This is one of the largest sea grass beds in the UK and is home to many species, like seahorses, pipefish and scallops. It was 2020 when I saw for the first time pilot whales (aka Globicephala melas) in the Mediterranean Sea, during my insternship at Tethys Research Institute. In the expansive Mediterranean Sea, the presence of pilot whales (Globicephala melas) represents a critical aspect of marine biodiversity. These cetaceans, known for their complex social structures and echolocation capabilities, navigate the regionโs waters, facing numerous anthropogenic threats. Sanctuaries like Pegalos serve as essential habitats for these highly social mammals, mitigating human-induced disturbances such as noise pollution and habitat degradation. Through ongoing research and monitoring efforts, scientists strive to understand the ecological dynamics of pilot whale populations and their interactions with the marine environment. Understanding why some people trust scientists more than others is a key factor in solving social problems with science. However little was known about the trust levels across the diverse ranges of scientific fields and perspectives. Researchers from the University of Amsterdam investigated trust in scientists across 45 fields. In their study, involving 2,780 participants from the United States, social psychologists from the University of Amsterdam shed light on the factors shaping trust in 45 different types of scientists, from agronomists to zoologists. Christina (@ccthesea / @ccthesea_photo ) is an ocean-oriented woman who has always been drawn to the sea. She has a BSc in Wildlife biology with a Conservation and Management emphasis and a Scientific SCUBA diving minor from California Polytechnic University Humboldt. She focused her work on ocean exploration, monitoring, and education, with her undergraduate thesis specifically investigating the overgrowth of Purple sea urchins in Northern California's kelp forest ecosystems. Collecting hundreds of urchins on SCUBA, she assessed their reproductive conditions, gut contents, and test diameters in various habitat types. The study aimed to determine correlations between habitat type and sea urchin gonad conditions, with the hope of finding applications for purple sea urchin gonad (uni) in local commercial fisheries. Christina has dedicated herself to various volunteering roles, including assisting in scientific diving courses and teaching diving in challenging conditions at CalPoly Humboldt's Scientific Diving program. She has volunteered with ReefCheck California by collecting citizen science data to monitor kelp forest and rocky reef ecosystems. She also volunteered with the Cayman Islands Department of Environment sea turtle monitoring program, where she monitored nesting activity, excavated nests, and educated tourists about sea turtle conservation. She holds a captain's license, ensuring safety while sharing the ocean's wonders. Her role involves significant responsibility and a lasting impact on ocean conservation. Through safe boating practices, debris collection, and wildlife protection, she emphasizes the importance of ocean stewardship. Overall her greatest takeaway for future women in ocean sciences is to stay open minded about their own journey. There are countless ways to make a positive impact on our oceans, take every opportunity to learn and share. S O M E T H I N G F I S H Y All sharks are fish, but not all fish are sharks ... so what is a fish? Now we've all seen fish - whether at the fish and chip shop or, if you are a marine scientist like me, you love to swim with all fish big and small whenever you get the chance. But what makes a fish, well, a fish? There is a definition (scientists LOVE a definition), a fish must have: ๐ primitive spine ๐ head and skull ๐ gills throughout life ๐ fingerless fin-shaped limbs Broadly, we have 3 types of fish alive today, jawless, bony and cartilaginous ... Primitive jawless fish (like lamprey and hagfish): ๐ lack jaws, paired fins and scales ๐ suction feed ๐ have rows of teeth ๐ have a round muscular mouth ๐ have long, cylindrical bodies Bony fish - most fish are in this group, think clownfish and tuna, with: โ a skeleton at least partially bone โ a swim bladder โ maneuverable fins โ protrusible jaws ๐ฆ And sharks? Yep, sharks are fish - they fulfil the criteria. Sharks are the third type - cartilaginous fish - as their 'bones' are made of cartilage. So now you know! The symposium was largely a snapshot of the Australian governmentโs Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program, but as that program enters the first phase of a transition to deployment, we took the opportunity to present the @reef_restoration_foundation Resilience & Recovery program. Our program is designed to produce billions of additional coral larvae every year.
