What is a Will? Well, there are two different types in NZ, a regular, run of the mill Will, and what they call a Living Will. A regular Will is a legal document that can help your final wishes be honoured when it comes to: - Family Care (children under 18 and who will care for them) - Gifts & Donations (mums favourite china set or a donation to charity) - Asset & Property Distribution (who gets what and how much) - Pets (where you want your fur babies to go) - Special Funeral Requests (what music to play, what flowers you want, a guest list maybe and what you want to have happen to your body) A Living Will is another legal document that can help others understand what your final wishes are if you’re still physically alive but not of sound mind, in a coma, on life support, have an injury that impairs your ability to make any big, life or death decisions. Who needs a Will? Probably everyone who wants to make sure their choices are honoured. What are the options? In NZ apparently there are three: - A Lawyer can draw one up for you - A Professional Trustee Company can manage one for you - DYI Kits They all have their pros and cons and varying degrees of costs involved. With a Lawyer and Professional Trustee Company things will be a bit more legit and should go pretty smoothly, however DYI Kits can be great for sharing your wishes, but can be subject to various legal holes if not filled in and processed correctly. In summary, at the end of the day, just having your ideas and wishes written down somewhere will definitely help, also, making sure you have a couple of people you trust to have copies of these documents will make things easier for your family, partner or friends to execute when you do pass. A frequently asked question I get is where do I get all these dead things? Well I can assure you - there has never been an animal killed for the soul purpose of my art. Besides sourcing things myself, I work with a variety of people like farmers & ranchers, hunters & trappers, vet clinics, breeders, butchers, taxidermists and other animal enthusiasts to secure sustainable, ethical and responsibly harvested animals! These little babies are a bittersweet example. Both these goats were stillborn - they never knew more than their mother’s heartbeats and warmth. This is a common occurrence in any branch of animal husbandry and of course the wild - it makes it no less ambivalent These precious babies are going to be processed and preserved in a few different ways. While I know this isn’t for everyone I am glad to provide the services I do (be it art, hide tanning, euro mounts etc) for those that are interested! While on a college campus a couple evenings ago, a woman was sitting in the student union lobby waiting for her daughter and started small talk with me about the baby (he was running around being a crazy extrovert). She said “I had a my first one at 39, I’m waiting on the daughter I had at 41, and I had twins at 43!” Wanting to learn from those before me, I asked “what’s been the best thing about being an older parent?” She said “I think I appreciated it way more than if I was younger.” Her daughter walked up, she flashed us a smile and they were on their way. Then I had the realization that I could be that woman in 20 years, visiting my kid at college, watching a toddler run around the lobby, missing those days…. Embracing every phase to the fullest. This one is full of walking, sign language (his fave signs are for outside and cheese), people-watching, taking turns at dinner, realizing how many strangers love kids, early bedtimes, showing off the old stomping grounds of college, and realizing that everyone’s days are numbered…and today matters most.
