Welcome to the CLHOF Board, Terry Cottrell! Terry is excited to join the CLHOF Board and says, “This is a time where the social landscape has so many different competing types of media vying for people's attention, with LLMs and AI tools promising much more attractiveness and complexity. The need to emphasize and celebrate original literary work by authors who have set the foundation, by sharing their experiences and talents, for where we are today with local literature is clear to me. I would like to lend my own talents and skills to support these efforts in the Chicago area, because the HOF serves as a beacon for young and old to not just remember how our communities have flourished through the gift of the written word. CLHOF also increases awareness to those who may yet appreciate the gift of reading and writing in their lives as the essential foundation for many of the aspects of society we all enjoy today.” Terry Cottrell is Vice President for Information Technology and Planning at the University of St. Francis in Joliet, Illinois. In addition to 25 years of practitioner expertise in various levels of IT management and academic governance, his career includes 15+ years of teaching work, numerous publications, and presentations about cybersecurity, research trends, budgeting, the effects of media on cognition, hands-free AR tools, copyright, library management, diversity in the workplace, and IT leadership. He has served on numerous non-profit boards and provided angel investments to four successful startups. He has designed and taught a variety of courses at Colorado State University-Global Campus, the University of St. Francis, Northern Illinois University, Northwestern University, and serves as an associate in the School of Professional Studies at Columbia University in the City of New York. Terry spends as much time outside and with family as he can, travels, writes, and is never far from very good coffee. Spring is coming and it’s the perfect time to get out and explore the city 💐🌆 Did you know we have an Interactive Literary Landmark Map on our website? To understand Chicago’s remarkable literary cultural, it is essential to visit the sites, both here and gone, that figured so prominently in the lives of our greatest authors. Through the places associated with Chicago’s literary figures, we can tell the story of our great authors, their stories, and, indeed, our city. Our Literary Map of Chicago identifies some of Chicago’s most significant literary places, and will be the basis for a series of more narrowly-defined maps that delve deeper into individual histories. The map will evolve over time, and in the future we hope to publish contrasting photos—archival and contemporary—to pinpoint the past and present realities of each site. Recent Blog The Great Michelle Moore: An Interview By Donald G. Evans “I visited seven University and Research Library Archives over nine years. You go through lists of materials, asking them to pull boxes, sifting through contents, and requesting more boxes. It takes an unbelievable amount of time and most of the time, you don’t even know exactly what you’re looking for.” Chicago literature factors into every Chicago Literary Hall of Fame program, even a fundraiser like The Great Gimlet. While we acknowledge that cocktails and jazz and delicious appetizers are the draw, we can’t lose site of the evening’s connection to Chicago’s great literary heritage. Michelle, who gave a short talk for the Great Gimlet evening about Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby, and Chicago, made sure of that. Through her rigorous studies and writing, Michelle managed to contextualize these important works, and make connections between the authors and their influences. Chicago held critical sway on Fitzgerald and many others, like Willa Cather and Ernest Hemingway. 👨‍💻A message from Donald G. Evans I spent an hour today googling around 👖“what kind of trousers did men wear in the 20s?” ✂️“facial hair Jazz Age” 🎩Great Gatsby-style hats” I foraged around the house for a pocket watch I used to wear but has been AWOL since about 2003. (No luck yet). I chose the color “coffee” for my (vaguely) 20s-style vest, wavering only briefly before I hit “confirm order.”   The amazing Colvin House is helping us plan The Great Gimlet, which will start at 7 p.m. on Saturday, February 24. Mike Burke came up with the idea for this fundraiser four years ago, when we were trying to navigate our way through the early days of the pandemic. The concept is simple: we pair Chicago literature with cocktails. Our mixologist Ryan Prindle shows us how to make the upscale cocktails (we also send each guest a pdf cocktail booklet so you can make them again later). Somebody really smart—this year scholar Michelle Moore—tells us about the connections between Chicago literature and the drinks. The esteemed magician Robert Charles along with Rita, joins Mike in leading us through these intermissions.   Mostly, though, it’s just a party that raises money for the Chicago Literary Hall of Fame This is one of CLHOF’s two fundraisers for the year—most everything else we do is free and open to the public. Registration for this event is $125. Money raised goes towards our programming throughout the year. Always, people wait until the VERY last minute to commit. You watch: I’ll be getting phone calls and texts even as I’m enjoying my first cocktail, “Hey, for some reason, the website is saying registration is closed. Can you help?” NO—I can’t help—I’m busy DRINKING. Do the right thing here: https://chicagoliteraryhof.org/events_entry/the-great-gimlet #CLHOF #ChicagoLiteraryHallOfFame #eventsinchicago #chicago #eventsinchi #roaringtwenties #chicagohistory #history

The Great Gimlet 🍸 For the fourth straight year, the Chicago Literary Hall of Fame will host a literary cocktail party. This year it’s The Great Gimlet, and the fabulous Colvin House will be our partners for the evening. This is a fundraiser. For $125, you’ll get food, literary enlightenment, and (three) drinks. Mostly drinks. Mixologist Ryan Prindle will make drinks based on Chicago’s connection to The Great Gatsby. Scholar Michelle Moore will tell us how Chicago socialite Ginevra King became the model for F. Scott Fitzgerald’s character, Daisy Buchanan. Rita Dragonette will help host; Mike Burke and Robert Charles will again serve as our impressarios. Limited registration opens the first week of January. Built in 1909, Colvin House was designated as a Chicago landmark in 1994. The house was built in the Prairie Style, by architect George Maher, then the house interior was mostly renovated in the 1920s. The party will mostly be in the basement speakeasy. Sign up today, space is limited! https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-great-gimlet-literary-cocktail-party-tickets-800182004917?utm-campaign=social&utm-content=attendeeshare&utm-medium=discovery&utm-term=listing&utm-source=cp&aff=ebdsshcopyurl #CLHOF #cocktailparty #chicagohistory #chicagoliteraryhalloffame #authors #writers #chicagoevents #gimlet
