The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare Movie Review: The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is the adaptation of Churchill's Secret Warriors that follows a group of rogue spies led by Gus March-Phillipps (Henry Cavill) who are recruited by British intelligence to decommission nazi u-boats by destroying the supplier vessel on the island of Fernando Po to gain an advantage in early WWII. The Guy Ritchie co-written and directed film is a consistently entertaining and fun action adventure that wisely utilizes Guy Ritchie's signature style for action sequences and combines it with an intriguing espionage story that rarely drags across its two hour runtime due to its good performances and pacing. The film establishes its based on true events premise in the first scene where Gus March and his archery expert associate Anders Lassen (ALan Ritchson) pretending to be gay swedish fishermen for Nazi officers and the comedic timing of these two actors starts the film off on the right note. While the film does incorporate a unnecessary brief non-linear narrative to properly introduce Gus and his associates after an engaging opening action sequence where his team blows up a nazi warship, Ungentlemanly Warfare works well in briefly explaining its slightly complex story in efficient fashion where Gus is sent to rescue his captured comrade Geoffrey Appleyard (Alex Pettyfer) from a nazi camp while recruited spies Mr. Heron and former actress Majorie Stewart (Babs Olusanmokun and Eiza Gonzalez) are to sent to Fernando Po to grow close to nazi tradesman Heinrich Luhr (Til Schweiger) and set up the mission. All of the characters including explosives expert Freddy Alvarez (Henry Golding), Gus's apprentice Henry Hayes (Hero Fiennes Tiffin) and intelligence recruiter Brigadier Gubbins M (Cary Elwes) are given good yet brief characterizations that help differentiate themselves from one another despite their lack of backstory. What makes the film mainly work is the well paced narrative that knows when to incorporate entertaining action sequences to entice the audience and give its characters a good dynamic where the action movie quips make sense. Pendant que les garçons finissent de faire un sort au framboisier, j'en profite pour vous parler de ma dernière lecture. L'espion du débarquement par Patrick Query. Comme le titre l'indique c'est de l'espionnage et ça parle du débarquement du 6 juin 1944. Plus précisémment des jours qui ont précédé. Alors je lis très peu voir pas de livre d'espionnage. Les intrigues en mode complot, type accusé à la place d'un autre et machinations politiques c'est pas ma tasse de thé. Et la 2nd guerre mondiale j'en lis peu parce que j'ai peu d'occasions. Là on est autant sur du policier/enquête que de l'espionnage. L'auteur est un auteur de biographies historiques (ici c'est un pseudo) Nous allons croiser les agents du MI-6, MI-5, de la LCS (London Controlling Section) chargée de créer des infos bidons pour tromper l'ennemi, sous les ordres directs de Churchill, le XX Comittee (chargé de retourner les agents ennemis), Scotland Yard... Entre personnages fictifs et réels tels Churchill ou Montgomery, Eisenhower... il reste quelques jours au lieutenant Alan Lester pour remonter la fuite qu'il a mise à jour et qui pourrait faire échouer l'opération Overlord. Course contre la montre, indices ténus, hypothèses... un ennemi insaisissable, espion parfait qui a trompé tout le monde depuis des années...Balladés entre le Pays de Galles et la campagne anglaise, on tourne les pages avec fébrilité, croisant les doigts pour qu'Alan arrive à temps. Une enquête d'une grande précision historique, qui nous plonge vraiment dans le monde de l'espionnage, dans les jours qui ont précédé le débarquement. On ressent l'urgence, la tension, les enjeux immenses de cette enquête, la pression qui pèse sur Alan. Le coup de maitre de ce livre c'est la fin choisie par l'auteur. Même si on a jamais suivi ses cours d'histoire on sait comment se termine le débarquement et quelle est l'issue de la guerre. Eh bien dans ce livre vous ne saurez rien! Une lecture vraiment agréable qui mêle habilement espionnage, codes du polar, portée historique avec un luxe de détails et d'ancedotes historiques pertinentes et intéressantes. Le rythme est intense, sans temps mort, plein de tension, fluide. #lespiondudebarquement

🌺🎖️Join us in remembering the incredible bravery of John Kenneally, who was awarded a Victoria Cross for his actions during WW2. On 28th April 1943, Kenneally was a 22-year-old lance-corporal in the Irish Guards and was serving at Djebel Bou Azoukaz in Tunisia. He charged alone down the bare forward slope straight into the main body of the enemy about to make an attack, firing his Bren gun from the hip, and the enemy were so surprised that they broke up in disorder. He repeated his exploit on 30 April when, accompanied by a sergeant, he charged the enemy forming up for assault, inflicting many casualties. Even when wounded he refused to give up, but hopped from one fire position to another, carrying his gun in one hand and supporting himself on a comrade with the other. Lately it seems as if Guy Ritchie is releasing movies like his life depends on it. His latest film here highlights some of the ways his trademark style can breathe energy into a story, but also how his scripts can sometimes overwrite themselves. When this movie acts as a historical drama, it’s merely serviceable. The fundamental plot points are clear but some of the details can get blurred into a convoluted mess. When this movie embraces itself as a mindless action flick, however, it is a ton of fun. Ritchie’s witty dialogue compliments the unapologetic violence perfectly. The entire cast delivers in their respective performances. Henry Cavill is obviously the most notable as the leading character, but Eiza González is deserving of recognition for stealing scenes with an effortless charm. I do think this is a solid movie that’s on par for Guy Ritchie’s brand, but unfortunately I don’t think there’s much that makes this stand out as special from the director’s already deep filmography. It’s one of those movies where if you’re interested, you should see it. The Crypt in St Paul's is a wonderful half-lit subterranean space containing the tombs of the 'great and the good' from the past 300 years in Britain, not least the tomb of the architect of the cathedral itself Sir Christopher Wren (with a touching memorial to the masons who worked on the building) (pic 5), as well as painters John Everett Millais (pic 6) and JMW Turner, while the tombs of Admiral Lord Nelson (1+2) and the Duke of Wellington (3) take centre stage - the guide told us that Nelson, Wellington and Sir Winston Churchill are the only three people ever to receive state funerals in St Paul's, and that Churchill is not buried here, as he requested instead to be buried in his home village of Bladon in Oxfordshire. Our guide also told us that the mosaic floor in parts of the crypt were created by women prisoners at Woking Gaol (pic 4). An interesting fact about Nelson's tomb is that he is buried in the granite base and not the black marble sarcophagus on top which was made for Cardinal Wolsey but never used until it was added to Nelson's tomb. These sculptures made of chewing gum and nail polish are on view in conjunction with Rachel Leah Cohn‘s exhibit “Mem.” They were made by her great-grandmother, Margarete Silber, born in Vienna, Austria in 1904. In 1957, Margarete began making sculptures of her family, followed by other sculptures of famous people (such as Moshe Dayan, Charlie Chaplin, Winston Churchill) and other characters she found interesting. Her medium for these was chewing gum (yes, chewing gum!). She would use whatever she could find in nature or at home, to make these: interesting sticks and other findings. She used nail polish and lipstick for these. During a visit to the United State around 1984, Margarete’s granddaughter, Yael, purchased clay for her, to try this medium. She completed a sculpture of a Yael’s cat, but was not satisfied with the medium or outcome. She said she found the gum to be more pliable.
