Using the iNaturalist app as a tool, the City Nature Challenge encourages us to explore and document the biodiversity right where we live while producing reams of data useful for science and conservation. Our urban streams are very sick. . I don’t mean sick 🤙🏽 … I mean sick 🤒 . We’ve essentially taken beautiful meandering forest streams and turned them into drainage ditches. . Not only are they filled with trash and invasive species, their banks are scoured and their waters are murky. . The source to stream conference I went to in March reminded me about why I started AVESI in the first place: to help improve watershed health. . We’ve made meaningful improvements at a lot of residential properties and we’ll continue to expand on that with more awesome rainscaping projects. . But I’ve been going straight to the source lately and it’s really floored me how sick our urban streams are. . More to come.
