A great day managing to do both Geal-Charn and A' Mharchonaic. The whisky front and centre is a @highlandparkofficial Dragon Legend, love the bottle design and I am a big fan of this one. Nose: smoky, sweet Palate: smoky, toffee, fruity Finish: long, initially strong but becomes smooth The smell could instantly take me anywhere with a big log burning fire. It's rich, comfy, if you like a peaty whisky you should try this one out. The palate pairs a nice sweet sensation with the smokiness, and the finish can hit hard, but it's nice and long and soothes on its way down. Sharp Edge looking otherworldly at sunrise 😍 Formerly known as Razor Edge, Sharp Edge is perhaps second in notoriety only to Striding Edge, when it comes to Lakeland grade 1 scrambles. Dramatic in nature, Alfred Wainwright described its appearance as “sufficient to make a beholder about to tackle it forget all worries, even a raging toothache”. The sheer volume of boots since AW illustrated the arête, has done much to blunt the edge but this has not done much to make the route easier! About halfway, you’ll reach a small slab of smooth rock known as “Bad Step”, which has caused a number of fatalities over the years. Go slowly here and, if possible, buddy up. The (old) Douglas Hotel, Brodick, Arran. Both locals and tourists alike have fond memories of time spent at The Douglas Hotel, which has played host to generations of guests over the years. It originally provided accommodation for acquaintances of the Duke of Hamilton, the laird of Brodick Castle. And later, it was the base for prospective Submarine Commanding Officers while completing their rigorous training on the Royal Navy’s gruelling Perisher Course. The original two and a half storey residence was built in 1782 and is typical of a sizeable dwelling from that period. It later became the local doctor’s home and medical practice up until 1852 when it was converted into a hotel. A red sandstone (quarried on Arran) and slate-roofed extension was then added to the front of the original house in 1858 and the grounds were landscaped. The first manager of the hotel, a successful hotelier by the name of Peter Macdonald, was brought to the island from Glasgow by the Marquis of Douglas, and he became a well-respected member of the community. This coincided with the removal of the island’s ferry port from below Brodick Castle at the other side of Brodick Bay to its current location on the pier, so encouraging a brisk tourist trade. This week for the first time in a while I was part of an all women team working with an all girls school. I'm now very used to being in all women groups and working with folks from all difficult backgrounds and religions. There were some things that struck me. -😢 some of the women instructors found it unusual and were pleased to be in an all women's team. As I've now gotten so used to being surrounded by strong women I found that really sad to hear in a way. 🥅 the chat was different in the sense there was less chat about goal oriented subjects (qualifications & achievement) - the chat was unconsciously (it seemed) about how to be inclusive or topics around it ❤️ it felt (my perspective) that it was more relaxed, calm, chilled 🌎 Its just simply nice to not be the only women\minority and therefore there was more understanding of each other's perspective 😱 women I find are incredibly pragmatic and get on with it - I sometimes find the more male dominated environments can be super bitchy and moany murtles 🐆 A great range of ages which I think is super important, we need all types of diversity to bring a wealth of knowledge, life experience and role models to people. Comment if you've noticed any differences? Would love to read from other industries tooo To note: I've always worked in mainly all male teams as have most women in the outdoors. Ben Vane, 109/ 282 (II) 🏔️🏴 (23/4/24) • 40th birthday Munro hike, on the first solo Munro I ever tried in 2018. Back then, I aborted in mist & snow, then bagged a month later in heavy rain. This time, with a ton more experience, Ben Vane felt fairly comfortable, & it was ideal conditions on a milestone day: Ben Lomond looking spectacular. My 1st Munro of 2024 but 415th on the road to 1000 🥾 • After completing 75 HARD, @trainedbycs has urged me to train through summer for a photo shoot. I’ve said no to a gym one - it’s not for me - but my compromise, is on a mountain. So with its ledges, & views down Loch Lomond, Ben Vane could be the one this September! A truely memorable trip to Nephin Mountain 💫 . . This weekend trip had many laughs, stories from days gone by, coupled with great company and of course, a few pints 🍻 . . Sunday morning started with a steep pull up the North side of Nephin. There was hardly a cloud in the sky, sun blazing down on our bare arms and necks, the sound of dry and loose quartzite underneath our feet, heavy breathing and the odd voice from far away. . . Only 15 minutes off the summit did Nephin ease the gradient and let us really appreciate the spectacular sweeping vistas. We had a relaxing lunch within a warm stone shelter South of the summit trig pillar, gathered ourselves together and made our way down to the South ridge.
