Day 125-127 on the PCT Miles 2422.6ish to 2440.5 to 2466.8 We continued through the shortcut on our way back to trail, but it ended up being a relatively steep uphill climb back. We stopped for lunch when we got back onto the trail and decided to try to get to the top of the next hill for camp. It ended up being a horribly hot day, and at one point, I was barely walking a mile before stopping to rest in the shade. Fortunately, Madie found me and rested with me. She encouraged me to get to each of our rest stops, and then on the final hill Kenneth came back for me, and took over the encouragement work, as I was now having pain in my knee. Somehow, I made it to camp, so the next day had a nice long downhill to look forward to. There was a river crossing just a few miles in that I probably could've rock hopped, but I just blasted straight through the water. We decided to take Deception Creek to get to Skykomish sooner, and just before the trail, I met a TA who gave me cheese and edibles, I gave my friends the cheese. We took the trail, and a few miles in, I was stung twice by a wasp, who then also got Kenneth. It hurt so much! But we needed to push on to get to town, so I walked and complained. My headphones had broken again, but Kenneth gave me an airpod to listen to his podcast, which was actually really interesting. There were a few log crossings, and for the first time, I managed to walk upright all the way across a log. It may have been a ridiculously wide one, but I was proud of myself. We made it to a road and then hitched to Skykomish. My recommendation for future PCTers is not to zero here. There was basically nothing there, only one bar/restaurant and a small bakery/shop. Looking back at a 2014 PCT thru-hike a decade later | Day 8 | May 1 | Sky Ranch Sanctuary to Highway 74/Idyllwild | Miles 127.3-151.9 | The trail north to Idyllwild was closed due to a forest fire that had burned the previous year. I walked to the side of the highway and stood with my thumb out. A coyote slinked through the meadow behind me as dusk approached. It was my first hitchhike of the trail and the first time I had ever hitched in the United States. I was picked up by a musician headed to a gig in Idyllwild. An amp sat between us on the bench seat of his pickup truck. With the addition of myself and my pack, I was unable to completely shut the passenger-side door. Nonetheless, we were on our way and I clutched it tightly, holding it closed as we careened around sharp turn after sharp turn, racing towards the gig he was late for. . I exited the vehicle at an intersection in the center of town, shouldered my pack and headed towards the state park campground, thankful to be in that mountain town. As I lay cowboy camping under a clear night sky I was filled with a sense of joy and comfort looking up at the silhouette of pine trees against a backdrop of stars. The thin sliver of a crescent moon floated above. DAY 3 - LANGDALE TO KESWICK. Today was a scorcher. The night before was lovely, no wind or rain, incredible views over at the Langdale Pikes same for the morning. I started about 3 miles off from where day 3 was suppose to start so probably done a max of about 19miles today with an elevation of 1,725ft of ascent over stakes pass under the constant barrage of the sun. My head is lobster red now. I genuinely don't know what was worse getting soaked to the skin Monday carrying that pack or today's relentless heat with that pack. I called it a day with about 3-4 miles to go from Keswick along the shores of Derwent Water and got the antique keswick launch boat to keswick, I was fried mentally and physically and could not carry on. Day 2: Woke up early to avoid some of the heat. It felt so nice not having the suffocating heat while hiking for the first couple of hours. I hiked around the same hikers I had met the day before. We all took a lot of breaks when we could find shade to help with the heat. Lot’s of snakes! A bit too many especially the rattlesnakes. And lot’s of cacti! The vegetation is so interesting especially these trees with very soft red bark. Day 19(mile 109.5-209.5) Our longest day yet! 19 miles with 6800ft of descent! It was a beautiful day and the downhill was fairly gentle on the