Medicine Hat Must Stop: @jj_kitchen_medicine_hat ✨ In historic downtown Medicine Hat, Southern Alberta, make a stop into Jj Kitchen, a very sweet family-owned Korean restaurant with a delicious homemade menu featuring pork, beef or chicken cupbap (in a cup) and jipbap (like a bento 🍱) plus a perfect tuna triangle gimbap (Korean onigiri! 🍙), Korean corn dogs and weekly rotating Korean specialties, Jj Kitchen is so lovely I selfishly ate here twice in three days. 🥹🤤😋 Owners Jane and Brian moved to Medicine Hat five years ago from Seoul, Korea 🇰🇷 with their three young kids, looking for a quieter, roomier, slower paced small city life which they definitely found here. 💛 The couple started selling at the Medicine Hat Farmers’ Market shortly after they arrived in The Hat and their food was so wildly popular it prompted the opening of their physical restaurant space in downtown in 2022. Mom and dad go to Niagara Falls 💦 for our first getaway without baby Benjimin! 🥹 It was tons of fun but we sure missed our boy and this trip away reminded us how amazing it’s been to travel with him to so many destinations over the past year too. 💛 Niagara Falls is such a jaw dropping sight to see!!! I love it so much. 🥹 The Falls are actually comprised of three waterfalls: the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and the biggest and most famous fall of all—the Canadian Horseshoe Falls. The falls are split across Canada and the U.S., and we have the better falls in my (and everyone’s) opinion lol. Horseshoe Falls is the most powerful waterfall in North America and Niagara Falls is considered a Wonder of the World! ✨ Did you know more than 6 million cubic feet of water go over the Horseshoe Falls every MINUTE during peak daytime hours in the summer? At a speed of between 50-70 km/h. And the crestline of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls is 2,200 feet wide! Just staggering stats! 🤯 The name Niagara is thought to have a few possible origins including as an Iroquoian word, “Onguiaahra” meaning The Strait or another meaning “Thunder Waters.” The water that feeds the falls comes from The Great Lakes, the world’s largest surface freshwater system. The Falls have been eroding over the years (natural but also climate impacted) and scientists think that the American Falls may entirely dry up in 2,000 years. 🥹 We daytripped quickly once from Toronto many years ago and were excited to explore even more of the area this weekend. 💛 Our weekend had been planned before any eclipse detail had been publicized so we just missed the eclipse viewing but did get this commemorative eclipse falls photo as part of our boat tour. 🤣 (last photo in the post) I do recommend the boat tour (and Journey Behind the Falls) if you ever visit Niagara. Back to Amsterdam 🇳🇱! … content 😅 Though we do hope to visit the Netherlands again sooner than later—our Amsterdam trip was amazing. 🥹 While we loved exploring the Dutch Capital, just a short 20 minute drive or 1 hour public transit ride south east of Amsterdam you can do a very cool day trip to @Muiderslot Castle 🏰, one of the oldest, best preserved and most famous castle in the country, first built in the 1200s. Baby’s first historic Castle!! 😍 The castle is surrounded by water (there’s a moat 💦!), and it’s been a national museum since 1878. You can access audio tours included with admission, which includes all sorts of details about the historic objects, paintings, rooms and history of the castle from the 17th century and the Middle Ages. One of the tours is specially made for kids too! This was a really fun experience, one of @mikethyking’s favourite attractions during our Amsterdam trip! (castles are kind of his thing lol). It was very cool seeing how the Castle was once used, and imagining the many people who once roamed the halls (and dungeons 😮☠️). Admission to #Muiderslot Castle is also FREE if you get an #IAmsterdamCard for your travels, which we received from @iamsterdam for a few days to experience the area. 🌖✨🚀 We are, each of us, a little universe. ✨ What a beautiful, out-of-this-world experience we had this week at @fabriquedeslumieres, as part of our visit to Amsterdam. We went on a trip across the universe at Destination Cosmos, an immersive space experience that took us through a galaxy of stars, planets, nebulae and supernovae and more. 🌍 It was actually the final day of the experience (they switch it out every few months like art exhibits) and I feel lucky we got to see it before it ended. 💛 We’ve been totally amazed at the sheer number of museum / art / experiences in this city. We have been switching back and forth between visiting “old” / historic to “new” / modern, basically doing one a day, and have barely scratched the surface of what’s available in Netherland’s capital. 🇳🇱 I really liked how this experience told the story of human space exploration through a mix of thoughtful text, big immersive video and animation, and pretty intense and powerful music. Of course, it being Instagrammable is always a perk lol. Thanks for hosting us, @fabriquedeslumieres! A bit of travel parenting reality - Benjimin’s legs are bare in the photo because he had just peed out of his diaper and we forgot to pack an extra change of clothes / pants. 