‘Time of Angels & Flesh and Stone’ wow, I really love this two parter! I love that we’re seeing River again for the fort time in 2 years! It’s so weird to think that she knows that Amy is her mum at this point 😂. She was great, and funnily enough this two parter cones right after the Silence in the Library two parter in our watch order. The whole image of an Angel plot point was really cool, and Angel Bob was great, and was very creepy in a calm and casual way. This really showed just how menacing the Weeping Angels are. The scene where Any has dust in her eye is so creepy and so well done 🔥. Now, getting into ‘Flesh and Stone’, the countdown is so creepy, and I completely forgot about it. It gave me shivers, and it gave me ‘Midnight’ vibes. And the whole plot point of Any closing her eyes in a forest full of Angels was so great. I also love that the crack coming along completely overshadowed the Weeping Angels, and was something that was way more dangerous, and it really elevated the second episode. I suppose I have to address that scene at the end 😬 Amy kissing the Doctor always made me feel uncomfortable, and that hasn’t changed 😂 but other than that, it was great! Without a doubt my favourite scene in this whole two parter is the Doctors chat with Amy before he leaves, and it’s even better when you realise that it’s actually the Doctor from the future, from the end of series 5, because he has a jacket! I love it so much, and scenes like this are the reason I love Doctor Who! This was quite a long one, but it was two episodes 😂 Great episodes! DOCTOR WHO 60TH ANNIVERSARY MARATHON: Flesh And Stone Trying to evade the Weeping Angels aboard the wreck of the Byzantium, the Doctor, Amy, River and the surviving squad from the Church find themselves in the oxygen factory of the Starliner - a vast forest. With Amy having to close her eyes due to the presence of an Angel in her mind, and the Doctor detecting another crack in time and space, things get desperate as the Angels begin to flee from the crack and plan to throw the Doctor in to stabilize it due to him being a complicated space/time event... Flesh And Stone is the fast paced ending to the Angels two parter and presents a somewhat different 11th Doctor being quick to anger and quite socially unaware. Of course these are still early days in Matt Smith's performance as the Doctor, but present an intriguing alternative for the character he could've played. It's revealed too, that River is imprisoned in the Stormcage facility for