Coloured sketch commission ✏️ I had the pleasure of creating a witch for the tabletop RPG "The Witch Who Survived" by @studioredtree (run by @ezderu and @antonio.s.howl )! Ezd won one of the special mention of my last DTIYS and this is her prize: a free bust colored sketch! I chose to draw a Puella: "Teenage novice girl, daughter of a witch or inadvertent bearer of magic; still inexperienced and prone to impulsive feelings, her strong points are her physical energy and curiosity." Mine is an orphan of just 13 years old. In her village she is treated like a beast, an outcast, she is practically beaten up every day because they say she brings bad luck. I enjoy retellings of Greek mythology especially if they present a nuanced female perspective. Needless to say, it was a no-brainer that I picked this up when I saw it. Lies We Sing to the Sea by Sarah Underwood gives us an Ithaca that offers twelve girls to Poseidon as a sacrifice each year. Both the people and the royal family are unwilling participants in the ritual but continue to do so after hundreds of years due to their fear of the sea reclaiming everything on the island. Leto finds herself chosen as one of the twelve and catches the eye of Prince Mathias before meeting Melantho. Each of them have their own agenda but all are in agreement on one thing, the curse must be broken. I was so ready for this. It sounded epic and I have loved the Greek mythology retellings that I have read so far. However, this didn’t quite hit the mark and that was even before I found about the controversy surrounding the book. I had two main quibbles as I read. First, while I was reading, I had a sneaking suspicion that the subject matter wasn’t terribly accurate historically. The descriptions of the clothes alone didn’t sound true to the period and one description in particular just made me think of a Victorian bodice instead. And this is coming from me, plebeian with no actual study done on the topic. Also, I’d gone into this book thinking it was a retelling but this was set hundreds of years after the events in the Odyssey, so not so much a retelling but a spin-off? My second quibble was that there was so much potential in the plot for emotional damage. However, weak pacing and dropped plot lines marred the reading and resulted in a lost opportunity. There were moments of buildup here and there that certainly had potential to create big emotional moments but they tended to be alluded to briefly before being dropped. It really was frustrating because I wanted so badly for this to be good. I guess there was some emotional damage, just the wrong kind, since my poor heart was being let down time and again. The bat earrings are cute though. 9. Cassandra Cain’s second Batgirl costume (Batgirl (2000) #45). This is just one of Barbara’s old suits, so 0 points for creativity. Cass does look cute in it. 8. Cassandra Cain’s first Future State costume (Batman: Urban Legends (2021) #7). Very simple suit, but I liked that it had more bright color than Cass’ other suits. 7. Another realistic suit, which I now realize was probably inspired by Cass’ Hong Kong look. Love the shoulder pads and the addition of the hood. 3. Cassandra Cain’s second Orphan costume (Detective Comics (2016) #934). This is basically the same suit as the previous one, except that the hood was replaced with Cass’ iconic sewn-up cowl. 2. Cassandra Cain’s Black Bat costume (Batman Incorporated (2011) #6). I wish we got to see more of this suit, it looks very good. When we first opened our doors at the Gerladina Orphanage and Education Centre, on March 15th, 2007, we housed 9 orphaned and vulnerable children. We quickly found sponsors for them all and slowly our family grew … 17 years later and Gerladina Orphanage housed nearly 30 sponsored children at one point! And while some of our children have grown up and moved away, many of them still live at the orphanage while they either finish school or as they start work and save money to move out on their own. Our goal for every child is for them to achieve a full education and ultimately earn a self-sustainable life. Child sponsorship makes this possible and we are proud of our many success stories. Oh, happy day! 🥹❤️ Linda got a call about an abandoned baby pigeon stuck alone on a bridge. After rescuing him from the elements, she brought him back to her pigeon room where he was welcomed with loving wings. Among the other pigeon residents were a mated pair. Unable to be released back into the wild, they found love and a happy life together, even caring for “fake” eggs and carrying out all the motions of natural pigeon life. The happy couple who play house took in the orphaned baby right away. Taking turns feeding, grooming and warming the baby the way its own parents would. Not only is this amazing news for the orphaned pigeon who will likely survive under such loving care, but it fulfills a strong biological need for mom and dad. Pigeons live for pairing, breeding and raising young, it’s their favorite thing to do! The recent good weather has meant that we have been able to start our 2024 otter releases. 🔆 Last week we were delighted to release Ouse, Delta and Mist back into the wild. They were rescued as individual tiny cubs and we introduced them to each other, so that they could go through their rehabilitation together. Their rehabilitation process couldn't have gone better and we are so happy to see these three back in the wild where they belong. Pictured you can see Ouse with a fish, Delta coming out of their holt and Mist deciding whether to come out or not. 🦦 When we release rehabilitated otters back into the wild, we use our tried & tested release methods which include; hard release, support feeding at site, their familiar holt to give confidence, and post monitoring for as long as the animal decides it wants to stay in the release area. We let the otter(s) decide when they are ready to explore the natural world of their new home in the wild.
