I've been complaining about the DRAMATIC increase in rent among Democratic Party run cities for a while. Gentrification. The news is finally starting to report on it. It's gotten even WORSE since Biden was elected President due to the rise of inflation. I live in the Kilbourntown neighborhood of Milwaukee today. Not far from the Bucks stadium, the RNC 2024, all the theaters etc. The Gentrification has pushed so many minorities out. And it's not an accident. Democrats in powerful positions in Milwaukee have decided to build luxury apartments all around downtown during an Inflation Crisis. In bed with developers. Unfortunately nobody from his office came out or respond to the protesters requests. Peabody, one of Britain’s biggest providers of social housing, is asking the London mayor, Sadiq Khan, for permission to raze the Lesnes estate in Thamesmead.The residents opposed the idea and in response welcomed housing activists to occupy vacant flats in protest to show that these buildings are not derelict and need to be refurbished not demolished. Some of today’s photographs, here again the smartphone versions of the real 4x5 images. After waiting nearly half the day for cloudy weather (forecast said very cloudy after 1pm, nonsense), I was gifted with the first image here, and got the others too. Persistence payed off finally. Near the train tracks part of the neighborhood is still standing, while huge areas were bulldozed since my last visit. Interestingly, more than 70% of the remaining people living in those old houses are complaining, that the promises of the government to redevelop their area still hasn’t happened since 5 years when it was promised to them. Matt came to Lesnes estate in Abbey Woods area from Bristol to support the local residents on 6th of April 2024. He’s sitting in one of the empty flats occupied now by the protesters. Peabody housing association’s plans for the estate won outline planning permission from Bexley Council for the project in October 2022. The Lesnes Estate, off Yarnton Way, would be demolished as part of the proposals. Protesters moved in on 6th of April and have said they will stay put until Peabody’s executive director, John Lewis, meets them to discuss refurbishing empty homes on the estate instead of demolishing them. ”Today. Over the last few weeks we've been taking a closer look at the neighborhoods around Washington DC that were targeted for destruction for "urban renewal"; this meant the construction of I-395 and I-695. From Divided By Design: I-395/695 consumes at least 311 acres and $3.3 billion in taxable land, according to 2021 DC land assessments. Without the homes that previously existed within the I-395/695 corridor, the city lost the ability to tax approximately $1.4 billion in home value, costing the city at least $7.6 million in property taxes per year (at the 2023 residential property tax rate of 0.54%). During the urban renewal process, 99 percent of buildings in the Southwest quadrant, including 1,500 commercial buildings, were destroyed. I-395/695 displaced at least 4,700 people in 1960. The demographic mix of displaced residents was: 63% Black residents displaced 29% White residents displaced 8% Other At least 1,400 occupied housing units were destroyed, wiping out $483,000 in average home equity, if those homes existed today. Portland, Maine underwent something very similar, albeit, at a smaller scale, with the urban renewal era destruction to build today's Franklin Street arterial. We now have the opportunity to correct his historic injustice and recreate a vibrant mixed use neighborhood once again. On 6th of April 2024 the local residents and activists from @housingrebellion started their long term protest against Peabody Housing association’s decision to demolish the estate. The residents decided to take direct action and are occupying for several weeks few of the abandonned houses there. The residents group has pledged to stay there until a conversation is opened between them and Peabody’s executive director, John Lewis, to discuss refurbishing empty homes on the estate instead of demolishing them. ”Today.
