@treytarrant has been doing landscaping projects for Rojo for more than ten years. Last April he planted the native plants that I got from @ruffnermt sale in our metal planters and they came back looking great this year! This past fall he planted oak leaf hydrangeas, Virginia Sweetspire, sweetshrub, and winterberry by our zen garden. Yesterday he planted narrowleaf blue-eyed grass and violets from this year’s Ruffner sale by the driveway with more additions coming. I am excited to be growing plants that help support the pollinators and birds of Highland Park and happy to have Trey there to make it happen! #perlesaerie For those who kick off Lent with Ash Wednesday tomorrow, and are celebrating Valentine’s Day today on Fat Tuesday (aka Mardi Gras), here’s a little history lesson. 💕 Although there are several variations, including the ancient Roman celebration of Lupercalia, an ancient fertility festival, this is the one that endures: On Valentine’s day, many Romans were converting to Christianity, but the Emperor Claudius II was a pagan. He believed that Roman soldiers should be completely devoted to Rome and therefore passed a law preventing them from marrying. St. Valentine began to marry these soldiers in secret Christian ceremonies and this was the beginning of his reputation for believing in the importance of love. Eventually, Valentine was jailed for his crimes against Claudius. While imprisoned, Valentine cared for his fellow prisoners and also his jailor’s blind daughter. Legend has it that Valentine cured the girl’s blindness and that his final act before being executed was to write her a love message signed ‘from your Valentine’. It’s all in the second level til 6 today and noon til 6 Sunday. Had an interesting chat with Donna Winters @taylor_leanne__ who is founder of a line of Natural Organic Skincare products. She gave me a small bag of samples which I’m looking to trying. Picked up Chinese from @manchuwok_ for dinner to kick off The Chinese year of the Dragon. Home now. And. Yay. A little mind candy in my mailbox: Bon Appétit and Town & Country magazines. A cloudy but otherwise lovely day. My doors windows and balcony door open just waiting for the predicted rain. They’re busily taking orders for Valentine’s Day. But I spied these exotic looking miniature succulents. As if I need more plants. Oh, well as vices not a bad one. Truth is I’ve got an early case of spring fever, but it’s too soon to start my vegetable potted garden. Remembering the Blizzard of March 1993, I always wait til end of March to plant.
