Sometimes helping nature can be as simple as letting things be. My daughter who lives in a home outside Atlanta that backs up to a 2,500-acre state park found this American toad in her yard. She’s super busy and doesn’t garden but loves nature and wants to maintain a healthy yard. She’s lucky and can extend the habitat of the park into her yard mainly by doing no harm. Her yard is easy to maintain because there are overstory trees, no grass, and the space is not overwhelmed by invasives. She just leaves the leaves, doesn’t use any yard chemicals, keeps her yard dark at night, and doesn’t use any kind of gas-powered yard equipment. Coexisting with nature in her yard has rewards. Since she moved in, she’s had many wildlife encounters including this American toad. (She put him in her hand briefly to show the size) Toads need water nearby to breed (the park has water sources close to her home) But toads don’t live in water – they just need safe, moist cover during the day - like the deep layers of leaves in my daughter’s yard. Toads, like other amphibians have permeable skin and are particularly vulnerable to pesticides so her chemical-free yard offers safe toad habitat. Today I recharged and reset for the week with a nature walk through the trails at the 120-acre Mason Mill Park then the 154-acre Lullwater Preserve at Emory University. We’re lucky to have so many natural areas throughout our Atlanta neighborhoods. In the first photo I focused on the natural beauty of the natural areas. At this time of the year the natural color palette is various shades of brown with bits of burnt orange and the occasional pop of color with the very last of the native asters. The second photo was also taken during the walk. It shows the power of invasive privet to outcompete native species and how it is overtaking so much of Atlanta’s natural areas. Privet is evergreen and stands out by creating a green forest where deciduous native plants would typically be more seasonally brown. It’s overwhelming how much privet is out there! Unfortunately, unlike many states now restricting the planting, buying, selling, and transporting of invasive plants, Georgia still allows them to be sold. This means in Georgia hungry birds will continue to eat seeds of invasive species like privet and contribute to their spread. We can help stop the sale of invasives on a personal level by explaining the harm they do whenever the opportunity comes up. Every person we can help choose native over invasives or remove the privet in their yard helps support a healthier local ecosystem. WOOD DUCK — The story behind the November 2024 calendar image. I have always been amazed by Wood Ducks. They remind me of stained glass windows in some ways, and as a gorgeous silk fabric design in another. Regardless, whenever I come upon them, it is a surprise and delight. This particular day it was very surprising, as I was at Mason Mill Park, walking the boardwalk along Peachtree Creek. I looked down into the area where the water is more still and gathers, and there in the reeds was this Wood Duck. His colors, combined with the play of light on the water against the colors of the bottom of the stream were almost magical. Atlanta leaders talk big about climate change, yet seem oblivious to the immense carbon footprint homeowners, businesses, and the city parks department creates - particularly in the fall. Crews are paid to harm their own health by chasing down every last leaf in sight with gas-powered leaf blowers, shredding them to dust with heavy duty lawn mowers, bagging them up as trash, and driving trucks full of this precious natural resource two hours away to another state to be incinerated. This ridiculous ecological carnage is destroying the ecosystem of our city, contributing to the alarming insect and bird decline, and causing pollution every step of the way. It’s also tragic that a generation is growing up in sanitized, lifeless yards where starting in September the natural connection to the season is replaced with plastic decorations. This isn’t about the decoration though - you’ll find a few “scary” yard decorations in my yard every Halloween. The difference is you can tell the season in my rewilded yard without any props, and you can’t in yards scrubbed of leaves, acorns, and other natural matter (and planted with exotic ornamental evergreens). You also won’t find the wildlife that needs the shelter of the leaves including butterflies, caterpillars, fireflies, lizards, and frogs. If the only way to tell the season is because of a plastic decoration, a few pumpkins, and non-native mums, we’re in deep environmental trouble on so many levels. We need to leave the leaves for wildlife but also to create lasting memories of the rhythm of fall days filled with crunchy leaves and the natural wonders that come with them. Once your eyes are opened to the unnatural freakiness of leafless fall yards, it will bother you every time you see them. Leaves are life! There’s a protective reason it’s hard to see ground foraging brown thrashers violently “thrashing” the leaves to find insects, or when they’re nesting in dense shrubs only 2-7’ off the ground. I was shocked when I recently learned from someone in the know that the bags of leaves and our precious natural matter that get put on the curb in Atlanta get shipped to Alabama to be incinerated! The term sustainability is used in the virtuous sounding Mayor’s Office of Sustainability and Resilience, but I don’t think it means what they think it means! In a large metropolitan city with the resources for six staff members who have a job to address sustainability why isn’t there a campaign to educate citizens about leaving the leaves? This would both save the city money and help create a healthier environment for people and wildlife. The yards in Atlanta are being scraped of life weekly and the city is complicit in the carnage allowing 20 “yard waste” bags per week per household! Leaves are an immensely valuable natural resource – they contain 50 to 80 percent of the nutrients and plant extracts from the soil and air during the growing season! They are the habitat for insects and urban wildlife. There’s little evidence the @cityofatlantaga is serious about a healthier ecological environment when they proudly talk about Clean Energy (and even have a little logo) yet spend immense resources to increase our carbon footprint by shipping natural resources to another state to burn them! Our state bird in Georgia is the brown thrasher. The main reason for the thrasher population decline is habitat loss. In cities like Atlanta the shrubs, thickets, and leaves the thrasher needs for nesting and foraging are being destroyed and fragmented. Lullwater Preserve offers several scenic trails, great for walking, jogging, and biking. There's a lot to explore, including the old powerhouse tower, a lake, a creek, and more. The park has its share of wildlife too, everything from egrets to turtles to the occasional deer. (Give the Canada geese a wide berth, though; they're a bit aggressive.) Creating habitat works - look at my new friend!! It only took a month for this green/bronze frog to find the wildlife container pond created by repurposing the firepit in our intown (Morningside) Atlanta yard. So far, I’ve seen birds sunning themselves on the rocks and chipmunks checking it out, but thought it took longer for amphibians to find it. I’ve been quiet about the pond so far because it’s so new and there’s more to do to complete it – but I’m too giddy about having a frog in the pond to not share this! Like the bluebirds who showed up when I added a bluebird box, the American bumblebees who showed up when I rewilded my small, urban yard with native plants, the fireflies who showed up when I started leaving the leaves, or the skinks and anoles who showed up when I stopped using pesticides, it looks like frogs and other aquatic wildlife will show up when a wildlife pond appears – even a micro pond like this. I’m not done adding a floating plant to the pond and haven’t figured out where to find a native anchor plant to add, and in the fall when it cools down I need to relandscape around this area and remove the awful landscape fabric my husband put down when he created a firepit a dozen years ago – before we knew how much ecosystem damage landscape fabric causes.
