This afternoon marked the ribbon cutting and, finally, the official Grand Opening of the renovated Sheriff's House as the Welcome Center for First State National Historical Park. 🎉 The event featured remarks from park Superintendent Josh Boles, Lt. Gov. Bethany Hall-Long, Senator Tom Carper, and Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, with a traditional Lenape prayer and blessing from Jeremy Johnson, Cultural Ed. Director for the Delaware Tribe of Indians. Several local officials were also in attendance, including Mayor Leary, who helped cut the ribbon. In his remarks, Boles gave credit to his staff and a special acknowledgment to FSNHP's first Superintendent Russ Smith, who had a seat of honor in the front row. Cave of Wonders 💰 Descend over 750ft beneath the Earth’s surface and you’ll reach @carlsbadcavernsnps, one of the world’s largest cave systems. The caves are renowned for their spectacular geological formations, including stalactites, stalagmites, columns, draperies, and flowstones. The Big Room, main chamber within the system, is the largest chamber in North America that includes a 1.25-mile trail to explore. The Caverns are also home to one of the most extensive and diverse bat colonies in the world. During the summer months, hundreds of thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats roost in the caverns. I didn’t get a chance during this visit, but can’t wait to go back and see the bats emerge to feed in the evenings! Marine National Park 🏞️ Darragh O’Brian, Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, announced a new marine national park in Kerry this week. The new park is called Páírc Náisiúnta na Mara, Ciarraí and has at its heart the lands of the Conor Pass along with other smaller sites, newly acquired by the State. The park is made up of multiple non-contiguous Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) and Special Protected Areas (SPAs) now in State ownership which have already been designated as Natura sites under the Habitats Directive, including the Blasket Islands SAC designated for harbour porpoise, and Kerry Head Shoal SAC off the mouth of the Shannon. Speaking at the announcement Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Electoral Reform, Malcolm Noonan said “With the iconic Conor Pass as the gateway, Ireland’s first Marine National Park brings mountains, blanket bog, heaths, rivers, coastal dunes, limestone reefs, sea cliffs and some of the wildest land and seascapes in the country together in celebration of nature”. While there has been much fanfare and congratulation, there is nothing new about this in terms of protection for marine and terrestrial habitats, and the many vulnerable species to be found across the sites. Officials have been at pains to stress that nothing has changed for farmers, fishers or anyone else in terms of use of the land and sea. This points towards a rebranding exercise and while the purchase by the State of the lands at the Conor Pass, the Owenmore River Catchment, Mount Brandon, and Inch Peninsula are significant, it remains to be seen how they will ultimately contribute to an increase in protection. Effective management of Natura Sites in Ireland has been poor, resulting in fines imposed last year by the European Court of Justice. The National Parks and Wildlife Service, the body with responsibility for protecting our natural heritage, has seen increases in budget and staffing in recent times. The IWDG are hopeful that this will translate into a detailed management plan, properly resourced, for the new national park. #MPA #Natura #SAC #nationalpark
