So excited to share that I am apart of the 2024 Peace Pole project, presented by the Lenexa Art Council and Lenexa Rotary Club! All 36 poles are located at Black Hoof Park, near the boat ramp! Local artists and organizations decorated these poles with symbols of peace. They will be up till the fall, where they will then be auctioned off for charity! This is my second time participating in this project- I love seeing all the amazing work people do! This pole has ceramic sculptures on it of Kansas items- a barn, a turtle, windmills, bison, sunflowers, wheat, meadowlarks, an airplane, and more. There are some little worms painted on the bottom, and other hidden features! Go check it out, along with all the other poles!! #peace #peacepole #peacepoles #peacepoleproject #peacepolesproject #lenexa #kansascity #kansas #kansasartist #landscape #sculpture #sculptures #ceramics #ceramicinstallation

Mother's Day is just around the corner! Show your appreciation for the important women in your life with a heartfelt gift of art! "Barn Light" is my interpretation of one of our amazing rural Kansas sunsets. Replicating architecture is not my greatest strength, but I love thinking of the many thousands of sunrises and sunsets this barn has been witness to...not one single one with the same patterns or colors. Print of the Day: "Sermon" by Robert Hodgell captures a thought-provoking scene of a pastor passionately expounding from the Bible, yet what emanates from his mouth is simply a cloud of "words." This striking print underscores Hodgell's recurring theme—the potent, sometimes overwhelming, influence of words in our communication. In this artwork, the pastor, depicted with exaggerated features and a dynamic pose, appears to be in the midst of an intense sermon. The words spewing from his mouth swirl around his head, creating a visual cacophony that suggests a flood of rhetoric. The bold, dark lines and the sharp contrasts enhance the dramatic effect, focusing attention on the expression and the words themselves. Hodgell seems to question the essence and impact of spoken words: Are they merely sounds that vanish into the air, or do they hold the power to enlighten, persuade, or even manipulate? "Sermon" invites viewers to contemplate the role of language and its capacity to convey deep truths or to simply act as noise in the background. Through this print, Hodgell challenges us to reflect on whether the words delivered in sermons—or in any discourse—are imbued with genuine meaning or are just part of an endless stream of empty rhetoric. The interpretation, as Hodgell might suggest, ultimately rests with the listener. Print of the Day: "Colleagues" by Robert Hodgell presents a dramatic and symbolic portrayal of conflict, depicted here through two graduates engaged in a fierce battle using weapons formed from "words." The image is a potent metaphor for the intellectual and verbal confrontations often seen in academic and professional arenas, where debates can become as contentious and destructive as physical combat. The graduate wielding an intact word sword, raised menacingly, appears victorious, ready to strike down on the shield of his fallen opponent, whose word sword is already broken—symbolizing defeat in argument or discourse. The attire of graduation robes not only suggests the setting of academia but also the broader societal implications of education, where knowledge and words wield power and can be used to uplift or suppress. Hodgell's use of stark black and white enhances the tension and gravity of the scene, emphasizing the harshness of the conflict. The artwork may be commenting on the competitive, often cutthroat nature of academic and professional advancements, where only the strongest arguments—or the most forceful words—prevail. It serves as a reflection on how, in the quest for personal advancement or validation, individuals might overpower or overshadow their peers, turning words into weapons that can irrevocably harm relationships and reputations. Painting: "Lil David" by (24y/o) Robert Hodgell appears to be a vibrant and ethereal representation, possibly portraying a spiritual or allegorical scene with angels. This painting may be invoking themes from the biblical story of David, who was often depicted in the arts as favored by God, perhaps in a moment of divine intervention or celebration. The central figure with a crown and a harp could symbolically represent David, a figure historically celebrated as a musician and a king in biblical texts. The angels surrounding him, each in dynamic motion and with distinct expressions, might symbolize guidance, protection, or the divine joy associated with sacred music, reflecting David's role as a psalmist who soothes and communicates with the divine through his music. The use of soft, diffused colors and the fluidity of the figures give the scene a dreamlike quality, emphasizing the transcendental nature of the moment. The artwork captures a celestial celebration or a moment of divine interaction, possibly suggesting the spiritual elevation and joy associated with faith and divine providence. In the second photo, you can see "Lil David" on display above the graduate art students left to right: James Storey, Robert Hodgell, and John Wilde, all University of Wisconsin graduate art students, display their work at the Memorial Union in the 1946 "Experiment in Art" show. 👉Make sure you see the new exhibit by Lucie Eusey "Falling Sky: Abstracting the Horizon” at Trox Gallery and Gifts' Jerry Troxell Memorial Gallery during the May 3 Art Walk! 🖼 About the exhibit from Lucie: In this exhibit, I explore two key concepts. Firstly, I consider how distance creates a visual illusion of the sky “falling” into the land itself. Secondly, I reflect on the influence of civilization, where the landscape is divided into mile sections intersected by dirt roads, imbuing the perception of space with a sense of geometric order. 