“The death of Charles Leo Daniel at the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma piqued the interest of immigrant rights advocates and some members of Washington’s congressional delegation. The mystery surrounding his death and the fact that he was housed in solitary confinement for most of the time he was incarcerated is cause for concern. Daniel, from the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, entered the U.S. through Miami on a visitor’s visa in July 2000. He was convicted of second degree murder in King County in October 2003 and was incarcerated at the Washington Corrections Center in Shelton. He was held in solitary confinement for nearly 10 years in state prisons and for four years at the detention center. “More than a month after a man died at an immigrant detention center in Tacoma, federal officials released a report, as required by Congress. The report lacked one key detail: a cause of death. That’s what many have been asking for after 61-year-old Charles Leo Daniel, a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago, died March 7 at the Northwest ICE Processing Center, a large privately run facility in Tacoma holding immigrants facing deportation proceedings. The missing information was disapprovingly noted by ICE critics. This week, a man killed his wife & 3 children, then himself, leaving his 10 year old child to discover the carnage. In addition, Tennessee House lawmakers voted to allow concealed carry weapons on school campus’. These are just the two firearm stories that have gotten big press this week. There are countless others we may never hear about. My mother in law witnessed the brutal firearm homicide of her daughter & 3 granddaughters. We became her caregiver that day as well as those responsible for all the choosing of caskets and attending of trials. This means that, what may feel to you like just another news story, hits a little too close to home here at my house. I want to share a few facts with you: 1) Guns are the number 1 killer of children in the U.S. 2) On average, 70 women are shot & killed by an intimate partner every month in the U.S. 3) More guns (especially in places where children are gathered) do NOT make us more safe. If more guns everywhere made us safer, America would be the safest country on earth. Instead, the U.S. gun homicide rate is 26x higher than that of other high-income countries. Lawmakers in at least 6 other states are currently considering laws that would bring more firearms onto school campuses. Soon, the Supreme Court will announce their decision in the Rahimi case which could allow individuals with domestic violence restraining orders against them to still purchase & own guns. Please do your research as we head into an election season. Our algorithms feed us more of what we already know so it’s incumbent upon us, as Aunties & Uncles, Parents & Teachers, Neighbors & Friends to protect the lives of our children…& they ALL are OUR children. Do your best to get some much-deserved rest and try to fall asleep on your side later in pregnancy. And if it's any consolation, at least one study has found that restless sleep in late pregnancy seems to be protective against stillbirth! The data has shown in five separate international research trials that there is a link between stillbirth (being 2-8 times more likely, depending on the study) and going to sleep on your back in the third trimester (after 28 weeks of pregnancy). ​So what are the recommendations? From about 28-30 weeks onward, you should try to fall asleep on your side (either side is fine!). If you wake up on your back, do not worry - research has shown that you likely spent the deepest and longest part of your sleep on your side, and rolling to your back is probably what woke you up. Just roll over onto your side and go back to bed, sleepyhead! ​And what if you can't get comfortable on your side? The goal is to get the weight of your tummy off your back, so as long as your hips are tilted (~30° off the bed), that should do it. Some people find that sleep positioners or wedges help.
