Predator Pt 2: Billy. Continuing our Predator (1987 Film) inspired layouts, we have our Billy Sole Kit. Pre-guerrilla ambush before he shed everything north of the belt except his flak. Unfortunately I do not have an M69 flak jacket, so we may end up updating this layout in the future. But until then: We have a salty M81 boonie, an M81 Aviation Battle Dress Uniform (ABDU) Class I flight suit top, an M1956 LCE rig, some regular M81 BDU trousers, and an M16A2 (as with the Dutch Layout, go check out @firing_device_electrical_m57 for an accurate clone build). Most all of Dutch’s team except himself, Poncho, and Dillon wore ABDU Class I tops in this film; the dead giveaway being the cigarette pocket on the left sleeve of their shirts. The ABDU Class I was the Army’s evolution of the Vietnam era OG106 two piece flight suits to the then-modern M81 Woodland. Improvements included two waist pockets like standard BDUs, two waist adjustment tabs like one-piece flightsuits, and two velcro’d ventilation openings on the outboard sides of the breast pockets. It’s also interesting to note that while the film was set in 1987 as “present day” all web gear used by the team was M1956 and not ALICE, the current standard for the US Military. Predator Pt 1: Dutch. I’m taking a break from the AMA suggestion layouts to do a short series on Predator (1987 Film) inspired layouts. Predator is one of my top 5 favorite action movies of all time and a huge part of that is due to the loadouts of each person from the main characters all the way to the extras who played guerrillas with 0.3 seconds of screen time. Here we have Major Alan “Dutch” Schaefer. Pre-Guerrilla ambush, Dutch wore an OG106 Nomex Army Aircrew Shirt, a uniform item developed during the Vietnam War specifically for helicopter door gunners to improve mobility and comfort during operations. Unfortunately Dutch shed this amazing shirt during the ambush withdrawal. The vest Dutch wore throughout the movie was a custom leather vest made specifically for the movie, probably to ensure it showed maximum Arnold muscle 💪. To avoid $300+ on a reproduction that in all reality is an impractical piece of gear, I substituted this vintage Bugle Boy Safari Vest. To finish the look, I added an M81 muscle shirt, some M81 trousers, and an M16A2 (I do not have an A1 with M203 unfortunately, but this page is mostly for the outfits anyway, so I’ll defer to @firing_device_electrical_m57 to post up a proper weapon for this layout 🤝). Today’s layout is inspired by a suggestion from last week’s AMA story. “1980s Soldier Posted on the Fulda Gap”. The Fulda Gap is a strategically important area that has been used by many great armies throughout history. But in this context it was seen as the best possible location for the Soviets to launch a surprise attack utilizing tanks. Based off many pictures of US troops stationed on guard, I’ve decided to use a PASGT helmet, a salty faded M81 BDU RAID mod, a Tactical LBV, M81 trousers, and an A2. The Tactical LBV (also called LBV-88 or M1988 LBV) was the first attempt at replacing ALICE web gear. It proved to have breathability issues and was replaced with the Enhanced Tactical LBV with mesh base and angled pouches in the mid 90s. Fun fact: the NSN is the same for the 88 and the Enhanced, so don’t buy surplus online based off NSN only. RAID Mod by @hubcityoutdoors . I picked up this @crossfirepacks DZ Rig to replace my Russian SMERSH lbe which I sold off. My initial thoughts after getting some field time with it, it's by far the most comfortable LBE I've used. It's well built and has room for most everything you would need for a patrol. Being modeled after the British PLCE style belt kit you obviously don't have the large butt pack found on Alice or SMERSH, so you have to pick and choose what you want to carry on your belt a bit more. A beautiful Woodland jacket named to a Teniente Coronel (Lieutenant Colonel) of the El Salvador Army. I believe this belonged to Lt Col Roque, who was part of SALCON 5 (UN mission to Haiti) circa 2015. Judging from the badging and jacket, I believe this is from the mid 00s time frame. Jacket appears to be made in El Salvador and I think it has been repatched for training at Bragg. I completely forgot to add a picture of the El Salvador Ejercito patch.