🎉 We are excited for Friday and all the art plus a STEAMROLLER!!! 🚜 Join us during the Art Walk on 8th Avenue and watch as 4x4 foot woodblocks are printed using a steamroller! Artists carved the boards with their own original design and on Friday, the boards will be inked by hand, placed on the street with fabric over them, and a steamroller will roll over them, pressing the fabric onto the board. 🤩 The resulting outcome is a fine art print! Prints will be on display at Preston Gallery in the Lyon County History Center and original 9"x12" hand pulled prints will also be available with a donation. Come out and support ESU’s public art students as they host their first steamroll event and enjoy art in action! 🎨 #emporiafirstfriday #EFFArtWalk #emporiafirstfridayartwalk #emporiakansas #emporiaksarts #artwalk #community #kansasartist #printmaking

Print of the Day: "Abraham Sacrificing Isaac" by Robert Hodgell is an arresting visual narrative that reinterprets a pivotal biblical story through the lens of war and conflict. Cast in a monochromatic red, the print captures the moment of sacrifice with a heightened sense of urgency and intensity. This color choice not only draws the eye but also symbolizes the blood, sacrifice, and the immediate nature of life-and-death decisions. Hodgell’s adaptation places Abraham and Isaac in a military context, possibly commenting on the sacrifices made during times of war, and the unquestioning obedience expected of soldiers. The print evokes Genesis 22:10, “And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son,” which parallels the willingness to sacrifice, paralleled in the sacrifices made by those in military service. The use of bold lines and the obvious absence of other colors reinforce the gravity of the moment, and the deliberate contrasts serve to further add to the tension and drama of the narrative. This piece powerfully combines the personal and the political, urging the viewer to consider the profound cost of duty and obedience. What do you see in this print? Print of the Day: "The Dialogue" by Robert Hodgell is a compelling piece that depicts a stark exchange between two figures: one, a preacher who symbolizes Christianity, stands with hand to mouth in an apparent gesture of shock or contemplation; the other, a creature of the world, lounges with a cigarette and martini, exuding a spirit of carefree excess. This print, likely from the 1960s, uses contrast and expressive line work to explore the tension between spiritual convictions and the enticements of the secular world. The preacher's solemn demeanor and traditional garb highlight a sense of earnest devotion, while the fantastical dragon-like figure, reveling in hedonistic pleasure, challenges this austerity with its very posture and demeanor. Through "The Dialogue," Hodgell invites viewers to reflect on the complex interplay of values and the impact of worldly distractions on spiritual life. What do you see in this print? "Revival For Sale" by Robert Hodgell: This painting presents a vivid narrative. It juxtaposes the commercialization of faith with the setting of a revival tent meeting, which is traditionally a space for spiritual awakening and religious fervor. The empty chairs inside the tent suggest a lack of attendance or perhaps a lost spiritual connection, emphasized by the 'For Sale' sign. The presence of the truck and the angels with trumpets add layers of symbolism, with the truck possibly signifying the mobility or transient nature of such meetings, while the angels could represent divine witness or a call to return to authentic spiritual experiences. Their presence here is also ironic, they are announcing a revival that no one is attending. It’s a striking commentary on the commercial aspects of religious practices, especially relevant to the cultural shifts of the 1960s-70s. Mural work: Robert Hodgell’s artistic versatility extended beyond prints to significant mural work, capturing landscapes and narratives on a grand scale. His contribution to the Wisconsin State Fair Centennial in 1948 showcased his ability to work with very large formats, a testament to his skill in composition and detail. Working on such expansive canvases allows for a sweeping portrayal of subjects, where each element contributes to a larger story being told through the artwork. His experience as an assistant to John Steuart Curry, even posthumously, speaks to Hodgell’s immersion in a world of regional and social expressionism, inheriting a legacy of capturing the American spirit. The second picture demonstrates just how grand all these murals are! Photos via: (Wisconsinhistory.org) Which Wisconsin landscape mural is your favorite? 4/28/2024, 4:42:46 PM

Print of the Day: "Lifeboat" is a striking and evocative print by Robert Hodgell, revealing a stark commentary on the disparities between the affluent and the impoverished. The image shows a family, seemingly oblivious to their privilege, indulging in excess within the safety of a lifeboat, while around them, a sea of emaciated figures reaches out in desperation. The richly detailed whirlpool, comprised of skeletal bodies, signifies the consuming nature of poverty and death. Hodgell's use of contrasting darkness and light serves to emphasize the divide between the two groups, with the wealthy cast in the safe center and the poor in the perilous deep. This print, presumably from the 1960s, resonates with the social consciousness of its time, providing a grim reflection on societal neglect and the often unseen human cost of inequality. It’s a powerful piece, calling attention to the continuous and often overlooked struggles that persist beneath the surface of society. Print