🥲😀 (he has a warm stroller cover, we just had to park the stroller before going in lol). While exploring Phoenix and Scottsdale, Arizona 🌵🏜️, we love love LOVED our stay at the iconic, mid-century modern x cool contemporary hotel @HotelValleyHo! 🌴 This hotel is located in historic @OldTownScottsdale, Arizona, just a short walk from hundreds of shops, restaurants and art galleries. It was first built in 1956 and has since been fully restored with really fun rooms and lots of pops of colour. It’s seriously so cool! We also thought everyone who worked here was so friendly, from the valet and luggage team to the front desk to our @EatAtZuZu Restaurant servers to the pool staff and everyone in between. Also it’s a resort with no resort fees! 🥰 Speaking of the restaurant, eat here! We loved our brunch at ZuZu. Cinnamon roll bread pudding, steak frites (add eggs to make it breakfast 😉), breakfast fried rice and cocktails! @ImNittyTheKitty 🐱 visits Abraham Lake! 🐾💛🩷🏔️ * this was a few weeks ago not during our current Deep Freeze 🥶 lol. In fact it was so warm ☀️ a few weeks ago (what a stark difference 😳), that most of the lake (which is more famously known as the Bubble Lake 🫧) wasn’t frozen yet 😭. So Nitty didn’t get to see the ice lake bubbles but she did get to walk—er slide—on some ice in the meowntains lol. If you are making the trip out, there should definitely be more ice and more bubbles over the next few weeks/months lol (be SAFE!). I do have a travel guide about visiting the Bubble Lake on my blog too! I need to update it to include my favourite restaurant recommendation in the area (Nordegg / David Thompson County), which is Bang’s Bistro, an amazing little sushi spot located in Rocky Mountain House which you should pass to get to the area! 🍣 It is so good!! It’s that time of year! the, what day is it? period. feeling unproductive (but rest is good!) and of course, reflections and recaps. ✨ I’m casually counting down my most popular blog posts of 2023 and was delighted to see my 2018 Travel Guide to La Spezia and the Cinque Terre famous five seaside villages in Italy 🇮🇹 was one of the most visited posts of the year! In fact most of my top blogs are travel guides. 💛 I’m so happy so many of you trust my recommendations, use my guides, and copy my itineraries!! Much more of that to come in 2024. 🥰 If Italy 🇮🇹 is on your travel bucket list, I can’t recommend a stop at La Spezia and Cinque Terre enough. Looking back on these photos, I can’t believe we were there—such a stunningly beautiful and quiet place (at least compared to the hustle and bustle of Rome). La Spezia is a charming port city in the north, known as the “Gateway to Cinque Terre”: Italy’s famous five villages you’ve likely seen in all of Italy’s tourism photos— with their picturesque, colourful buildings that sit along the mountainside. 🏔️ Cinque Terre, pronounced “chink-kwa tear-eh”, literally translates to five villages. These are Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso. The seaside villages are located minutes from each other via train, which conveniently departs from La Spezia, but you can also hike to each village too. The area is actually considered a National Park, and the hike between villages is a popular one that’ll give you breathtaking views! We didn’t hike on our visit back in 2018 but I totally would on a return trip. One of Phoenix’s best and easiest hikes—located just minutes 🚗 from downtown PHX and the airport—is the iconic Hole-in-the-Rock Trail 🏜️ at Papago Park. This is a super short half km hike with hardly any elevation (14m lol) making it a must-stop for pretty much anyone visiting the area!! 🧡 The unique sandstone red butte formations include a literal hole in the rock (actually two! The main one and one higher up that some people do climb to as well), that overlooks nearby lagoons and the distant downtown Phoenix skyline! The formation is thought to have been used by the ancient Hohokam civilization to track the position of the sun through a hole in the rock "ceiling." 🟠 You know I’m all about low effort high reward adventure 😂 so this is just that. Such a pretty and distinctive Arizona view that’s for all ages! Pool day at the @PhoenicianScottsdale!! ☀️💦💛 It was amazing. 🥰 Outdoor dining is always nice but even better when you add a pool—that’s vacation dining math. 😌 The Phoenician is an AAA Five Diamond 💎💎💎💎💎 luxury resort that first opened in 1988, set against the Camelback Mountain in the Sonoran Desert, Scottsdale (Greater Phoenix), Arizona region. 🏜️ The resort is massive!! And its beautiful tiered pools are just one of its vacation selling features. If you’re into golf, they’ve got an 18-hole course. ⛳️ You want to work out? State-of-the-art athletic club with tennis and Pickleball courts. 🎾 Eat? Eagerly awaiting Bubble Lake weather! ✨🩵 We’ve got our visit planned for later this season. 🥰 Going to show off this marvel to a California friend. 