ol’ knees. We had thought about stopping at the faucet for the night but it wasn’t a very nice spot and completely in the open so we carried on. Had a little trail magic left on a bench. It was a nice treat on a hot long day. We also saw 3 rattlesnakes today. THE ARIZONA TRAIL 🏜️ 49 days, 3/13 - 4/30 In my thousands of miles hiked, these 800 rocked me. I feel like every step I took on previous trails prepared me in some way for this one. I knew it would be hard, but was honestly surprised by how second nature everything felt. Feet completely destroyed by blisters? Oh well. Hail storm pelting my face? Almost comical. Weathering those challenges with some of the greatest people I have ever known made this something sacred. It’s not often you make fast friends in adulthood. We love to joke that we’re all just masochists that thrive on discomfort, but damn do we have fun doing it together. Thru hiking can and will break your spirit if you don’t know your “why.” But if you lean into the discomfort, give it every ounce of your fortitude and trust in your power, I promise you that you will be a better human on the other end. I’m always asked “what is the hardest part?” You can’t get lost in the big picture. Sometimes you just have to take it one hour at a time. The trail will strip you down and show you exactly what you’re made of… there’s no where to hide from it. You will be cold, wet, in pain, lonely, exhausted, defeated. You will kick a rock into your own shin and scream explicits as you go downhill. You can’t disentangle the suffer fest from the bliss, that’s just how it goes; they must coincide. You either buckle down on your mental fortitude or you crumble. And what a gift it is discover how gritty you truly are. I don’t know if I’m “changed” per se, but am I more alive because of the AZT? A resounding YES. This trail gave me everything I needed in a time of life when my spirit has felt stifled. Tapping into my wildness, running feral and pushing harder than ever before has been EVERYTHING to me. It’s been so long since I’ve had this much happiness bursting out of my skin. Frolicking in the backcountry has filled me with a type of joy I didn’t know existed. I am stronger than I’ve ever been before. And so, so grateful. I will revisit these moments in my mind for the rest of my life. #azt #arizonatrail #thruhike #womenwhothruhike #aztassociation

Book Club Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ This month was a little different. We were inspired by Earth Day to read a memoir of a female hiker doing the John Muir Trail. This book was very inspiring and uplifting but I don’t think it was quite right for me. It personally didn’t inspire me to thru-hike for a month. I felt like the pacing was very slow and it was a struggle at times to keep moving through it for me. I read this for book club and I’m not sure if I would’ve finished it otherwise. I’m beyond happy for “The Three Women” and so proud they accomplished a huge feat. I will say the descriptions were brilliantly vivid though and it made me feel like I was a part of the hike. Το Χιονοβούνι Ποτέ δεν θα μπορούσα να φανταστώ πως πάνω από τις ακτές τις Ανατολικής Λακωνίας υπάρχει ένα βουνό με τόσο μεγάλα δάση ελάτης και μαύρης πεύκης και από τα ψηλά σημεία του οποίου μπορεί κανείς να δει όχι μόνο τα διπλανά μικρά νησιά του Αργοσαρωνικού όπως η Ύδρα και οι Σπέτσες αλλά και αντίστοιχα των Κυκλάδων όπως για παράδειγμα η Μήλος, η Σίφνος, η Σέριφος και άλλα. Ιδιαίτερη εντύπωση μου έκανε το πλήθος των εγκαταλελειμμένων μαντριών και καλυβιών που συναντά κανείς σε κάθε γωνία σχεδόν του ορεινού αυτού όγκου όπως επίσης και τα πολλά διαμορφωμένα χωράφια με κτιστές πεζούλες σε κάθε μικρό του πλάτωμα. The Catalina range has varied elevation with a generally high average elevation. The range’s lowest elevations are around 2,640ft and maxing out at 9,171ft on the summit of Mount Lemmon. This range has quite dramatic relief with over 6,000ft of elevation gain from base to high point. The Santa Catalinas will take me from low desert scrublands to the very familiar mixed conifer forests I’ve known all my life. As far as the Madrean Sky Islands go, the Catalinas are a magical range and I’m very curious about exploring them! Section 2 