of the Day: This poignant piece, which we'll call "Elephant," illustrates an elephant in the midst of a seemingly simple task—collecting hay into buckets. Crafted by Robert Hodgell in the 1960s, this print is a powerful piece of social satire, commenting on themes of entrapment and bondage. The elephant, a symbol of might and memory, is paradoxically tethered by a slender peg, a restraint it could easily break free from, suggesting the psychological chains that bind us. The black and white palette emphasizes the stark reality of the scene, with the detailed texture of the elephant’s skin adding a visceral sense of weight and presence. This image speaks volumes about the condition of being held captive by limitations that are, in truth, breakable—a resonant metaphor for societal constraints of the time, and a timeless commentary on freedom and power. Print of the Day: "The Flood" by Robert Hodgell presents a compelling visual metaphor, the image of a man in a suit overwhelmed by a flood of "words". The suit, a symbol of societal position and the normative professional world, clashes with the chaotic force of the words that engulf the figure. This powerful print likely dates back to the turbulent 1960s, a period marked by social upheaval and the weight of public discourse. Hodgell employs a sea of green strokes to represent the relentless flood, where the text itself becomes a tangible force, both creating and destroying. The man's hand, stretched upwards, grasps for salvation or perhaps a final attempt to be understood, signifying the desperate human condition amidst the overwhelming power of our own creations. This work serves as a stark reminder of the potential self-destruction in the words we wield and the conversations we engage in. What do you see in this print? Print of the Day: "Dancing Prophet" by Robert Hodgell is a vibrant piece likely created in the 1960s, capturing the biblical joy of David dancing before God. This print utilizes a dynamic array of angular shapes and lines to represent movement, reflecting the energetic spirit of the dance. Dominant hues of blues and browns infuse the artwork with an earthy yet ethereal quality, mirroring the sacred and celebratory nature of the subject. Sharp contrasts and bold strokes give life to the figure of David, whose uplifted arms and elongated form suggest a surrender to divine ecstasy. This artwork is inspired by the Bible verse 2 Samuel 6:14, which states, "And David danced before the LORD with all his might," portraying a moment of pure, spiritual elation as David honors the presence of the Lord with his exuberant dance. Hodgell’s work here is not just a visual representation but a tribute to the expression of spiritual rapture and devotion. What do you see in this print? Robert Overman Hodgell was born in Makato, Kansas in 1922. Greatly influenced by Kansas artist and Regionalist, John Steuart Curry, he attended the University of Wisconsin - Madison where Curry was hired to develop the nation's first Artist in Residence program, and promote the rural arts activities in Wisconsin. He later received his B.S. and M.S. degrees during the early 1940s from UW. While there, he also studied printmaking under Alfred Sessler - and became quite an accomplished print maker. In 1946, Hodgell became a mural assistant to Curry, including assisting him on his last mural, “Youth Helps Build a Better World”. Upon Curry's death, Hodgell actually finished executing a series of murals for Wisconsin's State Fair. From 1957 to 1959, he taught at the University of Wisconsin – Madison Extension Division. From 1961 to 1978, he taught at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida. He also taught art at the Ringling School of Art and New College and the University of South Florida, Sarasota. He also opened his own Art gallery in Florida. Hodgell’s works can be seen in many permanent collections including the Library of Congress, Miller Art Museum, Eckert College, and the Ringling Museum of Art. Hello, this is my favorite work of all time titled "Storms Coming In."There is much experimenting, mistakes, new ideas. I had a goal, but as creatives know, they don't always work as planned! A strong, light mobile type of structure, mica hanging fr handmade frame. Just sit with it, watch the light....and 2 pics of my favorite master carpenter/husband Joe. "Common Ground" opening 5/3 5-8pm, with Mary Elmusa and Becky Stevens at Leedy Voulkos Art Ctr in KC, MO. Please come out to see our work and support local artists and this fabulous gallery. #leedyvoulkosartcenter #kcartistscoalition #kcartists #kccrossroads #kccrossroadsartsdistrict #missourifiberartists #kansasartist #kansasprairie

"Obsession I" 40"x30" on heavyweight wrapped canvas. Currently showing at @hiddentrailbrewing Available through @gardencityarts This piece is all about me. Maybe about you too. Don't you have obsessive ways? I notice mine and I wonder why I have them and where they come from. I mean, this goes way back, and this particular one is my connection with circles. Yes, circles! You'll notice them in a number of my artworks and digital designs. My mom was a court reporter who always had her steno pads laying on her desk. I would fill up pages of circles on them. PAGES! I was never told I couldn't or shouldn't, so...... I'm quite okay with it and I welcome my compulsions to come out in my work. There are other hints of obsessive mark making here but I'll let you find them. Then, think about what you do that is repetitive in your life, your work. Is it an obsession.......or is it part of your style and personality? Or, does one create the other? ....................................................... #robinvstudio #abstractartworks #contemporaryabstractart #circles #kansasartist #contemporaryinteriorspaces #compulsions
