If you didn't go for a mantis shrimp, you would miss out on probably the craziest day of your life (shame on you). Let me make you familiar with these guys. Each eye moves completely independently, so you can watch TV while you cook dinner. While you have 1 pupil and 3 types of color receptors in each eye, they have 3 (sort of) pupils and 12 receptors. On top of that, besides visible light, they can also see ultraviolet and polarized light. Now, how does that translate into what they are actually seeing? I have absolutely no clue, but it sounds like a lot of fun (and headaches). When the hunter becomes the hunted! Puffer fish have a very feisty appetite, and can bite through pretty much anything. Indeed, their family is called Tetraodontidae, standing for the 4 large sharp teeth located at the front of their mouths. However, they can’t expect a meal without a fight... I'm sure this guy regretted as soon as he went down to get the crab... the little guy got hold of both sides of his face and was not letting go. I chased them around for a while and the poor fish was really struggling... In the end, the crab used an old trick among arthropods: letting go of one of its limbs. Pelagic Thresher Shark (Alopias pelagicus )⬇️ Thresher sharks are found in temperate waters around the world; range from Newfoundland to Cuba to Africa. They are also highly migratory and will cross whole oceans in search of high food abundance. There are 3 species of thresher shark: - Pelagic thresher - Common thresher - Bigeye thresher Their most noticeable feature is that the top lobe of their caudal fin is unusually long, measures half the length of their body. The threshers use this whip like tail to herd and stun (by creating shock waves) their prey, which mainly consists of small fish. Unlike most other sharks, thresher sharks also have a unique adaptation called regional endothermy. This allows them to regulate their body temperature, keeping it above that of the surrounding water in certain areas. This year has been quite a wild ride for me. I've had the privilege of exploring the coral reefs of West Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific. However, I always felt like I needed more time. Wildlife photography is not about just shooting beautiful creatures and finding the right angle. It's about understanding the ecosystem, the interactions, the behaviors, and the unnoticed details. I am currently doing my master's thesis on @himb_soest , in Hawai'i, and I feel like my free time here will finally be enough for me to immerse myself in the nature of the reef. These are just some close-up shots of corals and anemones around here - the type of shot you really don't need much understanding to get. Pretty much point and shoot. But I am now starting to recognize the patterns around here and how the reef works. Every time I go in the water, I learn something new, I have new stories to tell. Paciente de 70 anos com sequela de AVE sofreu queda da própria altura em 26/06/23 e procurou a emergência de hospital público, onde diagnosticou-se fratura diafisaria de úmero esquerdo e, segundo relatos, optou-se por tratamento conservador com gesso axilopalmar. Um mês depois, não adaptada ao tratamento, buscou nova unidade médica em Itaguaí, sendo optado por internar a doente, visando cirurgia. Transferida a nossa instituição, hoje, com mais de 6 semanas de evolução, realizamos a cirurgia. Havendo pouca mobilidade no foco da lesão, além da própria limitação de movimento do MSE em razão da história patológica pregressa, acreditamos que a osteossíntese minimamente invasiva descrita por Belangero e Livani não seria uma boa opção para o caso. "PARECE FÁCIL, MAS É DIFÍCIL. UM BELO DIA, VOCÊ VAI APRENDER". A fratura subtrocanterica é mais uma daquela série de lesões que o jovem cirurgião subestima; acha que basta por o paciente em mesa de tração ortopédica e colocar o implante (seja haste ou DCS) e, por isso, acaba tendo uma redução e um resultado que deixam a desejar. Há poucos dias, vi uma publicação do @reconstrucao.ossea (ex-colega de residência no HMMC) e achei genial a solução que ele deu para a medialização excessiva da diafise femoral: um poller screw! Como eu nunca pensei nisso antes? Neste caso que eu trago, tínhamos uma paciente de 90 anos, que sofreu queda da própria altura em 08/07/23 em Araruama e apenas duas semanas depois foi transferida para nossa instituição. Por questões clínicas, só foi possível a cirurgia em 04/08/23 e, mesmo assim, com muito convencimento a equipe de anestesia ("tá saturando mal", "hematocrito tá mais ou menos", "Paciente tá devendo, não pode sangrar"). Postergar mais ainda a cirurgia pode causar mais danos clínicos; se a paciente tem condições, é hora de operar. Contudo, para esta paciente, redução aberta não era opção. Mesmo com auxílio da mesa de tração e mantendo o MIE bem aduzido, a diafise seguia medializada. Decidimos então pela colocação de um pino de Schanz na diafise e tração lateral da coxa, assim como a opção por fazer o ponto de entrada discretamente lateralizado. Desta forma, conseguimos restaurar o arco de Shenton e Dra. Ana Carolina (R3) fez o implante da HIMB, rápido, minimamente sangrativo. Agora, é colocar a paciente de pé e deambulando o mais breve possível. Mālama Maunalua and the Coral Resilience Lab at the Hawaiʻi Institute of Marine Biology are co-hosting the 2nd Annual Tree to Sea Camp for middle school students from March 13th-17th! We are looking for volunteers to help with capturing photo and video content, posting on social media, creating and developing ArcGIS Story Maps for each day of camp, and other general camp counselor duties. Once in a lifetime kind of experience. 🐋 ⚠️ Disclaimer: We were on our way to collect a tag from Molokai when we ran into some traffic on the water, whales were popping up around us so we slow down and cut the engines waiting for a safe moment to keep moving. All of a sudden this whale swims under our boat out of nowhere, decides that he wants to check us out for a few minutes and sets himself directly under our boat. At that point all we could do is appreciate the beauty of the moment, and wait for the whale to be done checking us out. He stayed for a couple minutes, rubbed his tubercles on our hull, maybe got rid of a few barnacles and then decided it was time to let us get back to work. Once we knew he was a safe distance away, we turned the engines back on and safely made our way over to get that tag. Truly humbled. We never went out looking for an experience like this, but I'm glad it happened. What a wonderful world we live in. Of all the species I’ve seen and studied, spinner dolphin calves might be the cutest. I’m not sure if it’s their goofy long rostrums, or antics, or poorly executed spins, but they’re always such a joy. I have only a couple more surveys left for my Waiʻanae Coast project. The ETH Board has now put forward the relevant plan for the forthcoming Swiss Roadmap for Research Infrastructures 2023. 🔆 Project HIMB will drastically increase the muon rates available for research – the sections are coloured green in the graphic. 💉Project TATTOOS will offer a new production facility for more, and better, radiopharmaceuticals for personalised cancer therapy - the new sections are shaded dark blue in the graphic. Together, HIMB and TATTOOS form the upgrade project named IMPACT “Isotope and Muon Production using Advanced Cyclotron and Target technologies”. This #FieldworkFriday I'm sharing some photos of our sponge toilets 🚽 Sponges take up a lot of dissolved nutrients that other animals can't use & make new cells out of them. Old cells are then replaced so that the sponge stays young. The old cells are pooped out & can be eaten by crabs, worms, & small fish. This ingenious recycling mechanism was shown to be crucial in the Caribbean & in deep-sea environments, but how is it in the Pacific? To test this @lotte_thieme & @ak.tonirileyz Build these sponge toilets & quantified the poop production by cryptic Hawaiian sponges.
