations means that misdiagnosed individuals and those who do not receive a diagnosis at all are often failed by medical, education, social care and criminal justice systems. Join us as we chat to Judy about how she, like us, is trying to change that. I am so honored to be talking with Cathy Wassell of @AutisticGirlsNetwork tomorrow (Thurs Aug 17). I have so much to say about the experience of being young and autistic (and, in my case, undiagnosed, until middle age!). My passion, special interest, and joy, is in creating stories that lift up autistic/neurodivergent representation. I figure that is how I can help -- by creating stories that show our young NDs and auties their reflection in fiction, that show them they exist in the world, that they play a role, have a place. That they matter. The photos here include the covers of my two most recent books: #TheFireTheWaterandMaudieMcGinn, a children's novel, which just came out just last month. #AdaandZaz, a chapter book, which will pub Sept 4 in the UK, and Dec 1 in the US. It is part of a wonderful #neurodivergent series of books being put out by the wonderful team at @harpercollinsuk @bigcatbookslikeme, and illustrated by the amazing @theorahart! Both books with autistic/neurodivergent main characters. Last slide is Cathy Wessell's tremendous new guide -- I have just finished reading it, and it is INVALUABLE. It collects so much up-to-date wisdom. Please tune into our Webinar Thursday! Thurs Aug 17 9 am EST, 12 noon PST, 8pm UK time. Check @autisticgirlsnetwork for the link. And follow them! Sarah O'Brien wrote her book So, I’m Autistic*, for autistic young people who are navigating a diagnosis, whether that's a clinical diagnosis or self-diagnosis. She was inspired to write it because there wasn’t anything that felt appropriate for autistic women and girls when she was diagnosed nearly a decade ago. The book aims to support autistic young people, and their parents, to find comfort, help build a strong and happy autistic identity and feel a bit more sure about themselves. Sarah has been a member of the Autistic Girls Network Facebook group since March 2019 and writes that she has found wonderful solidarity and strength there. We often get asked when we're going to do an event ourselves, and we're certainly asked a lot of questions! So we decided to combine the two and celebrate both the first birthday of our white paper Autism, Girls and Keeping it All Inside and International Womens' Day with you all. CEO Cathy Wassell will be joined by Co-Chair Claire Farmer and our trustee Emily Katy to answer your questions - no sneaky thinking up impossible questions to answer though! Cathy runs AGN - you could probably say it was her special interest. She runs a completely neurodivergent household too, published a book in December called Nurturing Your Autistic Young Person and is (hopefully) finishing her Masters dissertation this year on an internal presentation of autism. Claire is Co-Chair of Autistic Girls Network. She is a former special school and mainstream headteacher and now runs her own business NeuroDIVE Limited, supporting organisations to understand, develop and invest in genuine neuroinclusive workplaces. Claire is a professional coach accredited with International Coaching Federation and works with executives to help them hone their leadership skills, specialising - though not exclusively - with those who identify as neurodivergent. She is currently writing a book about neurodivergence in the workplace for Jessica Kingsley Publishing; the 'Academic, Educational and Professional Publisher of the Year.' Claire has lived experience as a late-diagnosed Autistic woman. Emily was diagnosed autistic as a teen in crisis, and joined us when AGN was just beginning as a charity, as a young trustee. Since then she has graduated as a Mental Health nurse and now works with children and young people. She is also an inspirational autism advocate on social media with a much bigger following than Autistic Girls Network!