killing a good man. Though no further allusions are made, it puts her in a difficult position of trust. The Doctor also discovers the crack is the result of an explosion and is linked to the 26 June 2010, or as Amy reveals, the day of her upcoming wedding to Rory. After making several passes at the Doctor in her bedroom after he saves her life, the Doctor decides to collect Rory from his stag event to deter Amy's advances! 인간 '육체(살)'에 대한 이해가 변화함에 따라 '도시문명(돌)'이 어떻게 변천해왔는지 들여다보는 사회학 서적입니다. 고대 그리스부터 현대 뉴욕에 이르기까지 방대한 시간대를 분절 없이 다루며, 도시의 모습에 영향을 끼친 정치적/사회적/종교적 요소를 포괄적으로 개입시키며 서술하기에... 어려웠네요😭 . 정신을 부여잡고 핵심만 요약하자면 다음과 같습니다. ============== - 뜨거운 몸에 깃든 말의 힘을 믿었던 고대 그리스는 부채꼴 극장과 프뉙스 언덕을 남겼고, - 육신의 한계를 뛰어넘는 제국의 영원성을 보여줘야 했던 로마는 기념비적인 건물과 도시 건설에 집착했으며, - 그리스도의 육체적 고통에 이입했던 중세 기독교 사회는 연민에 기초한 공동체를 중시했다. (단, 유대인은 배제) - 육체 메커니즘에 대한 일련의 과학적 발견, 시장주의의 득세로 근대 이후로는 자유/평등/개인주의에 차츰 힘이 실리는 중이고, 현대의 도시건축과 문화는 속도(빨리빨리), 수동성(내 일만 챙기기), 비접촉(신경 끄기)의 양태로 이를 반영한다. ============== . 이렇게 정리하고 나니 뭐가 그렇게 어려웠을까 싶네요. 나름 한 방향으로 밀고 나가는 서술이었던 것을...!! <살과 돌>이라는 제목에서 '돌'을 (현대 도시 혹은 그 속의 유형의 건축물이라고) 매우 좁게 상정하고 읽기 시작했던 것이 패인이었습니다. 서양 고대사에 과문한 것도 일조했고요. 쓰다 보니 자꾸 자기반성으로 가는데... 책 자체는 '도시문명사의 고전'이라는 타이틀에 걸맞는 양서였답니다🤗 . 사실 무관심의 기술을 연마한 현대 독자들에게 '이것보다는 더 살만한 세상이 있다'는 저자의 궁극의 외침이 얼마나 가닿을지는 (+옳게 느껴질지는) 확신할 수 없습니다. 다만, 한 분야에 정통하면 세상을 이렇게까지 확장된 시각으로 볼 수 있구나 싶어 감탄했고요, 제 안의 양심이 콕콕 찔리는 일화 몇 개가 다시금 뇌리를 스치는 것이 앞으론 좀 더 '착한 도시인'이 되어야겠다는 다짐을 했습니다. 조금 느리게, 주변도 둘러보면서, 때로는 먼저 손도 내밀고, 그렇게 말이죠. . . . 언제나처럼 공부가 되고 피가 되고 살이 되고 돌이 되는(?) 두터운북클럽 특유의 독서 경험이었습니다 (필사한 구절이 A4 앞뒤로 세 장 꽉 채운 건 안 비밀...). 인간은 고난이 있어야 지성을 발휘한다던데... 그대들은 나의 지성 자극제😇 늘 감사합니다ㅎㅎ

#20230429 #읽은책 #기록 리처드 세넷의 <살과 돌>을 읽었다. “서구 도시의 역사는 일체성의 기본 이미지를 통해 쾌락 뿐 아니라 권력을 창출하고자 했던 노력과 그 문명화의 가능성 사이에 벌어진 긴 투쟁의 기록이다…” 448p 서구문명에서 도시의 역사를 ‘살과 돌’이라는 단어로 조망하고 있는 책이다. 저자는 인간이 스스로의 육체에 대한 인식이 공간에 투영되고, 그렇게 구축된 도시환경이 인간의 육체에 되돌아 오는 관계를 들여다보고 있다. 그런 측면에서 본다면 인간과 공간의 관계사는 변증법적인 것에 가깝다. 한편 인간이 가진 신체에 대한 어떠한 ‘상(image)’은 그 자체로 당시의 통념을 반영하고 있고, 이 신체에 대한 자의식은 타자에 대한 의식, 좀더 나아가서 집단에 대한 의식으로 나아가기도 하는데, 그것이 파악되는 층위는 상호배타적인 것으로 읽힌다. 도시공간 구획이 내부의 타자를 배제하고 고립시키는 방식으로 전개되었다는 것을 이 책에서 쉽게 확인하는바, 저자가 지적하는 ‘일체성의 이미지’는 시대에 따라 양면적인 속성을 갖는 것으로 이해된다. 이는 신체와 신체를 담지하고 있는 공간의 불가분성으로서 일체성을 주장할 수도 있고, 온전한 육체로부터 파생된 균질한 규범으로부터 집단 내 타자를 규정하는 일체성을 의미할 수도 있기 때문이다. 당대의 자유로운 대도시라고 해서 베네치아의 게토가 존재하지 않겠는가. 저자의 결론에 담긴 종교적 함의는 어쩌면 일체성의 이념과 계급적 분할로의 도시공간이 끊임없이 길항하고 있다는 것을 방증하는 것으로 읽히는 듯 하다. 덧. 브뢰겔의 <이카루스의 추락>에 대한 저자의 해석이 흥미로웠다. 덧2. 프로이트의 말을 빌려 “육체적인 것은 사회학적인 것으로 인식된다“는 맥락에서 저자의 ‘사회학적’논의가 전개되는 듯 한데, 일반적인 사회학 텍스트와는 다르고 오히려 눅진한 인문학 텍스트에 가깝다는 생각. 🤔