🥹 If you’ve never been, I have a guide to the world-renowned Alberta Bubble Lake over on my blog (link in bio). There’s actually several lakes in the Canadian Rockies that get bubble conditions but the most famous one—that’s pictured in this post—is Abraham Lake near Nordegg 🫧 🏔️. It’s really its own day trip. Bring skates and mitts and brace for wind! Try to avoid going right after a snowfall (so the lake isn’t covered by snow!) As with any frozen lake situation, please be very careful. Remember you’re visiting the Bubble Lake at your own discretion. The weather and temperatures shift all the time so use your best judgment (and look up @redcrosscanada ice safety tips) when deciding if you should skate or walk across the lake. An ab-sea-lutely amazing ocean view of the Victoria. B.C. harbour from our 10th floor room at the @coastvictoriahotel. 😍🥰✨ We partnered with @coasthotels on this trip and love that they're all about being #RefreshinglyLocal. Coast Victoria makes an amazing base for your local experiences! Don't even take my word for it, take how close it is to all the local places you want to check out on the island: ✨ 1 min walk to the harbour (hail a Water Taxi just outside the hotel or go for a walk all along the harbour). ✨ 4 min walk to Fisherman's Wharf (brightly coloured shops, fish market, whale watch from the dock!) ✨ 10 min walk to the B.C. Parliament Buildings (first built in the 1800s! Old, massive, beautiful—and lights up at night). ✨ 15 min walk to the Visitors Centre (right in the busiest intersection of downtown and more harbour access). ✨ 25 min walk to Market Square, filled with tons of shops and restaurants and on the side of former Fort Victoria. ✨ 30 min walk to historic Chinatown—the oldest Chinatown in all of Canada! Lots of places to eat, shop and explore including the famous Fan Tan Alley. ✨ 30 min walk to The Breakwater, a 1.6 km cement structure trail on the water that takes you on the Juan de Fuca Strait to a lighthouse where you can see all the harbour traffic (cruise ships, ferries, sailboats, float planes, helicopters and more) that need to pass through to reach Victoria. ... and that's just to name a FEW of the amazing walking distance locations in / around downtown Victoria / harbour you could be exploring with the Coast as your conveniently located base. This weekend we are visiting beautiful Victoria, B.C. for the very first time! 💗 We got a bit of rainy weather but then it cleared up. We've had a lot of fish, almost saw orcas (and we weren't even on a tour!) and visited the oldest Chinatown in Canada 🏮 (more on those in later posts!!) Also stunned by the sheer size of the British Columbia Parliament Buildings (partially pictured in the background here). Massive. 🤯 The heritage buildings face the harbour and were first constructed in 1893. We didn't realize until this trip that Victoria is the capital of B.C. and that this is where people go when they say they're going to Vancouver Island. ⛴️😅 (there's other areas on the island too). Super cool! I'll be doing a little Victoria travel guide on the blog based on this visit but also I haven't gotten my Alberta to B.C. road trip blog done yet and that happened in June. After scouring the marketplace for over a year, and talking about one day getting a motor home for many years before that, @mikethyking and I finally found the perfect used but renovated RV 🚐 to take our road trip and camping adventures to the next level!! 🤩🥳 Our new RV—tentatively named Emmie 🥰—fits the whole fam (Olive and Artie 🐶🐕 , @imnittythekitty 🐱, Thor & Loki 🐈🐈 if they want to come eventually lol), Benjimin 👶🏻 and us! When in Medicine Hat, you have to experience "Sharing Stories at the Saamis Tepee" with local Indigenous artist and storyteller Brenda Mercer. 💛 We had the absolute pleasure of meeting Brenda during our recent @TourismMedicineHat trip. Located at the World’s Largest Tepee, Brenda and Davie James share stories about their journey to connect with their culture, and taught us about the Indigenous practice of smudging. We were told that why people smudge is very individual, but can be to remove negative energy from life, or to approach something with good intentions. As part of the experience, we also picked our own sage to smudge. Sage grows plentiful in Medicine Hat and is one of the four sacred medicines (sage, sweetgrass, tobacco, and cedar)! We also got to drum using beautiful drums Brenda makes! She showed us the first one she ever made using bison hide, and then let us pick a drum to use for a drumming and singing part of the experience. This was so special already and then Brenda gifted me the drum I had picked for our drumming! 😭💛 It’s painted with a turtle (to represent Turtle Island—North America), and a Medicine Wheel. Brenda had said she felt I needed to go home with that drum. This was such a beautiful surprise!! 🥹 You may make a medicine pouch or take home a medicine box during this experience too. Afterwards, we popped into the Visitor Centre where Brenda displays handmade jewellery. I was happy to add a piece to my ever-growing collection. We came across a very big bear 🐻 in Kamloops! Baby Benjimin for scale. ✨🤭 We loved the Kamloops stop of our Alberta-B.C. road trip 🚗! Didn't have a ton of time there but I was glad we could check out this stunning bear mural by local artist Kelly Wright @artistkgw. When it was created in 2018, the community was invited to throw water balloons filled with paint at the wall. 🎨 Afterwards, Kelly used the colours of the splattered paint as fill for the beautiful grizzly bear. A lovely piece for the community.
