Dev Patel begins his directorial debut by placing himself as the leading actor in this one man army revenge story in the mould of film characters such as ‘John Wick’. However, despite taking a different cultural approach and a more harrowing backstory, ‘Monkey Man’ fails to match the levels of similar lone wolf predecessors. Unlike ‘John Wick’ and similar films where the context of the plot is laid to us before the action kicks in, here the story is allowed to run without any knowledge of why Kid (Dev Patel) is seeking such revenge. Eventually throughout the story it becomes uncovered as to why through snippets of flashbacks that reveal more and more that ultimately justify the pain you can see administered through the well performed Patel’s eyes. Nonetheless, I found this was detrimental to the movie, it’s always good to see something different but here I found it hard to root for the protagonist in the first act. The context of the revenge is so powerful that if revealed earlier would have had me zoned in way more than I was. Also the film had a strange tone at times as naturally it has dark and gritty moments but also thanks in part to Alphonso (Pitabhash Tripathi) there was plenty of comedy, while the comedy was quite entertaining it created a confusing overall tone at times. On the flip side of this Dev Patel offers a committed performance while also directing a film that offers something slightly different to the genre it lies in, strong fight sequences and good editing. Overall, this film was not for me but it's not a bad film by any imagination. Despite a well rounded performance from Patel in acting and directing I was unable to invest in the story as much as the alternative army of one movie characters partly due to the slow release of the contextual background here. The best part of this movie is, by far, Dev Patel. Not just in front of the camera (of which he is absolutely incredible), but likewise from behind in his directorial debut. Just focusing on the directing alone, this is remarkably well made. From a seasoned director l'd be impressed, but from a novice l'm astonished. Beyond the fact that the action sequences are amazing to behold (besides a few unfortunate instances of shaky cam), the fundamental cinematic craftsmanship is quite breathtaking. Everything down to the gorgeous cinematography, the visceral sound design, the unnerving atmospheric intensity, and the eccentric music choices all come together to form a product that truly stands out unique in the action genre. I've seen some comparisons to John Wick, and while I understand the inclination, I think that's a very simple and hollow way to categorize this film. Although it does follow a lone mercenary on a revenge-driven conquest in a neon underground world, this is far more meditative and spiritual than John Wick ever was. I almost hesitated to classify this as an "action" film, because the drama of the spiritual journey is far more prevalent than the fighting scenes. However, that being said, I think the story and pacing could've used some improvement. While I did appreciate the slow burn nature of the drama and the mystical tone of the ambience, likewise think it sometimes went a little bit too far in those moments, thus resulting in a pace that surpassed its runtime and dragged out the narrative. Overall, this is a really impressive demonstration of what Dev Patel is capable of from behind the camera. Though the story occasionally ran a bit too slow for my preference, the directorial talent is undeniably extraordinary. I think with future stronger scripts, Patel could easily become one of the most unique and distinctive voices working within the action genre.

