“The White Washer” by Christian Orellana Bauer, mixed media collage, 13.5” x 19.5”. Artist statement: "The White Washer" is a simple yet complex question about both manual labor and the whitewashing of history. The piece creates a visual narrative/representation of the colloquial phrase "white washing" by placing a found image of a figure on a piece of paper and giving them the appearance of painting the paper white. This creation of a literal "white washer" hopes to present questions such as: If this position actually existed in our society as a manual labor job, who would be the white washer? Who in our society often work as manual laborers? Who would benefit from this white washing? Who does benefit from the white washing of history currently? These questions are especially important now with the larger conversation of racial justice happening in the United States. Additionally they are necessary within the context of our very white home of Portland/Oregon and it's historical relationship to racism, white supremacy, and the general omission of these histories from it's cultural discussions. #whitewashing #portlandartist #engageinthechange

New “Affordable” Housing by Beth Kerschen. Photomontage Archival Pigment Print, 16x20. Artist statement: After living in Portland for 12 years and photographing every section of the city during this time, I got to know the city very well. Significant changes are happening so fast that it was a shock to me and it inspired a new series of photomontages revolving around this issue. Growth started at a rapid rate after the 2008 recession and additional housing was needed in Portland, but the demolition of older buildings and the construction of newer buildings is happening at such a rapid rate without regard to infrastructure, cultural, and affordability concerns. In this series, I attempt to address these issues through depicting the changes to Portland’s urban landscape. In this piece I am highlighting how older, historical, and more affordable homes are being demolished and replaced with multiple “skinny homes” and selling at twice the cost.
