Paava Kadhaigal (2020) Indian Tamil language anthology drama film consists of four short films directed by Sudha Kongara, Vignesh Shivan, Gautham Vasudev Menon and Vetrimaaran. A photographer Ram (Vijay Sethupathi), who gets a chance to visit his hometown and his school, gets his heart filled with memories. Ram reunites with his class of ’96 through where he meets his childhood love, Janaki (Trisha Krishnan). After untimely separation for 20 years, they get to spend some time together before they part their ways again. The director C. Prem Kumar has knitted the scenes perfectly with narrative going from present to past and back along the flashback sequences. Govind Vasantha has poured his heart out in creating music for ’96 which is evident in the violin melody at the start of the film. The cinematography is at its best when it tries to capture moments through a photographer’s eye. On top of all that, there is the excellent performance by Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha Krishnan which has given life to characters Ram and Janaki. '96 is a story of time defying, unconditional love without ever losing its touch with reality. It is a story which is heart warming yet overwhelms you with purest of emotions. Dear Ram and Janu, While most of the people let go of their past and make peace as the time flies, you showed us there are people who still hold on even when there's no hope. You loved each other from the bottom of your hearts during highschool but thought that the other one didn't love you and left you. When you met again after 22 years for the school reunion, the initial reactions by seeing eachother after so long showed us that you did not recover from your past. After knowing that Ram didn't get married, Janu accused herself for moving on and kept on asking him for the reason and he did answer her question when she asked him, "Have you gone too far?" He replied by saying ,"I am exactly where I left you". Janu said to Ram,"I couldn't understand why you left without informing me that day and why you didn't come back for me ? I didn't know whom to ask neither did I forget you. On my wedding day, I even felt your presence and eagerly waited with the belief that you'd appear out of nowhere and scream, "Give me back ,my JANU". But I got married anyway. By listening to this , Ram became numb and seeing Ram being quiet, Janu told him that she wanted to tell him this whenever she got the chance to meet him but she didn't want to hold him at fault. After knowing the truth that Ram came to her college to see her but she misunderstood him as someone else as the girl didn't tell his name, Janu cried her heart out apologizing to Ram that she didn't see him that day and didn't know that he was there that day. She says"If we are not destined to be together then why should we even meet again?" Both of them regret for coming into conclusion without knowing the truth.
