It's been a crazy two weeks of training and I fell super behind on posts. In the last week we saw first-hand how Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge is mitigating marsh and forest loss as a result of climate change-induced sea level rise and invasive species and how their Friends Group is supporting their efforts. We also saw how they fit into the multi-agency effort to tell the story of Harriet Tubman, who grew up as an enslaved person on the marsh before making multiple escapes North to free herself and ~70 others from the horrors of slavery. In the meantime, 30 professionals from 20 countries were attending the International Conservation Chiefs' Academy (ICCA) to build leadership and networking skills as they try to fight illegal wildlife trafficking around the world. That includes live specimens, parts, and pelts of anything from cacti to tigers that are protected from exploitation by federal and international law. Two of the ICCA participants were from Madagascar! Tsara be! As the agency responsible for enforcing the Endangered Species Act and managing the National Wildlife Refuge System, the Fish and Wildlife Service does a lot. It's been a lot of fun making new connections and learning what all goes on behind the scenes of this incredible (yet poorly understood) agency. Frühlingsfeier an der Freien Waldorfschule Kastellaun Die öffentliche Frühlingsfeier an unserer kleinen Schule fand am 13. April in unserem schön geschmückten Atrium statt und es gab, wie jedes Jahr, sehr gelungene und frühlingshafte Beiträge unserer SchülerInnen. Die Klassen haben jeweils Gedichte, Lieder und kleine Aufführungen mit ihren Klassen- und Fachlehrkräften vorbereitet. Kinder verschiedenster Altersstufen zeigten zudem ihr akrobatisches Können und faszinierten damit alle ZuschauerInnen. Im Anschluss gab es ein üppiges Buffet, dieses wurde von engagierten Eltern selbst zubereitet, so konnten alle Beteiligten die Zeit im Anschluss genießen mit anregenden Gesprächen und die Kinder hatten Raum zum Spielen. Ein herzliches Dankeschön an alle, die unsere Feier zu einem so schönen Ereignis haben werden lassen. What do salt marshes on the Chesapeake Bay have to do with prairies? Quite a lot, actually! Earth Day reminds us that while we live on an incredibly unique planet, one species has left its outsized, indelible mark on it. Just as nuclear testing during the Cold War left a worldwide geological marker of humanity's presence, industrialization and the enormous quantities of CO2 annually emitted into the atmosphere are leaving humanity's mark on ecosystems across the globe. While Minnesota's prairies are warming and its wetlands are experiencing unprecedented spikes in precipitation punctuated by intense droughts, coastal wetlands are being flooded and washed away while the forests behind them are dying from saltification. Midwestern farms allow soil to blow away, while coastal fields that have been productive for 100s of years are getting too salty and wet to grow crops. Some are already underwater. Global problems require global solutions. Earth Day is a great reminder that we all share more than our differences, and together we can do some incredible things, both for bad and for good. A shout-out to the president who bought more prairie than any other person ever! At $0.03 per acre ($0.70 per acre in 2023 dollars), Thomas Jefferson's Louisiana Purchase from France in 1803 was a steal, and it nearly doubled the size of the United States at the time. It contained parts of 15 modern states including Minnesota (including Big Stone National Wildlife Refuge!), Montana, Louisiana, and the Dakotas, and even parts of Canada. The purchase came as a surprise to the American negotiation team that had traveled to France with the hope of purchasing New Orleans for $15 million. Napoleon Bonaparte of France made the much larger offer in response to frustrations with Spain and a desire to make some money off of France's faltering New World exploits. While the purchase helped to ensure that France would no longer compete with the US for territory on the continent, it set the stage decades of conflict between the US and Native Americans inhabiting the area and feuled tensions between slave-holding and free states. To learn more about the purchased lands, Jefferson commissioned the Lewis and Clark Expedition. In 1804, the Corps of Discovery set out on its two year journey to explore the territory and find a path to the Pacific Ocean. The expedition was a huge success as it made first contact with ~70 tribes on behalf of the US government, explored and mapped the full extent of the Missouri River, discovered ~200 new plants and animals, and stirred up national excitement for the colonization of the new lands. If only Thomas Jefferson had also thought to protect some of his purchase from human exploitation. Alas, we'd have to wait another 100 years before a US president (Theodore Roosevelt) realized that the natural history of the US was worth preserving.
