Have you subscribed yet? This pic is from the very first cover I ever published! When I began working as a publisher, I was excited to host my very first cover-shoot. I ventured out and nervously asked powerful women in the community to be a part of my first Women's Issue. To my surprise those 11 women said yes. And having a photographer that understood what I was looking for and willing to work with an unknown new business was priceless @poemtography. I will be forever grateful to all of them. Now as the publisher of my own magazine, this photo will forever inspire me. I had a wonderful time serving them, and gained a full understanding of what is required to make space for women. I enjoyed spending the day doing my best to make them comfortable. This picture was taken at the beginning of the pandemic, the Friday before Governor Hogan shut the state down and told us to stay home. This photo is truly a time stamp for me. And now, post pandemic, let me tell you something, these ladies are still standing, and I am so proud of all they have achieved since then. As I’ve read more and more in recent years about the old Elkridge Landing area - which dates back to the late 1600s - I’ve learned how important it was in the history of the Patapsco Valley, Maryland and the colonization of this country. It’s wild to imagine this area 300 years ago. Ships made their way up the Patapsco all the way to Elkridge Landing (an impossible feat today) to transport local tobacco, pig iron, grain and other goods. With furnaces and mills popping up throughout the valley over the years, the area was essentially the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution in Maryland. The Brumbaugh House, ca. 1870, in historic Elkridge, MD (Howard County’s first settlement). This Victorian was the home and office of Dr. Benjamin Bruce Brumbaugh who took up residence there in 1919. Dr. Brumbaugh is quite the local legend. His career spanned 6 decades and there are still “Brumbaugh babies” living in the area. Dr. B. only charged his patients $2 a visit which increased to $3 in 1969. “I’d rather treat them for free of charge than have them think I’m overcharging. I work just to keep alive, not for what I can get out of it.” What a great man! In 1986, a year after Dr. Brumbaugh’s death, the Victorian was bought by the Elkridge Heritage Society and the Rotary Club who have preserved the doctor’s office and waiting area, and Dr. B’s legacy. Sadly, the Main Street it sits on, is not much of a Main Street. It is residential with a lack of boutiques and restaurants.
