One of the hardest things about parenting a child with ADHD is getting your child to do what you ask. ADHD symptomsā€”trouble paying attention, being impulsive, and being hyperactiveā€”can get in the way of understanding and following instructions. But if your child learns how to overcome or adapt to their symptoms, they can develop the skills needed for success in life. One tip to help your child overcoming ADHD symptoms is to set daily routines. An action becomes a habit through continual reminders and repetition. For example, brushing teeth eventually becomes a habit when you repeatedly remind the child to do it twice a day, such as after breakfast and before going to bed. Write down your daily routines and post them where you will see them often. It will help your child if you use colorful pictures, such as a picture of a toothbrush, to identify routines. #ABA #ABAtherapy #ABAtherapist #BCBA #BCBAtherapist #Autism #AppliedBehaviorAnalysis #AutismHope #AutismSpectrumDisorder #AutismParent #AutismParenting #AutismMom #AutismTherapy #AutismTherapist #AutismSupport #AutismAwareness #ABAjobs #BehaviorTherapy #BehaviorTherapist #BehaviorTherapyJobs #BehaviorIsCommunication #AutismDiagnosis #ParentSupport #SpecialNeeds #NonVerbalAutism

Thereā€™s been many times in the last 15 years that Iā€™ve felt alone. Autism, disability, being a single parent, dementia, Parkinsonā€™s. Moments, days, weeks where Iā€™ve felt like nobody is living a life like mine, that no one else understands. At some of my lowest moments I turned to social media, first through reading other peopleā€™s experiences, then through sharing my own on here. And I soon realised that I wasnā€™t ever really alone. That there were so many other people out there living, and going through very similar experiences to my own. And by connecting with them, whether by message, zoom chats, voice notes, coffee mornings or meet ups, I discovered a community of people I never knew I needed. People not too far from me. People on the other side of the world. Distance doesnā€™t matter. Iā€™ve shared stories on here for around 8 years, and the comments and messages that put the biggest smile on my face are when people tell me they feel less alone because of something Iā€™ve posted. Thatā€™s whatā€™s inspired the Never Alone collection. A thank you for all the support youā€™ve shown me and my boys over the years. For the parents and carers who have felt lonely as theyā€™ve been battling to do all they can to give their kids the best life they can. For the autistic kids and adults who have seen something in Jude and Tommyā€™s stories, that resonated and made them feel less alone. For anyone, who needs a little reminder now and again that there are others who care, can relate, and want the best for them. Whether itā€™s for your child, a family member, friend, or even a reminder to ourselves when we need it. All you ever need to do is glance down at your left wrist and youā€™ll get a little message from us that youā€™re ā€œNever alone.ā€ ā¤ļø #neveralone #autismfamily #autismparenting #autismdad #autismmom

NEW EPISODE: ADVOCATING FOR RIGHTFUL INCLUSION IN SCHOOL This weekā€™s podcast features Kim Kredich who has served as a volunteer advocate for hundreds and hundreds of students with disabilities in East Tennessee, working with families to help their children gain rightful, supported inclusion in the general education environment in public schools through the IEP process. She has worked closely with attorneys in Tennessee to promote systemic change and awareness of the rights of people with disabilities. Kim is a wealth of knowledge about inclusion and the law. She knows IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act)* as this is all sheā€™s done for the last 20 years. Kim is not an attorney and does not give legal advice, but knows about inclusion in the United States public school system. Kimā€™s family found DIRFloortime very early on when her son was 2 1/2. She wrote a Floortime song CIRCLES AROUND THE SON over the span of 20 years that was recorded in 2021 when her son, Ben, had come full circle into a life of independent living with supports, having job opportunities, and having attended 4 years of college in the University of Tennessee Future Program, an inclusive, post-secondary opportunity for students with intellectual disabilities and autism. Sadly last summer Ben, at the age of 24, was killed instantly from behind by an impaired driver while walking on a sidewalk towards downtown Knoxville. If you havenā€™t already, please view the familyā€™s website dedicated to Ben where you can view the recorded live stream of the Celebration of Life and hear the familyā€™s heartfelt descriptions of their life with Ben, which was so influenced by Floortimeā€“especially Kimā€™s talk, which described the Floortime journey and introduced her Floortime song, Circles around the Son.

The Supreme Court of India, in a move emphasizing inclusivity, has stated that refusing child-care leave to a mother caring for a child with disabilities would breach the constitutional obligation of the State to ensure equal female workforce participation. Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud and Justice J B Pardiwala, on hearing a petition from an assistant professor in Himachal Pradesh, affirmed that denying such leave is not a privilege but a constitutional mandate. The court directed the state authorities to review the petitioner's request, emphasizing the importance of aligning state policies with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. . . #disabilityawareness #parenting #genderbias #caregiving #womenatwork #supremecourtofindia #autism #autismparenting #disabiltyrights

