“Kansas still lacks a State Energy Plan to guide policy, even though the state has had a water plan for years. We need a good roadmap that factors in all costs, including effects to public health and our environment, to get us to energy solutions that are low-cost, safe and reliable.” –Zack Pistora Check out this must-read OpEd from Sierra Club’s Zack Pistora on how the Kansas legislative session is feeling like a dysfunctional road trip this year without a State Energy Plan to guide us. The Douglas County / Lawrence Planning Commission will discuss the first utility-scale solar farm application in Douglas County on Monday night, Dec. 18th, 6:30pm, at the City Commission Room of City Hall, Lawrence, Kansas. This proposed 159MW solar farm by Savion, a Kansas City-based company, would be the biggest solar farm in Kansas and could help secure important clean energy for Evergy to retire its coal operations at Lawrence Energy Center. We need caring Douglas County residents to attend and speak in favor of the proposed solar farm. Here is the link to Savion's Kansas Sky Energy Center website, a great source of project information including the details on application documents, FAQs, and more. https://www.kansasskyenergycenter.com/ See you there! #FossilFreeKS #EvergyCanDoBetter #Solar #SolarPower #RenewableEnergy #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #CommunitySolar #CleanPower #EnergyJustice #EnergyEquity #EnvironmentalJustice #FossilFuels #UtilityJustice #Kansas

Thanks to Lawrence-based artist Lisa Grossman for sharing this beautiful painting and reference photo. Lisa says about her painting: "Back in June of 2021 the river was “dewatered” for some repair work at Bowersock dam. I took advantage of the opportunity to see the sandbars emerging upstream toward the power plant, something I’d never seen before. I painted a view that cropped out the smokestack but as you can see from a photo from another angle, the power plant is clearly visible. For decades I’ve painted “around” the power plant, never in my wildest dreams imagining that it might actually go away at some point. For the health of the river and every being who’s breathing smokestack emissions, I hope the plant is decommissioned sooner than later as originally planned." Thanks to Lawrence-based artist Sara Taliaferro for allowing us to share her environmentally-themed painting on our page. Taliaferro writes: "The Hand Played" (2008) is a watercolor and acrylic painting depicting a clump of prairie sod, brimming with an entire ecosystem, cradled in a human hand. Another human drops a losing poker hand of cards depicting symbols of human misuse and destruction of nature's bounty. Oil barrels, water, petrochemicals, deforestation...and at the bottom, coal plants spewing smoke into the atmosphere." Please sign our petition to the Lawrence City and Douglas County Commissioners today. Let's keep Evergy from playing a losing hand! https://sc.org/coalfreelawrence #FossilFreeKS #EvergyCanDoBetter #Solar #SolarPower #RenewableEnergy #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #CommunitySolar #CleanPower #EnergyJustice #EnergyEquity #EnvironmentalJustice #FossilFuels #UtilityJustice #Kansas #kansasartist #kansasartists #lawrenceartists #environmentalart #environmentalartist #environmentalartists

Evergy is over-invested in coal, has no robust solar programs that could save customers hundreds of millions of dollars, and is proposing new expensive gas that will cost customers even more in the long term. Evergy spends about $500 million of its customers' money annually purchasing coal from Wyoming for its coal-burning power plants, which is just one of many costs of operating these plants. This money should instead be invested in renewable energy in Kansas, installed by workers in Kansas! Please let the Lawrence and Douglas County commissioners know how you feel about Evergy burning coal or gas at their plant in Lawrence. #FossilFreeKS #EvergyCanDoBetter #Solar #SolarPower #RenewableEnergy #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #CommunitySolar #CleanPower #EnergyJustice #EnergyEquity #EnvironmentalJustice #FossilFuels #UtilityJustice #Kansas
