Spring Salmon are starting to be caught today. Water conditions where better than yesterday. Canterland had the first Salmon caught by Neil Cargill on a Alu Monkey. Then Balmakewan a few minutes later caught by Keith Webster on a Super Snaelda. Himalayan Balsam a native plant of the Himalayas not the river banks of the North and South Esk’s. It has a very pretty flower and the seed pods are spectacular at spreading their seeds. An invasive plant that will take over every thing. This week the we hosted a Volunteer Water Bailiff Training Day at Balmakewan Fishing beat on the North Esk. This was attended by a total of six Volunteer Water Bailiffs from the North and South Esk. Mike Brown, the Operations Manager from the Tay DSFB, led an in-depth practical session relating to communication, procedures, conflict management, fisheries legislation and providing statements to the police. Water Bailiff training in Scotland is led by the Institute of Fisheries Management. All Water Bailiffs (volunteer and professional) must complete and pass an exam covering legislation, practical operations and court procedures before being issued with a Warrant of Appointment by the local District Salmon Fishery Board.
