Do you often say 'yes' to things you really don't want to do? Do you have a tendency to go along just to get along? I didn't realize this pattern in my relationships was a trait of codependency. Especially in relationships with loved one's struggling with addiction, who we don't want to lose connection with, although not exclusively limited to interactions with them. Codependency is also known as the "dis-ease of the lost self." When we go along just to please others, we lose ourselves. Without realizing it, we stop prioritizing our wants and needs in favor of pleasing others. Over time we give greater importance to what others want from us than what we desire ourselves. We lose confidence in our ability to say "no" to others, while growing frustrated and resentful of the demands they place on us. At the same time, we become reluctant to ask anything for ourselves. There's no need to surrender your freedom of choice to others. Relationships are two-way streets. We're not obligated to please everybody all the time.