of my SIT (Sky Island Traverse) is the first section where I’ll be able to utilize the Arizona Trail. In this section I’ll be backpacking roughly 65 miles with over 16,500ft of elevation gain. AZT SOBO: A small gathering After leaving Superior (and the ever loving MJ), Narrator and I marched towards Kearney for the famous Old Time Pizza. The same night, we slept in a wash and felt some rain. Little did we know that was the precursor of weather for the next day. The following afternoon saw us chased by a relentless thunderstorm that lasted forever. Narrator put on the afterburner (5 mi/hr?) and I barely survived because I had shipped my poncho to Colossal Cave. When we finally reached camp, we were fully soaked. Just as we finished setting up camp for the night, a van pulled up, and it was Sirena, who had arrived to support Snorkel (who I met in Superior) for the next few days. Sirena is an Arizona Trail expert, writer and photographer, and Snorkel is… Well you should look her up! Sirena checked in with us to make sure we were okay before we bid good night. The next morning, she invited us for hot tea and oranges. We took some time to dry out our wet items in the morning and then set off at our own pace. For the next few days, Narrator, Snorkel and I hiked around each other, enjoyed more trail magic provided by Sirena, until we finally reached Mount Lemmon. Some of you know I wasnt really prepared for a thru hike in Iceland as it supposed to be my cycling adventure up there😅 On this stage I had to walk between two glaciers in a ordinary trainers what wasnt really smart or easy🙈 but I had to deal with situation as I could 🤷♀️ In some places Ive been quite exposed what was challenging for me as Im still pretty scared of heights but I needed to push myself to walk forward.. had to pull up my sweaty bum by chains in a quite windy weather conditions🙈...Yep I had a thoughts in my mind kind of Jezzz Im f×cked alone so high if I will fall down no one will even notice 🤣 but yeah happily nothing happened😉and on the end all the effort was worth it as all the views was absolutely breathtaking! PCT2022 1500-Ashland-1800mi 前天便聽聞前方發生森林大火，由於風勢不小，燃燒區域擴散地極快，第二天我們整天都在聞煙味，越往北走，感受越鮮明。對野火不熟悉的我本來還沒有什麼擔憂，不過聽夥伴說之前森林野火的煙霧飄進他們所居的城市，就連在家中都得戴著PM2.5口罩，每一口呼吸都吸不滿。 再隔一天，我們輾轉搭了兩次便車到野火北方的小鎮避難，在鎮上臨時設置的庇護所待了將近一天半。由於我們並沒有受傷、也沒有真的需要被照顧，總覺得有點浪費資源，我們知道還有很多鄰近野火的小鎮居民正在撤離自己的家、也還有很多還在野火南方的徒步者需要找方法過來這裡，於是我們稍作整理便決定回到步道。 回到步道的第一晚立刻迎來整夜的雷雨，隔著薄薄的帳篷，每一下閃電都猶如巨型閃光燈打在臉上、每一次落雷都能感受到大地在顫動。除了擔心自己被雷打到之外(?) 也默默祈禱不會擊中樹，因為前幾天這場一發不可收拾的森林大火就是因雷擊而引發的。 . Two days ago, we heard about a forest wildfire ahead. Due to strong winds, the burning area spread rapidly. The next day, we could smell smoke all day long, and the further north we went, the stronger the smell became. Initially, I wasn‘t worried about wildfires, but hearing from my friends that smoke from previous forest fires had reached their city, requiring them to wear PM2.5 masks even indoors, made me realize the severity of the situation. The following day, we hitchhiked twice to a northern town away from the wildfire for refuge. We stayed in a makeshift shelter there for almost a day and a half. Although we were unharmed and didn’t need immediate care, we felt like we were taking up resources unnecessarily. We knew many nearby town residents were evacuating, and there were still many hikers south of the wildfire needing a way to reach safety here. So, after a brief organization, we decided to return to the trail. The first night back on the trail brought a night-long thunderstorm. Through our thin tent, each lightning strike felt like a giant flash of light on our faces, and every thunderclap made the ground tremble. Every four or five days, we arrive some place where we can do laundry. These places (usually a hostel) often provide “loaner clothes” which means we can borrow a shirt, pants etc while all of our hiking clothing goes into the washing machine. Recently jasonhardrath and his partner nathan358 established an “Infinity Loop” on Pico De Orizabo (18,491ft). And infinity loop is where a person climbs to the summit of a mountain on one side, runs around to the other side, climbs to the top again, and then runs back around to the finish where they started - a truly incredible feat.
