Tegenwoordig lijkt het soms alsof de wereld kapot is. Er is zoveel haat, zoveel angst, en er zijn zoveel problemen dat je soms niet weet waar je moet beginnen om ze op te lossen. Dit is iets waar volwassenen mee worstelen, maar ook veel kinderen krijgen mee dat er zaken niet goed lopen en dat het belangrijk is om hiervoor in actie te komen. Amanda Gorman, bekend Amerikaans spoken word-artiest schreef vorig jaar samen met illustrator Christian Robinson een prachtig prentenboek. Een boek over hoop, over in actie komen, over samenwerken en vertrouwen in de toekomst. In Ooit, Ergens, leert de hoofdpersoon dat zelfs de kleinste acties een groot positief gevolg kunnen hebben. Dat wanneer je hoop hebt, deze hoop deelt, er de mooiste dingen kunnen gebeuren. Ik heb genoten van dit prachtige hoopvolle prentenboek, een boek dat qua denkwijze precies aansluit bij de manier waarop ik in het leven wil staan, met een boodschap die ik heel graag ook aan mijn eigen kinderen mee zou willen geven. Het is een boek dat je niet alleen voor kunt lezen in de kleutergroepen (de doelgroep), maar ook kunt gebruiken als introductie voor een les(senserie) over hoop, actie ondernemen, over de wereldproblematiek en wat je hier als nietig mens in zou kunnen betekenen. AMERICAN SONNETS FOR THE APOCALYPSE, 2020– As the pandemic made it's way around the world and the response shaped our existence I struggled for ways to process what was going on. As I always do I turned to writing. This be existence needed a new form. I had just read Terrance Hayes' beautiful book, 'American Sonnets for My Past and Future Assassin.' I did more digging and found Wanda Coleman's notes in this unique form and decided this was it. I intended to write a sonnet a day for the duration of the stay at home order. But then it was extended and the Apocalypse continued—as they always do. The thirtieth sonnet was written the day before news broke regarding George Floyd. And the sonnets continued. I've currently released 60 sonnets to the world in two chapbooks length collections. As the events contine, I continue to write more. The Blue Tapes House Band vol. 3: Chase Me Before The Plague Oxbow's Eugene S. Robinson, Map 71's Lisa Jayne, @martcurlins and Blue Tapes founder David McNamee (Soft-Bodied Humans, Cut A Lonely Figure) combined to make the third Blue Tapes House Band release a towering, abstract architecture of words and drones. Similar to the new vol. 5 release, vol. 4 is in essence a long, psychedelic remix by Matt Collins of constituent words and sounds provided by the other three members. Maybe not a remix - maybe a mutation. In juxtaposition these sounds have their own purpose and intelligence far beyond the intention of any of the disparate scraps of spoken word and riffs they were initially assembled from. In about 1 month, @wesleyfrazierkeys , @d.wil_son , @kingkhy611 , @robindannybobo and I are heading to Pompano Beach, FL to compete on one the country’s largest poetry competitions in the country. I performed my new poem, ‘Scribble,’ on the stage of @bekhaufbaatein. It is a dialogue between two people, where one is oblivious to the fact that he is being disrespectful and the impact his choices have on the other person. The coach in me will come up with ways to change the narrative, find a better way out, or even have three ways of dealing with a dismissive person. However, the budding artist in me knows that we need to voice discomfort, injustice, and non-inclusive norms. Call a spade a spade. Make enough noise so that it is not acceptable to bully or dismiss people from a position of power and privilege. My acting coach, @rupesh_tillu , once said, "Use your art to disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed." Thank you, @smitabharti_, @Sbox, @vedakunba, and @publicisgroupe , for this wonderful platform. And I can’t thank my fabulous, loving, supportive, and courageous friends enough for patiently holding space for all my messy, imperfect, overworked, and work-in-progress versions. It's been a pleasure to work with Wanda and David Garner to produce this film for their upcoming exhibit: Pantomime/Behind the Mask. 'Invisible Me' will get its very first screening at @orielbrondanw, May 11th. From thereon, it will travel nationwide as Wanda and David take their exhibit across Wales. More on their exhibit: "Portmeirion Pottery created a series of ceramics in the 1960s entitled, 'Pantomime'. This was our initial inspiration leading us to consider cross-dressing in pantos and from there, we started to peel back the layers that create our individual identities.
