240424 in #London, UK Watching 2 musicals in a day after 3.5 hrs of sleep, doing proper tourist stuff with the pet duck, having German chicken doner in Soho Jetlagged, sleep-deprived and freezing but had an amazing day and both the shows were magnificent, I regret nothing ✨️ #Cabaret - one of the best performances I've watched, ever! 🎭 The Facts Show: Sister Act: The Musical Date: Thursday 18th April Theatre: Dominion Theatre Seat: XX42 (stalls) Star rating: 2.5/5 The Review Based on the 1992 movie of the same name, this camply fun musical makes a return the West End after a number of UK tours. Ruth Jones, of Gavin and Stacey fame, takes on the role of Mother Superior, previously played by the likes of Sheila Hancock and Jennifer Saunders. Playing opposite her is British actress and singer/songwriter Beverley Knight, who seems to be having a blast in the role, and gets to show off her musical talents. The story sees lounge singer Deloris Van Cartier (Knight) witness a murder and be placed in protective custody within a Philadelphian convent. Facing up to an alien way of life, and batting heads with the Mother Superior (Jones), Deloris finds some much needed purpose once introduced to the convent choir, and discovers a community that teaches her things about herself, and provides her with new and enduring relationships. It's a fun musical, which some impressive set pieces, and a few catchy songs, the best of which feature Knights indisputable vocal range. It's quite a broad show with a mass appeal, that occasionally veers into Pantomime. It doesn't have the heart or depth of musicals such as The Little Big Things or Standing on the Sky's Edge, and the songs are fairly forgettable. That said, it was a fun and enjoyable evening, and judging by the standing ovation at the end, the 2000 strong audience were thoroughly entertained. Verdict Having been spoilt recently with some fantastic musicals, which have had both heart and pathos, this felt a little insubstantial for me. However the broad appeal of it was evident by the audience reaction, and whilst it may not be in my normal wheelhouse, I did enjoy the over the top spectacle of it. What a treat watching Sister Act at the Dominion Theatre on Thursday evening ⛪️🎭. A properly feel-good show that makes you feel fabulous (baby) 🪩. As a Welshman, it was a real treat seeing Ruth Jones live on stage and I particularly appreciated the little Welsh references that had been added (no spoilers… 🏴🧦). Beverley Knight blew the roof off the Dominion on more than one occasion - an incredible voice and a great accent too. Lesley Joseph was made for her part and I can’t move like that now - let alone at 78! MATT HENRY JOINS THE PREMIERE PRODUCTION OF THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA!!! Henry, whose stage credits include Kinky Boots, Saturday Night Fever and The Drifters Girls, will play Nigel – the role created on screen by Stanley Tucci – alongside the previously announced Vanessa Williams as the fearsome Miranda Priestly. The musical has a score by Elton John (music) and Shaina Taub (lyrics) and book by Kate Wetherhead – with direction and choreography by Jerry Mitchell (who also directed Henry in Kinky Boots). The show will open first at Theatre Royal Plymouth for a preliminary run from the 9th July 2024, with a West End season to then follow from the 24th October 2024 at the Dominion Theatre. Last Thursday night, me and @trimwithtina went to the press night of @sisteractsocial. It was wonderful for me to go back to my favourite West End theatre so soon after my first visit and on such a special night too💫 It was wonderful to be amongst so many smiling, famous faces and we bumped into @t0shee too which is always a sheer pleasure. The sound was crystal clear and everybody was just fantastic, the entire cast thrived from the very beginning. The nuns as a collective were so hilarious and had great chemistry both amongst each other and with Bev. A standout for me was @taliakbrown as Tina, just putting so much heart and personality into the role, although Natalia is new I couldn’t imagine the show without her now💚 @officiallesleyjoseph is a wonderful presence on stage, showing sheer joy the entire time she is there which radiates through the audience, @carlmullaney is a brilliant Monsignor with his slick dance moves and natural interactions with the audience and @ruthjonesnews is able to bring something fresh and new to the role of Mother Superior that was a joy to watch😌 Of course it goes without saying that @beverleyknight shone from the moment she opened her mouth just a few minutes into the show. For those who may not have seen her before there could be no doubt that she was meant to be there, tackling a huge score with ease and letting her sensational voice fill the @dominiontheatre right up.
