South Asian mothers in film fall somewhere on the spectrum between obsessively checking that their kids have eaten, and forcing arranged marriages down their throats. Being of #SouthAsian heritage, we wanted to leave this behind. In Halwa, an immigrant empty-nester struggles with deeper issues—a lonely life, a deeply problematic marriage, and her own prohibited desires. She is conflicted on a personal level. Visually, our film is stark. Our character sits alone in wide spaces shot to emphasize her loneliness. She goes through two parallel experiences—living with a controlling husband in her physical reality, and re-connecting with a soulmate via Facebook. Our soundtrack reflects this contrast—the clicks and beeps of her passionate reminiscences echo in her empty home. He convinces his fellow-creatures to ask the Creator to give out new names. Wesakechak becomes so fixed on being the first in line at the naming ceremony that he tries to stay awake all night. Of course, he falls asleep towards dawn and is so late for the ceremony that he ends up with his old name. But the Creator gives him a new job - he will become the teacher of the First People. This way he will make his name important, not the other way around. Characters designed by artist Norval Morisseau. #DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT Greg Coyes I didn’t grow up with these stories as they existed primarily in the Cree oral tradition. My grandmother speaks Cree but didn’t pass that on to my mother as the language was devalued in the 1940s and 50’s when she was a child. I only became aware of the stories of Wesakechak as a young man through personal contacts in the Cree and Metis community, and through my own research of documented stories. When I began to hear and read the stories I recognized what a wonderful resource they were for both children and families! It was a real treat to work with a bilingual cast and an interpreter and produce these programs in both English and Cree. Every night before she falls asleep, the moon gives Harmony a fun task, like learning how to make a kite. In her dreams, Harmony completes the task with the help of friendly animals. Along the way, she learns about the ancient Haida language through song and play. The show is a combination of stop motion animation, live-action and hand puppets. Wanting a new toy, Harmony learns how to make a kite from Ýuuya the Raven. #DIRECTOR Neil Grahn Neil is Metis director from Edmonton, and he has directed dozens of series including Queen of the Oil Patch, Caution May Contain Nuts, Canadian Pickers and The Family Restuarant.
