The Ladies of VICTORY had an incredible site visit to MD Anderson on Thursday. We are so honored to be given the opportunity to take a behind the scenes tour and visit with Katy Rezvani, MD, PhD. She and her associate researchers are on the forefront of advancements in Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapies including CAR T-Cell work to help patients with advanced aggressive Lymphoma. They are also currently working with the FDA to get approval to use some of their findings on patients with glioblastoma. This is why the Ladies of VICTORY work tirelessly to raise funds. I’m struggling a bit most recently. It’s hard to find words to post because I don’t like only sharing negatively. Ellix’s counts last month have had me worried, he’s pale with dark circles and bruises. Yet platelets and hemoglobin are good. He’s got good energy and a decent appetite. It’s triggering to see signs and not have evidence because that was our reality at diagnosis. For weeks I knew and everyone told me I was wrong. Ellix’s counts were too high and his dosage was increased and I have spent every moment since that day pleading with God that was enough. That there isn’t a bigger battle ahead. That he gets to see the end of treatment and focus on the next battle. LIFE. Living life. I am grateful for every moment. For this life we have right now. But it’s not enough if he doesn’t get to see the future. On top of all this I’m having health issues and the weight of the world, past trauma, ptsd from this pediatric cancer battle and life stress I feel like I’m going to crumble. It’s so weird to live a life and smile and pretend everything is okay when you have to feel all these fears constantly. When you have to wake up with the incessant thought of loss and constant pleading for the opportunity to watch all your children grow up. Really hating the cancer life right now. The chemo Ellix received 3 days ago is setting in. His side effects have gotten worse through out this last day; jaw pain, leg pain, difficulty walking, weakness in hands and feet, severe nausea, sensitivity to smells, irritability and difficulty sleeping. We’ve spent the better part of the night on the bathroom floor due to his nausea. Prior to today the steroid pulse had increased his appetite and he was eating a lot! Which is a first. Normally during steroids he has cravings but nibbles and doesn’t eat much. Now his little sister has a fever 😭 and he’s complaining of having a sore throat. He’s currently holding the steroid that balances his cortisol and glucose because he can’t take it during the use of the stronger steroid pulse, so on top of an infection being bad due to low immune counts, it could potentially throw off his sugars due to his adrenal insufficiency. Which, like in diabetics, could result in very bad things. So far no fever which means no need to call his Oncology doctors. Hoping it stays that way. Germs don’t stay isolated long in this house because of having little ones. I’m just hoping for no fever for Ellix. Pray for us ❤️ I understand our situation could definitely be worse but it could definitely be better as well. We just want Ellix to be okay. We’re once again watching a fever climb in our little guys body😭 This morning while I was getting ready for work I noticed Ellix felt warm. Checked his temp… 99.9 I had hoped he had just been bundled up too much in blankets. Unfortunately it got higher and I had to leave work. He’s now at 99.9 again but it’s clear he’s feeling the effects of a fever and sounds miserably uncomfortable while he sleeps. I am honestly in disbelief that Ellix already has another infection or at the very least a fever of unknown origin. As of right now the plan with our team is heading to the clinic tomorrow and we’ve held both chemotherapy treatments for the night, by direction of our nurse. Unfortunately if he spikes any higher or develops any other symptoms we have to go to the local ER for evaluation. Just a week ago when we went to the ER because of Ellix having covid, I had to break my sons heart. He pleaded with me not to take him to the doctors, to let him just wait a day, to give him a break and some time. None of which I could do because of what a fever could mean to his little body. Then I had to restrain my tiny son alongside 3 other nurses while they accessed his port and he fought like I’ve never seen him fight before. While he screamed that he was scared and that it hurt so bad and that he wants to go home. He always feels betrayed after. I always feel defeated and we both always feel broken. I think back to the beginning of this diagnosis and how far he has come and how much healthier he is. Then experiences like this remind me that we don’t get to feel safe and comfortable in life anymore. That he still very much isn’t healthy. In fact quite the opposite because we have to poison his cells to make them work. Since maintenance phase began for Ellix, in January, he has had 6 known and diagnosed infections and 4 undiagnosed fever episodes. All resulted in hospitalization and chemo holds of some sort. Along with copious amounts of medications and antibiotics. The question about cancer returning does not fall short on me every single time. WE. HATE.
