It’s Indie Bookstore Day, but here’s one you won’t find in retail. Friend and neighbor @briandelaneyconnell has been invested in the importance of writing in the lives of young people for years. Formerly of Desert Island Supply Co, these days he’s focused on his eponymous School of Writing. Every year, via YAWP! (Young Alabama Writer’s Project) he publishes essays by students he works with at various schools. I was honored to be asked to design the covers for the volumes being published this year. This is the first of two books to arrive from the printer. ⚪️🔵⭐️🔴🟠 Students from the GEAR UP Jefferson County program were asked “What matters to you?” and Brian worked with them to write critical essays on their topics. As a glimpse at the table of contents here reveals, these young writers thoughtfully cover a lot of big ideas. I wanted the cover to reflect the range of topics and the grace and thoughtfulness with which they approach them. After kicking around (and not finding success with) a bunch of fake modernism I came back to one of my favorite subjects: the human hand. ⚪️🔵⭐️🔴🟠 The color dots and spark imply a variety of “things.” I chose this hand (inverted from the original orientation of the photo) because it can be read as gently gathering or releasing these many things. The back floods and overwhelms the image with these all-too-many things (a feeling familiar to anyone who’s been a teenager) yet hopefully the color also gives it the wild optimism and energy of that age. ⚪️🔵⭐️🔴🟠 I love designing spines, and this one suggested itself pretty quickly. Another detail that really brings this to life for me is the linen-textured paper stock. I wanted something that matched the softness of the image, and I wanted this book to feel special, elevated, important for all the writers. Writing and self-publishing was a crucial part of my creative growth as a teenager. To be published in a book like this would have been a dream come true, so the nice paper is a gift to my past. I received these three unbranded gold tone rings with pretty diamond stones (not real ones) that are set in them as a set from #influenster for my honest review. To be honest, I really didn't think I wouldn't like these very much, but I ended up wearing them anyway. They are not my normal style to wear as rings. But I really fell in love with them anyways. I wear them once in a while but I can only wear one at a time because they are size 7 and I only have one finger that will fit that size. They're still pretty nice details.
