Katie in her research for her MA show had been inspired by my paintings from a painting of mine she had seen in an exhibition in Dublin. In her own words ……………………………………………………………… “Your work came to my attention during my studies and have been drawn in by the vibrant colours, patterns and your incredible use of brushstrokes and dots make up very interesting compositions. The style of your paintings strike me as a flowing, colourful narrative with nature themes bursting at the seams, it has an essence of magic and beauty. The work I’m developing as part of this test event has a strong narrative element that I feel may resonate with yourself alongside a hunt of fantasy. "I was really inspired by the history of the Triskel building and connecting that with the local environment while looking to the future," explained Brian Kenny, the video artist and projection mapping specialist behind the piece. Large Solid Bronze Ballyspellan Brooch Replica of the 9th century Ballyspellan Silver Bossed Penannular Brooch, found in Kilkenny, Ireland. Decorated in a mixture of Irish and Viking Age art styles, the original Ballyspellan brooch is one of the finest examples of a late penannular style. The type, characterised by the bosses, was current in various versions in Ireland in the late 9th century A.D. In Ireland they seem to represent the final stage of the manufacture of elaborately decorated penannular brooches. The lavish use of silver in their production is due to the relative abundance of that metal as a result of Viking commerce and fragments of these brooches have been found in early 10th century silver hoards. The Ballyspellan is on display in the Treasury room of the National Museum of Archaeology in Dublin. Its panels contain a tight composition of animal motifs which flourished in the Viking Age. On the back of the brooch appears four Irish names written in Ogham writing, and it has been suggested that they were the names of former owners of the brooch. Diameter: 80mm x 85mm. International Sculpture Day is here! This week we've been sharing some of the large-scale public artworks that have been created at NSF. Tony Cragg's 'World Events' sculpture was commissioned by the Olympic Committee to commemorate the Olympic Games, which were held in Atlanta, Georgia US in 1996. His sculpture - which used elements and constructional techniques comparable to those he employed in Our Daily Bread (1994), a commissioned piece sited in Vienna, Austria - measures 25 by 19 by 16 feet and is set atop a 7-foot-high base. To make 'World Events', Cragg dismembered and then enlarged little articulated wooden mannequins that artists learn to draw from, replicating them at seven heights ranging from 24 to 64 inches. Cragg’s patterns were cast in aluminium in Germany then shipped to Ireland, where the roughly 2,000 parts were welded together to form 130 or so genderless figures frozen in ordinary postures. These figures in turn were welded together to create the image of a person from the waist up holding a sphere in his arms. The larger figures serve to make the torso and arms, the smaller to make the head and the ball. Cragg said, "Given the introduction to the project and after visiting Atlanta, I thought it would be appropriate to make a work with figuration on the theme of a world united, a global event”. The mannequins seemed the right answer to his wish “not to personalize the figures, but still have them remain human and friendly.” Cragg’s sculpture suggests the ideas of fraternal cooperation, communication and competition that are played out in the Games. The piece was designed by Cragg, and fabricated and assembled by John McCormack, Donal Dilworth (NSF technical manager), Don Cronin (artist) and Joe Neeson (artist). 'Maee' was a turning point for when i began introducing abstract earth art into my minds eye. This style became a way I channelled the essence I felt from the natural world. I am honored to have created this sculptural table, Dyadic Flow, for a collector and their family. This table base is mild steel powder coated in Statuary Bronze, accented with 24 K gold leaf and India Ink, and sealed in a clear car paint. The Italian marble is the perfect match for this piece. The table has a large support structure between the sculptural base and the marble top to support the marble. There is a tube running from the base of the piece to the upper most form, allowing for electrical to be threaded through the work so that lights underneath the marble top will adiate down onto the form. This piece is on 5 caster wheels that have magnetic wheel covers if you do not want them seen or can be quickly and easily removed if you would like the sculpture to “float” off the ground. This is my first functional piece of sculpture and presented many questions throughout its construction. While it has kept me awake many many nights, I am happy that it all came together to create a beautiful piece for the collector.