🎥Reseña de Película 🎥 🚘Thelma y Louise: Un final inesperado (Thelma & Louise, 1991) Dir. Ridley Scott y Guión. Callie Khouri 🎥Thelma y Louise son dos amigas que vienen preparando una escapada de fin de semana hace tiempo, a pesar de los horarios de Louise y el controlador marido de Thelma. Sin embargo, las cosas toman un giro oscuro cuando Thelma sufre un intento de violación y Louise mata a su atacante. A partir de ahí, las cosas van en escalada. 🎥Protagonizada por dos íconos, y musicalizada por el gran Zimmer, la película se volvió un éxito enseguida. La valió a su guionista el Óscar y el Globo de Oro al mejor guión original, y no sin motivos. Ya que abarca muchísimas temáticas que se mantienen relevantes y siguen siendo motivo de debate. Es interesante que, incluso en su estreno, las opiniones se dividieron entre quiénes la consideraron misándrica y quiénes la consideraron misógina. Y creo que lograr posturas tan opuestas, habla de lo atractiva que es la cinta en sí. 🎥Por otro lado, a niveles visuales es increíble. Porque contiene todos los elementos de una "película de viaje", con los paisajes monumentales y la sensación de calor pero también de libertad. Que es un poco en la nota que termina, para mí, la cinta y que me hace llorar siempre. Sinceramente, a niveles generales la considero una buena película feminista y siempre sentí que su mensaje final, aunque triste, es poderoso y de gran capacidad inspiracional dadas las circunstancias. 🎥Por último, fue referenciada en infinidad de ocasiones e inspiró también a muchos otros artistas. Los casos más reconocidos fueron Tori Amos con su canción "Me and a Gun" (que también hablaba de su propia experiencia) y el video de "Telephone" de Lady Gaga y Beyoncé. And this we see the finale of Shogun. And may I just say I have thoroughly enjoyed every episode. 🤩 No, there will not be a second season, on count of the book being fully adapted. And spoiler only for those who know nothing of Japanese history: the characters pull a shogun. They…. they do the thing that’s the series’ title. Thoughts on the story, and what I really love about it is, ‘cause here’s the thing:……… No one in this show is really the “good guy”. Sure there’s the protagonists and the antagonists, but it just seems to me that we’re rooting for the protagonists just because the they’re the focus, right? The story isn’t about fighting for justice or freedom or stopping the war against the machines, it’s about a warlord doing warlord stuff against other warlords to be the biggest warlord. Blackthorne, the Englishman, he’s not there to set things right or stuff, he’s just tangled up in this web at the most pivotal moment, he’s no particular good guy in the slightest either. I mean, SURE, the Edo Era ended years of civil war and brought peace and prosperity to Japan, but it was peace with an iron fist. And Japanese cinema made loads of films criticizing the cruelty of that era. I watched Harakiri not too long ago that was ALL ABOUT painting the Shogunate as corrupt and shallow. And don’t forget Martin Scorsese’s Silence. But this mini series here doesn’t even get to that part of history, leaving a haunting impression that it’s a happy ending….. AND THAT’S WHY THE SHOW IS FANTASTIC. No propaganda, just a TALE of the inevitability of fate. (And there’s some neat moments tying into that theme). I sure hope this makes Cosmo Jarvis a more popular actor because he makes a FANTASTIC lead actor. As well as for Anna Sawai as Mariko-sama who NAILS the chemistry, the hidden shame and pain, as well as the stiff upper lip relationship with Jarvis’ character. And Hiroyuki Sanada as the patient and plotting Toragana is masterfully in charge of every scene. And Tadanobu Asano adds this cocky, fumbling, failing upwards, but knows enough to lead type of charisma to his character that’s very well thought out as a performance. Loved this show. Loved it loved it loved it.
El Alien Day es el momento perfecto para hablar de la nueva entrega, Alien Romulus. Primero que todo, debo reconocer que soy muy fan de la saga y disfruto de todas las películas, sobre todo de su filosofía, universo y su violencia 🔥 Dicho esto, debo defender las últimas entregas. Tanto "Prometheus" como "Covenant" las considero muy buenas partes de este universo, donde se profundiza la conversación hacia el gran creador de todo y se muestra más violencia deliciosa y exquisita. Para esta nueva entrega llega Fede Álvarez para orquestar, y le tengo más fe que nunca. ✨️En primer lugar, me encanta el cine de Fede, es muy angustiante, divertido, con mucha sangre y historias que no te sueltan; incluso su remake de "Evil Dead" es una joya. ✨️En segundo lugar, busco reencontrar la saga con los efectos prácticos y el CGI solo para los detalles 🔥🔥🔥 ✨️Y por último, la película se sitúa entre "Alien" y "Aliens". Fede declaró que, en un principio, quería contar una historia aparte de la saga, hasta que dieron con un grupo que ya pertenece al universo. Esto es muy interesante para referenciar elementos de la saga, desde guiños hasta tecnología. #QuickMovieReview BOY KILLS WORLD (dir. Moritz Mohr) Got to say I rather enjoyed #BoyKillsWorld. For better or worse, it’s absolutely bonkers and a lot - possibly too much - to take in at times but vibe with it and you’ll have a good time. The hyperactive energy and quirky humour swing wildly from endearing to annoying throughout but when it’s at full speed it slaps pretty hard, with impressively executed fight sequences, cool world building, and Bill Skarsgård fully committing to the bit. I will never look at a cheese grater the same way again though. Score: ★ ★ ★ ½

For those that are unfamiliar, Late Night With The Devil follows the story of a late-night talk show host who, in an attempt to boost dwindling ratings, brings on an allegedly possessed girl for his Halloween special in 1977. One aspect that I particularly enjoyed about this film is how it all seemingly takes place in real time. This is a rather tricky technique to pull off, because you’re dictated to exist in real-time and forced to maintain a certain level of intrigue and tension in each passing second without the luxury of being able to cut to the next hour or day. In this case, you’re trapped with Jack Delroy from beginning to end as he navigates his 90 minute episode, both live on TV and between commercial breaks. Some films employ this method as a gimmick, but in this case, it actually elevates the narrative to a level it wouldn’t have otherwise achieved. As events begin to escalate, you start to experience the same level of anxiety and confusion that Jack himself faces as he’s obligated to keep the show going, no matter the cost. It’s great editing, excellent writing, and overall a very intelligent way to foster suspense. However, this all would’ve amounted to nothing if it weren’t for the incredible performance from David Dastmalchian, who once again proves himself to be one of the most underrated and under-appreciated actors working today. One thing David is especially remarkable at in particular is portraying a man haunted by thoughts of inadequacy and severe trepidation, which is precisely what this movie required in order to make the story work. The range of emotions necessary to embody a man that’s conflicted by a desire to be seen in contrast of being exposed to the horrors of the supernatural is a very thin line to walk, and yet David pulls it off with beautiful strides. However, I do think the movie begins to lose itself in the third act. Contrasting its previous slow-burn approach, it instead turns a bit bombastic in its presentation, implementing some pretty egregious CGI that heavily removes the audience from the viewing experiencing. But overall, I thought this was a very unique and effective horror film, and absolutely a standout in 2024.

That a wrap on the 2024 Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival, at least the in-person experience. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Quentin Tarantino was reportedly planning on bringing back iconic characters from his past movies for his (now cancelled) final film, “The Movie Critic”. Per the report, Tarantino was playing with two different ideas to bring back his past characters. One idea would have seen the director’s films existing in the same reality as the new movie, letting him resurrect his famous characters for “film within a film” moments.
