Civil War Soldiers, Gouache on cut Yupo paper on watercolor paper, 8” x 8”. I learned that a park ranger posed for these silhouettes that are sculpted in metal around the park! The limestone rocks that I painted on the figures were a prominent geological feature in this part of the battle. The Union soldiers fiercely defended their position here and the rocks provided natural cover, which gave them time to assemble at another location and turned the tide of the battle. For this series I created white silhouettes on black paper to show the juxtaposition of the violent history of the Battle of Stones River, and the peaceful nature that occupies this space now. This also refers to enslavement and freedom, manmade and natural objects, the north and south, and the unfinished painting represents the lives cut short on the battlefield, and all the unknown details that disappear with time. Devils Garden – Arches National Park - Utah Adventure waits for sightseers, hikers, and thrill-seekers in Devils Garden, one of the premier locations in the park. On this 8-mile trail, explore many arches, spires, and a large concentration of narrow rock walls called “fins.” Fins form when rainwater erodes parallel fractures caused by the uplift of salt deposits below the surface. Fins eventually erode and give way to the formation of arches like Landscape Arch, the crown jewel of Devils Garden. Landscape Arch is the longest arch in North America with a light opening of 306 feet. This awe-inspiring expanse is only 6 feet in diameter at its narrowest. Large segments of the arch came crashing down in the 1990s – proof that the park’s landscape can change dramatically in an instant. Yosemite National Park. One of the biggest parks not only in USA but also the world. Covers an area of around 759,620 acres equal to 3074 Square Kms! It's now a world heritage site. The park has some very amazing trails and also tracking routes. Sheer granite rocks and hundreds of water falls makes it enchanting to view from any location. The park has been very nicely protected and visits are only allowed after prior bookings. We visited it over two days but actually one requires one week to fully appreciate the size and diversity of this unique ecological part. One more ticked off the bucket list.
