'Artist Louise Beer and astrophysicist Roberto Trotta Thursday 14th March 7-8 pm (GMT) on Zoom They'll be discussing their deep interest in astronomy from their artistic and scientific perspectives, respectively, as well as how the night sky, the only truly global commons, can help in facing the ecological and climate crisis, even as itself is under threat from light pollution and a commercial space race. The event will allow time for an open discussion on stargazing in all its forms with everyone present, so you are welcome to participate by bringing your questions, ideas, perspectives and challenges from whatever area of work or interest you are immersed in! Roberto Trotta is professor of theoretical physics at the International School for Advanced Study in Trieste, Italy, where he is the head of Data Science, and a visiting professor at Imperial College London, where he was professor of astrostatistics. His research focuses on cosmology and machine learning. An award-winning author and science communicator, he is the recipient of the Annie Maunder Medal 2020 of the Royal Astronomical Society for his public engagement work. Day 200: Muskrat Creek Shelter to Dicks Creek Gap (Daily Miles: 11.8/Total AT Miles: 2123.9/Miles Remaining: 66.9) It was already 30 degrees when we woke up this morning, and above freezing by the time we left camp around 7am. Lots of fun things expected today. Crossing into Georgia, our last state, was the big highlight. We also planned to stop in and stay at Around the Bend with our friends, Gordon and Lisa. We were lucky enough to get to hike with them for a few days up in Vermont and have been eagerly looking forward to seeing them again. It was fun, beautiful, and easy miles out of North Carolina and into Georgia. We really do recognize some sights and locations from our 2021 trip, and that has brought back a flood of memories for both of us. At the hostel, we had a real blast getting to catch up with Gordon and Lisa. Their hostel is fantastic and definitely spoils NOBOs who get to stop here in the first week of their thru hikes. They managed to convince us to stay an extra night and slack pack from Unicoi back to the hostel tomorrow and we’re really excited to do that. We slept in a KINGS SIZED BED and, y’all, for a tall couple like us, that was a BIG luxury. Day 199: Carter Gap Shelter to Muskrat Creek Shelter (Daily Miles: 12.5/Total AT Miles: 2112.1/Miles Remaining: 78.7) Biiiiiiig chilly overnight. As far as I could tell, it got down to near 26, but we were safe and warm enough. I wouldn’t say I was cozy, but I didn’t feel chilled either. Chaz was totally fine in his usual base layers and quilt. Knowing we had a short day planned, we opted to stay in the shelter and in our sleeping bags until most of the morning had gone by. No reason to be out in this when we’ll get to camp early anyways! We ate a large breakfast spread and made some hot chocolate, and then finally convinced ourselves to pack up and venture out into the warm sun and cold air. It was 30 degrees when we left around 11am, hahaha. We hiked up the last mountain of North Carolina, Standing Indian. This is significant for us because, by including this trip and our section hike in 2021, we have now officially hiked every mountain of the AT. A few miles later, we crossed into Deep Gap, where we ended our section hike, so today we officially have hiked the entire Appalachian Trail. It was pretty special to be back in some familiar territory and “retrace” our footsteps, so to speak. The day was cooooooold just like yesterday, but the sun was warm and our spirits were high. 2100! Less than 100 miles to go!! The final milestone to cross. Building this was a bit surreal, and I feel so many emotions. We opted to wait to build this until the sun was properly up (because yaaaaaalll it’s cold) and we had a perfect lunch spot on Standing Indian mountain. What a place to celebrate a momentous achievement. I am so, so, so proud of our feet for carrying us this far. Day 198: Winding Stair Gap to Carter Gap Shelter (Daily Miles: 15.9/Total AT Miles: 2099.6/Miles Remaining: 91.2) After a truly lovely stay at Chica and Sunsets hostel, we got a shuttle back to the trail and braced ourselves for tough conditions: actual air temperature 27 degrees. Woooooo. That’s cold. But, surprisingly, the cold wasn’t too tough to manage. We