Killing Cloud (1991). A fairly unique game, you play as a cop in futuristic San Francisco which is covered by a thick layer of smog (the titular cloud) and you have to fly around in a polygon 3D view completing a variety of missions to apprehend targets. Sometimes you just blast them but there are also other types of missions. Killing Cloud was made by Vector Grafix who were better known for flight sims like B-17 Flying Fortress. This game makes me think of Blade Runner and the first Tex Murphy game Mean Streets. Amiga Power magazine famously gave Killing Cloud the low score of 65% and Vector Grafix wrote a scathing letter to the magazine... which Amiga Power proceeded publish in the next magazine issue! Oggi per me è un anniversario importante in quanto quarant'anni fa, più o meno in questo periodo, acquistavo il mio primo computer: l'indimenticabile e mitico Commodore Vic-20. Correva l'anno 1984 e questo simpatico aggeggio mi costò 199.000 lire + IVA e quindi esattamente 235.000 lire! Da quel momento per me si aprì un mondo nuovo, una breccia spazio-temporale che mi ha permesso di entrare nel mondo dell'informatica, anche se, tutto sommato, col senno di poi, con scarsi risultati! Ma non importa... Da quando lo misi in funzione provai da subito l'impulso irrefrenabile di "programmare" con il suo Basic e praticamente da allora non ho mai smesso, soprattutto per hobby. Throwback #2 A trip down memory lane, revisiting my best retro finds! Commodore PC-1 25-08-2019 I never knew Commodore was also in the IBM compatibles business. But I found out by accident, when I was doing some reading on the web. I became curious and when I started to look for one, I found this one on an auction website. We agreed on a price of 60€. One problem though, I had to drive 40 minutes to pick it up. Shipping would not have been wise… When I arrived, he had the machine hooked up and I could test it. It was all pretty yellowed, but I don’t really mind. Luckily, the system came with a box full of disks and one of them was with MS-DOS. Back in those days, an entire operating system would fit on one small floppy disk. The rest of the disks were filled with games. Really awesome! The monitor is a CGA monitor. Remember the ugly colours? Magenta, cyan… I will never forget them. The man who sold me the Commodore was a really nice guy. We started talking about my hobby of collecting vintage computers and video game consoles. He told me he had more stuff I might be interested in. And that was true. He offered me a Sanyo MSX, complete with data recorder, a box with cassette tapes, books and a joystick. All of that for only 30€ more. That day was really a good day! I only had the cash to pay for the commodore. So I had to go to an atm to get the rest of the cash to pay the man. But I was there on a Sunday and it was in a religious area of my country. No atm’s would work on Sunday… So that meant another drive, looking for a working atm! Luckily I found one and I got to go home with not one, but two systems! In the editorial senior editor Hans Ippisch talks about the downfall of Commodore, but keeps the hopes up that the Amiga business will continue, possibly saved by some investor or buyer. At the time of writing Commodore was negotiating with Samsung. Today we know that this didn't worked out. After a short episode with Escom the ultimate commercial end of the Amiga was 1996.
