Join us at Father Burke Park on Sunday, 26 May from 11am-5pm for Circus in the Park, a day of circus fun for all ages. The day will feature circus workshops in and outside of our big top tent, including mixed skills, aerial and funambulism, as well as two shows by professional clown Fraser Hooper that guarantees giggles galore. All events are free except for the funambulism workshops, which cost €5 and must be pre-booked on our website. This is a great opportunity to get involved in your community and a chance to learn about your local area, meet new people, develop new skills, and have fun too! Branar sa Scoil, a programme of performances, workshops and arts offerings for primary schools commissioned by Galway Culture Company, is in full swing across County Galway this spring term. The initiative comprises of arts programming in a number of selected primary schools, and distribution of Branar’s “Rockin’ the Classroom” music education resource to all primary schools in County Galway. Following an open call to schools with a DEIS designation, Castlegar National School, Scoil Chroí Íosa, Letterfrack National School and Gort Primary School were selected for participation. Between January and June 2024 these schools are engaging in a curated arts programme. The project supports 14 artists working across Branar sa Scoil in a programme of 71 in-person workshops and 13 performances which will reach 561 pupils by the end of the current school year. Galway Culture Company is delighted to work in partnership with @branarteatar on this very exciting project for young people. This series of workshops will take place between April and June 2024 and are led by international audience development experts, The Audience Agency. This training programme is free to attend, subsidised by Galway Culture Company. The training programme will feature five workshops, presented as a progressive series, that will enable participants to construct an audience development strategy. This programme is open to all arts and cultural organisations in Galway, and is for people who have (or could have) some responsibility for audience development at their organisation. Down between Tesco's and the road that leads to the motorway from Athenry to Galway there is a humpback bridge which is known locally at Pound Bridge in Athenry. The archaeology survey number to the bridge is GA084-024 (I would like to thank Galway Community Archaeologist Bernie Doherty for forwarding me on the number). The transcription of the archaeological survey refering to the bridge is the following; "This four-arch bridge, constructed of mortared stone, straddles the Graigueabbey River (ADMIN'S NOTE: I want to investigate this myself as there are also signs for the River Clarin which many people know that river as ADMIN END NOTE) . Continuing the archaeological survey it says: ".....It is c. 130m to the S of the site of the 'Spitle Gate', the S gateway to the medieval town of Athenry (GA084-001----). When initially visited in 1984 it was described as being in good condition: each arch was c. 2.3m wide at the base and two piers or breakwaters were visible on the upstream side. Wickerwork centring, indicating that the bridge has a medieval core, was noted in three of the arches, while the mortar bed in the fourth was in a very poor condition. The river just flowed through the latter most north-westerly arch. The bridge has been widened in more recent times, but was originally 3.25m wide. Since then the river has been widened and it now flows through the two most north-westerly arches; the other two arches are partially blocked. The uppermost part of a third pier or breakwater has been exposed by the removal of weeds and scrub around the base of the bridge (information from J. O'Sullivan 2009). Battle of Aughrim 1691 diaroma with minutes. The Battle of Aughrim 1691 Centre reopens sometime in May 2024. The Battle of Aughrim happened on 12th July 1691. At this visitor centre visitors can discover the story of three rival Kings (William of Orange, James II and Louis XIV) took hold of Ireland in their struggle for power. With approx over 45,000 soldiers gathering at Aughrim proved to be the defining battle of the Williamite War on Ireland. The centre features diorama display, audio visual, interpretive panels, artefacts from the Martin Joyce collection, self guided maps of the battle sites; costumes; photo stand in; and uniformed mannequins. During the season between May and September 2024. The centre opening hours are Tuesday - Saturday 10.30am - 4.30pm; Sundays 2pm - 5pm; and the centre is closed on Mondays. The Town House was built by John Lopdell between 1822 and 1830. It was originally known as 'River View' before it was called Athenry House. By 1865, the river Clarin with its roman-arched bridge, was brought through the estate lending added charm to the place. Dr. Henry John Wellington Leonard died there in 1893, leaving an invalid wife, and a raised family of one son and four daughters. Historian Aggie Qualter remembers her going to Athenry House 'I remember two big tennis tournaments at Town House during WWI, both within a few weeks. Judging from the crowd that attended , they may well have been the County championships. I'll never know. The gentry came from all over - in landaus, carriages, and bell-ringing pony traps. On Tuesday 28 May 1935 the Athenry Western Sack & Bag Factory was officially opened by Mr Gerald Boland TD who was Minister for Post and Telegraphs. The road that led to the building was decorated with bunting anda large crowd had come to see him with the Gardaí giving him a guard of honour under Chief Superintendent Clenton, Ballinasloe, and Garda Kelly, Athenry. The Big Launch On the platform were Mr Weir, MD of the factory, TD’s Stephen Jordan and Sean Broderick; JJ Ruane; Haley B Murtagh and C.Taylor; directors of the company, Dr C Foley; RM Burke; Tohermore, Tuam; R Collins Superintendent of the Agricultural College Athenry; Rev Mr North Bombfard, M Hession, Mayor F Carr, Newtown; Mr Bowes Daly of Dunsandle, and Dr Tom Powell . Mr Weir said he was proud and happy to see the fruits of their labour of the past eighteen months realised in the shape of hand some factory and he expressed the hope that the undertaking, though small, would help in the promotion and growth of other industries. On behalf of the directors and shareholders of the company he welcomed the Minister. Larry Lardner then read a public address of welcome from the AIDPC (Athenry Industrial Development Promotional Committee). The sugar beet factories had required one million sacks for pulp and another million for sugar, and the Government could induce the companies to give orders for the sacks to the Athenry Western Sack & Bag Factory.