have really good clothing layers, it wasn’t too breezy, and it was so sunny. Hiking on the shadowy side of the ridge was a little less fun, but we still had a great day of hiking. We stayed warm, mood and morale was high, and it was hands down the most fun I can remember ever having while outside in 27 degree temps. All those winters in northern Indiana rubbed off on me somehow I guess!! The air temperature got up to 38 degrees or so by the late afternoon which was pretty pleasant all things considered. We summitted Albert Mountain today which is a big landmark. It marks one of the first steep climbs for NOBOs and is about 100 miles from the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. It felt GOOOOOOOOOOD to hit this landmark. I was over the moon with joy, even with the cold air! Coming down off Albert, though, was a different experience altogether. The steep ascent NOBOs dread is our steep descent, since we’re heading south. Between the terrain and the fall leaf drop, I couldn’t believe how slow it took us to hike a half mile. The leaves were so thick covering the trail at one point I was in a leaf pile up to my knees! I found myself wishing we packed out a broom just so I could see the steep rock steps I was trying to hike down. It was downright laughable and we did laugh about it a lot. We made it to the shelter for the evening and got all bundled up. There’s a few other people here and we’re all bracing ourselves for the overnight chill. Day 197: Wayah Bald Shelter to Winding Stair Gap (Daily Miles: 11.0/Total AT Miles: 2083.7/Miles Remaining: 107.1) We woke up early and were the first ones out of camp. We had a good number of miles we wanted to hike and we wanted to have time to visit Wayah Bald and Siler Bald before meeting our shuttle into town. Wayah Bald was fantastic. We officially have 9 days (SINGLE DIGIT DAYS) left on this trip and Wayah was like “YOU DESERVE A BREATHTAKING SUNRISE.” See? That’s what I appreciates about you, North Carolina. ♥️ The moody weather from yesterday came out in earnest as we got to Siler Bald, unfortunately completely obstructing the view. Alas. We’ll just have to come back and do this section again some day. We arrived perfectly on time to meet Sunsets, one of the owners of Chica and Sunsets Hostel in Franklin, NC. Franklin is a big deal for us because we’ve been here before! In 2021, when Chaz and I section hiked Georgia, we finished and decided to make the trip to Franklin to check it out. I found myself filled with such joy to recognize certain areas and locations. I was hit with nostalgia and also excitement. Chica and Sunsets gave us a really perfect hostel experience. It’s a small place, only 4 beds, and we are the only ones here tonight, so it was basically like having an Airbnb experience. They gave us everything we needed to rest, rejuvenate, and prepare. Because we’ve got a couple of hard days ahead of us. This area is getting a cold snap starting tonight and continuing for 3 days: it’s gonna be actual temperate in the 20s overnight, with highs in the mid 40s during the day. Luckily, it should be sunny (no rain expected), but thems some cooooooooold weather. We can do cold and sunny, right? That’s my hope. Day 196: Rufus Morgan Shelter to Wayah Bald Shelter (Daily Miles: 15.5/Total AT Miles: 2072.7/Miles Remaining: 118.1) Good news: the spiders didn’t bother us at all. In fact, none of them even moved overnight??? Maybe it was too cold for them so they just stayed put, but I’d love some spider scientist to explain to me how spiders can just not move for 10 hours because I’m baffled. Today was a beautiful day. At least it started out that way. We had to do what is basically our last long, sustained major ascent of the AT coming up and out of the NOC and to Wesser Bald. It. Was. Gorgeous. The sun was out, it was breezy, there were moody clouds all about. Really fun and idyllic. Some really incredible views. Today sealed it: North Carolina is my favorite state on the whole AT. Hands down. We have discovered a new problem, though: after the autumn leaf change comes the autumn leaf drop. And y’all. All those beautiful leaves are now just EVERYWHERE on this trail. They’re so thick in places we cannot see the trail at all and are just kind of going the general direction we think the trail is. This makes for frustrating hiking: the leaves