We knew Nakashima made these chairs at Sakura Manufacturing in Japan and at New Hope in the U.S., but NID provided the design to the National Institute of Design in India, and it was made there in the I did not know that they were made in India in the 1960s and 1970s. It has a vintage look, almost black and shiny, and the grain of the wood is not too pronounced, so it strangely matches the taste of any age. The shelves have a very simple and minimalist design, and the aluminum material gives them a sharp impression. The sharpness of the shelves is accentuated by matching them with vintage wooden chairs and post-modern and mid-century black furniture that can be leased in the studio, creating a harmony and combination of different materials. Sideboard Cansado Designer Charlotte Perriand Circa 1960’s / Africa/ Vintage シャルロットペリアンが西アフリカモーリタニアの鉱山都市、シテ カンサドの住居や宿泊施設の為にデザインしたサイドボードです。 ペリアンはフランス植民地下の1950年代に政府の要請で現地の労働者やその家族の為に住宅や公共施設、そこで使われる生活の為の家具を設計、デザインしました。現地の気候や素材、そこで住む人々の為にデザインされたこれらの家具は現代のデザインとは違った温かみを感じます。 本来は白と黒の扉なのですが、このサイドボードの扉は黒と黒になっていて、主張がありながらも他の家具やスタイルにもよく馴染みます。 国内ではかなり希少な家具ですので、是非お問い合わせ下さい。名古屋では特に希少なのでスタイリングでお使い頂けましたら幸いです。 This sideboard was designed by Charlotte Perriand for housing and accommodation in the mining town of Cité Kansad in Mauritania, West Africa. In the 1950s, during the French colonial period, Perriand designed and built houses, public facilities, and furniture for the local workers and their families at the request of the government. Designed for the local climate and materials, and for the people who lived there, these pieces of furniture have a warmth that is different from contemporary designs. Originally black and white, the doors of this sideboard are black and black, which makes a statement but blends well with other furniture and styles. This furniture is quite rare in Japan, so please contact us for more information. Grass Seated Bench Designer George Nakashima Circa 1960’s / India/ Vintage インドのAhmedabadにあるデザイン研究所、 NID (National Institute of Design)の創設者の1人であるGira Sarabhaiに招待され、現地に家具図面と製作権を残し、1970年代中期頃までインドの材料、現地の職人によって 研究所の木材工房でジョージナカシマの家具が作られていたそうです。スタジオに1960年代にインドで作られたヴィンテージのベンチを追加しました。1950年代にインドのチャンディガールで作られていたピエールジャンヌレの家具のように、このベンチにはインドの政府機関、HUDCO (Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited) から放出されたもので、それを裏付けるレターが残っています。ジャンヌレにはお馴染みのレターですが、ジョージナカシマのものでレターが入っている物は稀でかなり貴重かと思います。 国内ではかなり希少な家具ですので、是非お問い合わせ下さい。名古屋では特に希少なのでスタイリングでお使い頂けましたら幸いです。 Gira Sarabhai, one of the founders of the National Institute of Design (NID) in Ahmedabad, India, was invited by the institute and left the drawings and production rights of the furniture there. The furniture was made in the workshop with Indian materials and local craftsmen until the mid-1970s. We have added to our Terminal964Studio&Gallery a vintage bench made in India in the 1960s by George Nakashima, and like Pierre Jeanneret furniture made in Chandigarh, India in the 1950s, this bench was made by an Indian government agency, HUDCO (Housing and Urban Development Corporation), It was released by HUDCO (Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited) and has a letter to back it up. The letter is familiar to Jeanneret, but it is rare to find a George Nakashima piece with the letter and we think it is quite valuable. This is a very rare piece of furniture in Japan, so please contact us for more information. Grass Seated Chair Designer George Nakashima Circa 1960’s / India/ Vintage Terminal964Studio&Galleryに新しくジョージナカシマの1960年代にインドで作られたローズウッドのグラスシートチェアのヴィンテージを追加しました。ナカシマは日本の桜製作所で作られているもの、アメリカのニューホープで作られているものは知っていたのですが、NIDインドの国立デザイン研究所にデザインを提供し、現地 で1960年代から70年代に作られていた事は最近まで知りませんでした。ヴィンテージならではの風合いで黒に近く、艶があり、温かみがありながらも木製家具の雰囲気とは違い、不思議とどの年代のテイストともマッチします。名古屋はもちろんですが、国内でリース出来る所は他に無いと思いますので、是非お問合せ下さい。 New to the Terminal964Studio&Gallery is a vintage rosewood glass seat chair made in India in the 1960s by George Nakashima. We knew Nakashima made these chairs at Sakura Manufacturing in Japan and at New Hope in the U.S., but NID provided the design to the National Institute of Design in India, and it was made there in the I did not know that they were made in India in the 1960s and 1970s. It has a vintage look, almost black and shiny, and the grain of the wood is not too pronounced, so it strangely matches the taste of any age. Tayama Studio opened up part of their new satellite workshop at @sunaba.official to us where we were shown the kettle molds and tools up-close and observed craftsmen Kaito Nagasaka (left) and Koya Miyata (right) polishing some freshly-cast Akai Ringo kettles. Nambu Ironware is a 400-year-old traditional craft from the former Nambu Domain (encompassing present-day Morioka), and is recognized as some of the finest ironware in the world. The molds for these kettles, made of sand and clay, require an expert hand to craft. Molten iron is poured into the narrow space between the inner and outer molds, forming the shape of the kettle. The small tools you can see Takahiro Tayama showing us (photo 2) are used to impress delicate patterns into the mold. These impressions have to be made quickly and carefully before the sand/clay hardens. After the molten iron has cooled and hardened, the kettles are polished. You can see polishing work being done in the first photo. After polishing, the kettles will be heated to about 250 degrees Celsius, coated with urushi lacquer, and given a final coating called “ohaguro” made of a mixture of iron acetate and tea. Tayama-san plans to open the Nambu Ironware workshop area at SUNABA to the public on a more regular basis in the future, so people can learn more about this incredible craft in a more interactive way. スタジオ一番奥の壁、左右の壁も白く光がとても綺麗に回ります。ミニマムでモダンな空間にCharles ＆ Ray Eamesがデザインしたラウンジチェア&オッドマン、Pierre Jeanneretがインドのチャンディガールの為にデザインしたオフィスチェア、そしてGeorge NakashimaがデザインしたBroglen Stool。テイストや国も違うアイテムですが、1950年代前後にデザインされたモダンな家具をスタジオにてリース可能です。今後ポストモダンの家具、現代の作家の家具等入荷予定です。 The backmost wall of the studio, as well as the walls on either side, are white, and the light spins very beautifully. 昨年末名古屋の @cont_sheepstore での個展にて愛知県を拠点に活動されてる木工作家の市川岳人さん @takehitoichikawa の吊り下げ燭台を購入させて頂き、スタジオに設置しました。 Parisのブルス・ド・コメルスでみた蝋燭で作られた彫刻が溶け落ちて変化していく作品のようにキャンドルを灯して床に垂れて溜まっていくような、そんな使い方もいずれ試せたらと思います。 At the end of last year, I purchased a hanging candelabra by Takehito Ichikawa, a woodworker based in Aichi Prefecture, at his solo exhibition at Cont in Nagoya, and installed it in my studio.
