Did you know exhibiting at a wedding show or convention is as stressful as planning a wedding? The @khushweddingshow last month was my first after about a decade and I honestly forgot exactly how much effort and work goes into these events. From stand design including sourcing the right accessories, promo material, getting client contacts, and being a makeup artistโฆ of course getting your models, or in my case my real brides, ready from makeup, hair to the overall outfit and jewellery.. Itโs hours and hours of work. And after a whole day of standing on your feet talking to hundreds, if not thousands of people, itโs all over so quickly. It actually reminded me of what it was like to wedding plan, but just in a shorter space of time. You spend hours planning your big day from decor, guest list and invites, choosing the right outfit, jewellery and hair and makeup, then in one day itโs all over! Social Media vs Reality. Let me share an industry secret with you. When you see an image in a magazine or on social media thereโs a high chance editing goes into it. However I wanted to show a behind the scenes picture (image 2) taken in natural light just before we started shooting. When you see the makeup side by side youโll notice thereโs not much difference in the final picture (image 1). I canโt stand to see blurred skin thatโs unattainable to achieve. Iโve had overly edited images of my makeup sent to me before (without my choice) and I find it highly frustrating. It defies the purpose of being a MAKE-UP ARTIST. My bridal photos and videos on Instagram are not filtered, the only edits I do for pictures might be cropping or adjusting the brightness if it was a bit too dark / shadowy. But the skin and makeup is never altered. Social media can be very misleading, I still see countless posts of filtered makeup. As as a bride itโs hard to know if youโre choosing an artist who actually understands skin and makeup, or someone who slaps on some foundation quickly and then will edit it to make it look good for the gram. When I have brides come to me saying they donโt want lashes, itโs sometimes because they are scarred from seeing those super heavy lashes that stand out from a mile away. Itโs been a long time since I shot a campaign, pregnancy and then mum life had meant this part of my make-up career had slowed down dramatically. As I eagerly waited to shoot for almost 1 1/2 years I had been picturing what my next beauty shoot would look like. I wanted to show a different side to my make-up, something more sculpted and glam but done the Ganga way, where the elements of natural skin still shone through. If you think itโs a quick 15-20 minute job, think again as hereโs whatโs involved in โsimpleโ curls: โณHair prep, firstly product needs to be applied through the hair onto straight, blow dried untangled hair. If the hair is not straight, dried and untangled then extra time needed to get this in order. โณEach section of hair to be styled with the same amount of hair, the same way, and held for the same amount of time. โณPotentially adding extensions in like I did for @anvi_patel , these also need to be prepped and curled. โณ time for the curls to set so they last. โณThen comes the actual styling of the hair, whether thatโs separating or gathering to curls in a set way. โณIf youโre adding a twist or braid then this needs additional time to be styled. โณThen finishing off the style with serums / sprays to set, to also adding and setting and jewellery. Bollywood meets bridal ๐ฅฐ real bride @priya_flora looking like a #Bollywood princess in this custom @taruntahiliani *GET THE LOOK* The makeup consisted of an intense skin prep regime using @lameruk The Concentrate, Eye concentrate and @embryolisseuk lair-crรจme . The foundation based was minimal with some colour correcting using @bobbibrown correctors and foundation using airbrush makeup for a natural and smooth looking based. An alternative to airbrush I would suggest either @armanibeauty Luminous Silk or @esteelauderuk Double Wear Light depending on your skin type. To create that beautiful soft glow I used a bit of the @charlottetilbury Beauty Light Wand over the apples of the cheeks. Then just light dust of powder to set the look by @charlottetilbury For the lips I used the @benefitcosmeticsuk Cha Cha Tint lip stain, allowed it to dry then used @charlottetilbury Pillowtalk lipstick on top. For this subtle reception make-up change for @nimigulati I actually spent more time removing excess sindoor from the hair and glue from the tikka than I did actually touching up the make-up!! Itโs a misconception that it takes less time for civil hair and makeup compared to the Asian wedding day. Infact for myself, the make-up time is fairly similar for the majority of my brides because the same level of skin prep and care is needed. The make-up still needs to be blended properly, the lashes need to still be applied correctly, and so on. And with hair it all depends on the style. Sometimes the simple hair doโs requested for civil weddings are time consuming due to the precision and care needed to make it look effortless. The main time difference between civil and Asian wedding really occurs with the ๐ฅ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ด๐ด๐ช๐ฏ๐จ. An Asian wedding lengha and jewellery can take a bit longer to style than a traditional white wedding dress with just a pair of stud earrings. So the overall time of a booking is only effected by around 15 minutes, and itโs because of the dressing more than anything else. So when requesting quotes with your chosen MUA bare in mind there may not be a huge time or price difference between packages. Your artist may only be there for a slightly shorter period of time (again probably due to the dressing). Absolutely thrilled to see two of my close friends get married this weekend. Literally been waiting for @_emma_bentley_ and @narinderkhraud to tie the knot and I could not be more happier for two people. I was honoured when Emma asked me to do her make-up, we had the most perfect, relaxed morning plannedโฆ little did we know weโd wake up to ๐ง๐จ ๐๐ฅ๐๐๐ญ๐ซ๐ข๐๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ, ๐ง๐จ ๐ฅ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ๐ฌ, a hairdresser who was too far away to travel in the horrendous weather and the bridesmaid MUA who didnโt turn up. Despite all this drama at 6am Emma was so calm. We managed to get a replacement hairdresser and I worked extra fast to try to glam up the 4 bridesmaids as well as Emma and her mum. Not quite sure how we managed this but so happy it all came together in the end.