completely obstruct any rocks, roots, holes, steep foot holds that may be lurking beneath them. I am tripping constantly! I truly didn’t expect this when we were planning to be hiking in the fall. Now I know. A chilly rainstorm blew in during the late afternoon that made for really beautiful and moody views on Wesser Bald fire tower. There was a small part of me that wondered if we could be lucky enough…dare I think it…could this be our last rain day of the AT???? Day 195: Brown Fork Gap Shelter to Rufus Morgan Shelter (Daily Miles: 17.0/Total AT Miles: 2057.2/Miles Remaining: 133.6) Tough day today, but beautiful. We got to hike some pretty iconic spots on the AT: Cheoah Bald and Stecoah Gap, and then down the infamous gap into Nantahala Outdoor Center in Nantahala Gorge. It was a LOT of ascent and descent. Actually, it was our single biggest elevation day of this whole trip (including NH and ME!) and we did it by accident. It wasn’t planned nor were we expecting it! Over the 17 miles, we climbed nearly 5300 feet and descended over 6900 feet elevation. That’s a tough day. It makes me think about all the NOBOs who do this in their first 150 miles and reaffirmed our decision to be flip floppers, lol. The NOC was really nice and picturesque. We had a resupply package waiting for us courtesy of Chaz’s amazing sister, Marlow. She had even included a bunch of little goodies from our nieces and nephews, sweet handwritten notes and hand drawn pictures that really made us smile. Thank you so much, Griggs family! We’re gonna carry them with us these last 133 miles!! When we arrived at the shelter and a pretty late hour, we got set up and were preparing for bed. A lot of people have asked us if the bugs or critters in the shelters ever bother us. Across the board, almost never. Sometimes there’s mosquitos and that’s tough but we’ve been lucky to have not been kept awake by any critters. Until tonight. Tonight I saw the largest spiders I’ve ever personally seen in the wild inside this shelter. And there were SO MANY. How can a tiny shelter house so many giant spiders?! It gave me the heebie jeebi big time. Day 194: Fontana Dam to Brown Fork Gap Shelter (Daily Miles: 13.4/Total AT Miles: 2040.2/Miles Remaining: 150.6) We started today quite slow. Nancy gave us a ride back to Fontana Dam and we were too excited and interested in it to start hiking away too soon. Instead we read all the informational plaques around it and chatted with some locals about the history. It was nearly 10am before we left, and we had a BIG day today! Hiking up and out of Fontana Dam (NOBO or SOBO) is a long tough climb. We passed by thru hiker of a different sort today: someone starting the Benton MacKaye Trail SOBO. He thru-hiked the AT in a previous year as a SOBO and finished around Thanksgiving and was just a day out from starting the BMT and hoping for the same finish. It was really fun to chat with a former thru hiker and also talk to someone about to begin their own new thru hiking experience. Which reminds me. Sometimes I worry when people can tell I’m a thru hiker from far away. Like. Surely I can’t smell that bad. And I know they can’t see my AT hang tag on the back of my pack, soooo…..how do they know?? Day 193: Russell Field Shelter to Fontana Dam (Daily Miles: 14.5/Total AT Miles: 2026.8/Miles Remaining: 164.0) We got up early today and hiked some truly incredible miles to finish out our last day of GSMNP. It was a beautiful and peaceful sunrise. The days are certainly getting quite short and we’re doing our best to maximize the daylight as much as possible. We had been recommended by numerous locals and day hikers that we should absolutely not skip Shuckstack and it’s fire tower, which are just off the AT on a blue blaze. Absolutely wonderful advice. Shuckstack offered us the best views yet in the park (not that it was a competition!!) and the fall leaf change was on full display from the tower. We ate a delicious lunch at this spot, savoring every bit of the view and accomplishment we could. Then, we hiked down and out of the Smokies and to Fontana Dam, very iconic spot for thru hikers and local tourists alike. The dam is the longest on the east coast and one of the longest water crossings on the AT. Glad it’s here! We got a ride to the nearby The Hike Inn by the amazing owner, Nancy, who really understands the world of thru