We did it! Yesterday the piggies went on the ultimate field trip - they got to move to their permanent yard! To get the area ready, we had to add several boards around the perimeter to reinforce the fence. We added a gate so they will have access to a pasture. We cleaned out their barn and added new bedding. Finally, we need to install the roof that will provide a large area of shade, but we need a larger tractor for the job. So for now we put up a sail shade to give them a cool spot to nap. (<

As Dusk has gotten older, he’s become less interested in snuggling. But that’s all gone out the window this week! He has been loving the extra attention and help with shedding his hair. Over the weekend, the sheep got a special treat of visiting a lush area of grass near their yard. We had to put up some wonky temporary fences to keep them in, so the excursion didn’t last long, but everyone had so much fun tasting all the new shoots. It was hard to get adequate pics because everyone was so busy moving from spot to spot to get the best mouthfuls. I was recently thinking about when Kraemer joined our family. He was a very spunky, VERY smelly buck who was listed on Craigslist for mere dollars. He was sent with a bag of Fruit Loops. Last week Stanley also made a trip to the vet. He needed an annual exam and vaccine. I wasn’t surprised that he did amazingly well! He maintained his fan favorite status at the vet’s office too. 🥰 Only one issue came up - he’s overweight. 🤦🏻♀️It’s wild how tiny he was when he first showed up on our property. And now he has to go on a diet. No more dry food. It’s going to be a little challenging to keep him from the girls’ food in the barn. The vet suggested microchip feeders for them. Miss Savannah had quite the eventful week! We noticed she had an injury on her neck that didn’t appear to be healing on its own. Because she doesn’t let us pick her up or hold her still, we couldn’t get a good look. So she made a trip to the vet. I was a little nervous about getting her in a carrier - it’s the first time we had to do this since she’s been free here. But she did great! Everyone at the vet loved her! She let them shave part of her neck so the wounds could get cleaned out and she got a shot of antibiotics and rabies vaccine just to be safe. The wounds are healed already and she’s been busy adventuring with her sister, Marbles. When describing an animal’s personality, it’s easy to fall into the trap of basing it on how they interact with humans. Sophie does not trust humans. She’s very skittish around them. However, she couldn’t be more different around her sheep family. She’s outgoing, confident, and loving. She still stays close to her mama, but she has close friendships with the young sheep in the flock. She can get quite rowdy and playful with them. Mouse had a stressful morning yesterday. The rest of the family broke into the pasture… again (I really hate the woven wire we have and the whole line of it needs to be replaced). However, either Mouse didn’t see where the hole was or she was too big to fit, but she was left back in their yard and was VERY upset to be alone. Thankfully I saw it all go down so she was quickly reunited and the hole in the fence was patched. We’re not sure exactly when Chai was born, but we estimate that he’s about 9 months old now. He is a GREAT eater and usually pushes through the whole flock to get some of the first bites of hay. He also LOVES the ladies. He shows his spicy attitude often with them. Despite all this, he still needs his mama. Every now and then he nurses for a minute, I’m sure just for comfort rather than to drink anything. Chai found a small break in the fence leading to the sheep’s pasture, so he took his mama and friends on a little adventure yesterday. Once I got them back into their yard, I had to get innovative because I didn’t have the right materials to permanently close the hole - Christmas trees! The sheep had a few lying around (they like to use them as scratching pots now), so I piled them in front of the hole in the fence. Apple and Chai tried to wiggle their way in, but thankfully the pokey branches were no match for them. We’ve had some ugly cold days, but then last night the sun came through for a few minutes as it was setting. The sheep were all happily munching on dinner. Everyone is healthy. No emergencies.