Movement is life, movement is medicine. Around the globe, Alpine skiing has been known to have a powerful impact on kids with developmental disorders. And in 2014 a Dream League was born, when nine children with various diagnoses, including cerebral palsy, autism, Down syndrome, and visual impairment, began testing the program. By the end of the first month trial, the inaugural Dream League participants were showcasing their progress on the slopes, supported by volunteers including renowned artists and musicians. This marked the programā€™s promising beginning. Since then, over ten thousand individuals, both children, and adults, have participated in Dream League programs. Its methodology has been embraced by sports, rehabilitation, and educational institutions across numerous regions. Happy Monday people, "The World is Yours" Little bit of a different post on this sunny Monday morning, on both days this weekend on separate occassions we met two extremely kind ladies who went out of their way to recognise Brody's differences and include him in their tasks he wanted to be apart of, whilst both working, bearing in mind we have never met either of these Ladies before, they probably noticed me first, a very overwhelmed looking Mum as we were having a "Brody Day" both stopped what they were doing and gave us their time. So this weekend Brody has been a click and collect helper in Dunelm and worked a check out in Aldi on Sunday! It gave me a good sense of wholesomeness that there really are truly lovely people out there. My kids have Autism and they take the school bus. I know, I know, but before you judge, hear me out. This is not something I was comfortable with at first. I felt guilty. I felt selfish. I was worried something would happen to them. Butā€¦they love it. They get excited for it. And they may not be verbal yet, but I promise you they will absolutely protest and fight if we try to get them to do something they donā€™t like. And they wait for that bus to pull up and itā€™s the freakinā€™ cutest thing ever. Their first day, they both got on with no problem and looked so excited because it was something new. But they drive away and I bawled my eyes out. I felt sick watching my babies drive away with someone whom I was supposed to trust but didnā€™t know. I felt like crap, I felt selfish and I was uncomfortable. But I quickly realized that I canā€™t stress about every. single. thing. And they were HAPPY. Also, this gives me an extra hour a day and I am so grateful for that time. Thereā€™s often guilt and shame involved with taking advantage of the ā€œperksā€ we as special needs parents sometimes get. This is a tough life and I donā€™t think anyone should feel guilty for utilizing the resources available to us. So I let that cute little bus take them to and from school. Some days I run errands and clean and some days I get my nails done and go to the mall. I know this isnā€™t an option for everyone and if this just isnā€™t for you, thatā€™s totally ok too. Iā€™ve heard the comments and the ā€œI could neverā€ remarks and I get it. We have snails, guppies, the frog weā€™ve had for years, a fiddler crab, and two tiny turtles. šŸ˜Š #autism #parenting #theautismdad #autismparenting #adhd #autismacceptance #asd #autism #autismawareness #autismacceptance #asd #motherhood #momlife #parenthood #family #fatherhood #dadlife

Reflecting Reality: The Power of Autism Representation in Films šŸŽ¬ Films have the power to shape perceptions, foster empathy, and celebrate diversity. Accurate and positive portrayal of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in movies not only helps individuals on the spectrum see themselves reflected on screen but also educates and enlightens neurotypical audiences about the nuances of neurodiversity. By championing movies that respect and accurately portray ASD, we support a broader understanding and appreciation of neurodiversity, pushing society towards greater inclusivity and empathy. Letā€™s be the audience that demands and celebrates authentic representation. For more information, visit https://www.bluesprigautism.com/blog/autism-in-movies/. Wanted to share with you all some signs that moved us to suspect that our daughter might be on Autism Spectrum before her diagnosis. Here are some examples in no particular order: 1. Hand flapping 2. Not acknowledging her name 3. Doesn't look directly at you 4. Texture issues 5. Sensory issues These are only a few, there are more, but just wanted to give you an idea of what we noticed with our daughter before we pushed for her to get tested and so on. What are some signs you noticed with your little ones before their diagnosis? #autismpodcasters #autismawareness #autismparenting #autismparentsupport #autismsupport

#journeycontinuesā¤ļø Itā€™s been almost two months since I checked Netflix. It was actually a deliberate act especially during Ramadhan. So my husband suggested to see a film some days ago in order to relax. With the title ā€œThe Good Doctorā€, I thought it was one of those we had seen but he assured me that it was a different one. He saw the film from the angle of emotion and optimism but mine was from the angle of enthusiasm and paying attention to every scene to get the message it passes. I thought to share it with a special needs mom whoā€™s like a sister for her to ease off the stress sheā€™s been through lately, not knowing that sheā€™s seen it but stopped. I encouraged her to continue, she finds it very interesting too as she saw hope therein. My take away from the film is that thereā€™s a genius in every child irrespective of the ability/disability that we may tag or label them with. It is no doubt that the journey is overwhelming but finding a way to relax and ease off stress does make a difference. Find what soothes you best as a parent or caregiver to a child with additional needs. Remember that you cannot afford to let your pot be empty, it wonā€™t help you nor the child you are caring for. #easeoffstress #relax #youcannotpouroutofanemptycup #filmwatching #autism #disability #autismparenting #specialneedsfamily #inclusion

This is a major victory for my 24 year old autistic son, Gavin. As many of you know, Gavin was diagnosed with #CVID meaning his immune system is severely compromised. Twice a week, every week, Gavin has to undergo a procedure where he infuses medication through 2 tiny needles, directly into his belly. The infusion takes a couple of hours but it gives him the ability to fight off infection and remain healthy. Anyway, Gavin has been performing this procedure on his own for many years now and while it is painful, he never complains. Today weā€™re celebrating a huge victory because for the very first time ever, Gavin called and ordered his medical supplies all by himself. I was unable to do it because I was sick and without my voice. This is something that weā€™ve been working towards but heā€™s always been too nervous to do. This time however, I wrote him a script and all he needed to do was read over the phone. He did a fantastic job and his supplies showed up right on time. This is so huge because as heā€™s preparing to move out, managing this side of his life is so important. Iā€™m so proud of him and this is a huge step on his journey toward independence. šŸ˜Šā¤ļøšŸ‘šŸ™šŸ«¶šŸ„¹ #autism #parenting #theautismdad #autismparenting #adhd #autismacceptance #asd #autism #autismawareness #autismacceptance #asd #motherhood #momlife #parenthood #family #fatherhood #dadlife

Most hierarchy is socially constructed. Most hierarchy is not based in reality. We are sick from most hierarchy. There are so many other shapes, ways.