hikers. We mentioned off-hand that we had a great town dinner in Gatlinburg and her first guess was “Five Guys?” (Which was correct 😂) We had a really lovely stay at the Hike Inn which totally helped us celebrate completing the Smokies and rejuvenated us for what’s to come. Day 192: Double Spring Shelter to Russell Field Shelter (Daily Miles: 16.4/Total AT Miles: 2012.3/Miles Remaining: 178.5) Despite a week of beautiful perfect weather throughout the Smokies, today we woke up and it was overcast and drizzling. Nothing could bring our spirits down, though; we’re old hats at this cold and rainy thing by now! We were the first up and out of the shelter this morning and it made for quiet, slow, but very productive miles hiked. There were a few times today where we thought “huh, does this feel uncharacteristically steep to you?” Which made us chuckle at the same time. A lot of the trail through the Smokies doubles as horse trails. I’m guessing that Thunderhead Mountain is not a horse trail because it was certainly at a steeper grade than the previous 50-odd miles of trail we’ve been doing! We also have had to listen to a handful of annoying section hikers or fellow thru hikers complain about the huge volume of people (namely day hikers and weekenders) in the Smokies. It hasn’t bothered us at all. We have had no problems finding room in the shelters or on the bear cables, yet the others love to complain to us about each other, haha. I find myself thinking “they’re doing the same thing you’re doing: enjoying the Smokies during peak fall leaf change.” As if to reward our positive outlook, our first and last nights in the Smokies gave us an entire shelter to ourselves. We built a big fire in the fireplace and celebrated our last night in the Smokies. Day 191: Newfound Gap to Double Spring Shelter (Daily Miles: 10.5/Total AT Miles: 1995.9/Miles Remaining: 194.9) I think we slept the best we’ve slept in a hotel or hostel overnight. The beds were soft and large and the room was the perfect climate controlled temperature. It’s truly the little things you miss out on trail, like waking up in a 68 degree room. We were so comfortable we just slept in as long as we wanted, only begrudgingly getting out of bed when we realized the included breakfast might end before we got there! We didn’t leave our hotel until nearly 11am. It was a bit harder than usual to get a ride back to trail, but we managed it and were hiking again sometime near 1pm. It was a fun and exciting handful of miles to Clingmans Dome. Clingmans is the highest elevation point on the whole AT, and it was so much warmer and nicer weather than when we did a similar (but shorter) hike to Mt. Washington in New Hampshire back in July. Clingmans was swarmed with day hikers and parking lot people, but that didn’t dampen our spirits or make reaching this point any less special for us. We chatted about our trip with a bunch of curious tourists and it really helped bring our whole trip into perspective. We are two weeks away from finishing. We’ve spent years planning and dreaming and now months hiking, hoping beyond hope that we would have what it takes to be here, standing in this spot, excitedly telling the people fresh from their cars, “yeah, I basically walked all the way here from Maine.” (Yeah, I know, we literally walked here from Shenandoah, but we BASICALLY walked here from Maine! Day 190: Ice Spring Shelter to Newfound Gap (Daily Miles: 3.1/Total AT Miles: 1985.4/Miles Remaining: 205.4) We got up nice and early because today is a town day! And not just any town, Gatlinburg! We got a pretty quick ride from some locals at Newfound Gap who took us into Gatlinburg. We had a really fun day experience the total opposite of trail life: so many people, shops, cars, sights, and sounds. It was an assault on our thru hiker senses, but we still had a wonderful time. The highlight of the day is something we’ve been excited about for months: we took a side trip to Dolly Parton’s Stampede, a dinner theater like show akin to Medieval Times. It was totally over the top and ridiculous, but we had a lot of fun pretending to be normal tourists in Pigeon Forge. The horses and horsemanship were really spectacular and made the whole endeavor absolutely worth it. That completes all of our non-AT points of interest, things just off trail that we have been looking forward to.
