New #Beer On Tap - Never brewed this style before but figured, after last year’s tasting of some of the club’s brews, I had it on my short list! The #California #Common ( #CaliCommon ) was made famous by #AnchorSteam out in #SanFrancisco. This one is supposed to be similar but I can’t remember the last time I had a Steam #Beer. On top of that, one of the things I adore about my kegerator are the custom made tap handles! @tiny_pail created these beautiful handles during the Pandemic and every time I put a new beer on tap and change the name I smile. My last one. The end of an era. One of the beers that pulled me into homebrewing. Amber ale, fermented cooler than most ales. Minty northern brewer hops with a nice crystal malt backbone. Unfortunately, I recently discovered that several iconic restaurants in San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf have permanently closed due to the impact of Covid-19. It’s disheartening to hear that Guardino’s, Pompei’s Grotto, Taratino’s, Allotto’s, Castagnola, Fisherman’s Grotto, and Lou’s Fish Shack have all shut their doors for good. My connection to these restaurants goes back to my childhood. I remember visiting Guardino’s with my grandparents during our trips to San Francisco Bay area in the 1960s and 1970s. It was there that I had my first taste of clam chowder served in a bread bowl, and it left a lasting impression on me. As an adult, I had the opportunity to work for a company headquartered in the Bay area. Whenever I traveled to San Francisco for business, I made it a point to find my way to Fisherman’s Warf to get a bowl of clam chowder and an Anchor Steam beer. Exploring the city with my camera in hand was also a favorite pastime of mine, as San Francisco offers countless photographic opportunities. During one of my visits to Fisherman’s Wharf, I stumbled upon Pompei’s Grotto on Jefferson Street, just a few blocks away from the iconic Fisherman’s Wharf sign. This family sized establishment had been serving delicious food since 1946. Whether I chose to dine in the restaurant or grab a seat at the bar, the chowder was always great and the Anchor Steam beer cold. Although it’s sad to see these beloved restaurants close their doors, the Fisherman’s Wharf organization assures us that there are still many establishments carrying on the rich tradition of San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf. Enjoying a San Francisco classic that is no longer brewed, as production ceased in 2023. The Anchor brewery was founded in 1896 in San Francisco California. The main beer that they produced was Anchor Steam beer a lager that was fermented at Ale temperatures, originally in wooden barrels, that were set aside to vent or steam, to let off excess carbon dioxide during fermentation. The brewery survived prohibition, and then went through some tough times in the early 1960s and was purchased by Fritz Maytag, who revamped the brewery and launched the craft beer revolution in the United States. The brewery was eventually sold to a Japanese beer conglomerate that decided it just wasn’t making the profit margins that they wanted, and unfortunately closed the brewery down in 2023. There has been talk amongst American craft brewers to revive and re-open the brewery, but time will tell. Anchor Steam Christmas Ale was my favorite Christmas beer. Unfortunately, this summer, I learned that Anchor is no more. At one point I heard they were going to still make the Christmas beer but only at the brewery (which I would've jumped on a flight and gotten some). But then a few weeks later I was told everything was shut down. All of Anchor. So, I gathered up as much Anchor Xmas as I could. I already had some 2017 & '19. I was able to gather a case of 2022. Last night I tasted a '17 & '22. (They age) The '22 tasted better than the '17. I'll have to see how they are next year. So long Anchor. I've loved the Xmas ale since '98. My first California Common is coming in nicely! This not-so-common style is an amber lager that uses rustic hops and ferments warmer than you typically would for a lager. After the news of @anchorbrewing closing down, I decided to brew a "Steam" beer clone using malt I had lying around, which turned out to be the perfect base for this beer! I ended up dry hopping with some extra Northern Brewer hops during fermentation to try to pack more of that rustic woody flavor & aroma into the beer. Very happy with how this one came out!! Time to get it into competitions 🤙🏼
