The Abstract Painting Master-Hsiao Chin A rarely seen display of Hsiao Chin’s formative years is presented by 3812 Gallery at this year‘s Taipei Dangdai, reflecting his pivotal contributions to modern art in East Asia and beyond. As a founding member of the Ton Fan Art Group in 1955, Hsiao Chin integrated traditional Eastern aesthetics with Western modernism. Prominent among these works are Chinese Opera Characters 2 (1956) and “Discover” (1961), pieces that exemplify the fusion of cultural aesthetics. In 1961, Hsiao Chin moved to Milan and co-founded the Movimento Punto with Antonio Calderara and Azuma Kenjiro. Both artists were notable in the 1960s art scene, with Calderara featured in documenta and Kenjiro in MOMA New York, highlighting the movement’s international prominence. The evolution of Movimento Punto is showcased through masterpieces like Dancing Light 14 (1963-64) and Universal Vibration (1965), marking the peak of this artistic period. The display also includes later works such as The Highest Goodness is Like that of Water (2000) and Great Aspect (2022), which delve into Hsiao’s investigations into the cosmos and his lasting influence on abstract expressionism and the development of a transcultural modernist dialogue. Quick day trip to Taipei to check out an exhibition: Fifth Moon & Ton Fan at the National Museum of History where @alisanfinearts loaned an important work by Chu Ko, a central figure in the modern art movement in Taiwan. Chu Ko is known for his image of the unwinding knot. His work is featured on the cover of Michael Sullivan’s definitive monograph Arts and Artists of Twentieth-Century China (by University of California Press, 1996), in which Sullivan describes Chu as “one of the Taiwanese artists who has given new meaning to the term wenrenhua [literati painting].” The exhibition explores the development of Modern Art in Taiwan. Other @alisanfinearts artists included Chuang Che who is a member of the Fifth Moon Group and Hsiao Chin, an important member of the Ton Fan group. Exhibition continues until April 28th.
