After one of the most difficult years of my life, to say I needed an escape from reality would be an understatement. Although this wasn’t the most relaxing trip (because we were jam packed with activities throughout the week) I’m grateful to have spent some time with my good friend, Mary Catherine, exploring beautiful Sedona, Arizona and the surrounding areas. Sedona is best known for its beautiful red rocks that emanate a powerful healing energy. The entire city is considered to be a vortex, however there are specific vortex sites that are thought to be swirling centers of energy which are conducive to healing, meditation and self-exploration. This photo was taken along the Boynton Canyon Trail, one of the most powerful vortexes in Sedona. Hiking to the top of this location was completely out of my comfort zone. I’m terrified of heights so hiking is not usually on my radar and let’s be real, we all know I’m more of a beach bum anyway. But I didn’t find this hike scary at all, it was actually very peaceful and absolutely stunning. Definitely not an easy hike, especially with my camera in hand, but I managed and I’m proud of myself for making it to the top. While staying in Sedona, we also made our way to Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon and the Grand Canyon. Exploration A few years ago, I was encouraged to choose a word for the year. This word should remind me of what I want to focus on that year. I don’t recall the words I chose from previous years, and I didn’t bother picking one for this year until recently. The word “Explore” keeps popping up in conversations, and when I think about my goals, many seem to align with exploring the world. I recently did a Core Values exercise and several words related to exploration were on my first list. Learning, Curiosity, Adventure, and Exploration are all words that feel important to me, but Exploration seemed the best choice. I find getting out and walking in an area that is new to me doesn’t feel like exercise, while walking in my neighborhood or on the treadmill does. Exploration feels like fun, satisfies my curiosity, I connect with nature, and I almost always learn something new. Do you enjoy exploring new places? Share where you want to explore next.

Have you been to Gila Box?🌳⛺️ On Friday we tried to make it to Owl Creek Campground before dark. However, there was an accident on the US 60 that closed the highway so we had to take an alternative route which made us get to the campground after dark! It was extremely windy which made setting up our tent difficult, but we tried to anchor our rain fly with heavy rocks. The wind continued over night, but when we woke up we were greeted with the incredible view of the Gila River and the Old Safford Bridge🏞️🦦 Everything you need to know⬇️ 🚮 Please remember to Leave No Trace ⛺️ Owl Creek Campground is in Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area and is managed by @arizonapubliclands . There are only 7 campgrounds and they are first come, first serve. Each site has a shade structure, fire pit, and grill. It is $5 a night. Our campground was near the cliff edge and overlooked the Gila River. Can you spot our tent in the first photo? 🚱 Owl Creek is a dry campground with no potable water tap 🚽 There is a single vault toilet at the campground 🚙 Owl Creek is about 3.5 hours from the Phoenix area and 2.5 hours from Tucson. You need to drive down a primitive road. We recommend having at least a cross over vehicle to drive on these roads. The closest town is Clifton 🗺️ Use Google Maps over Apple Maps to route to the campground. Apple Maps is wrong! We recommend downloading the area for offline use 📱There is decent cellphone service with Verizon at the campground 🛶 There is a day use river launch area for kayaks and paddleboards near the bridge. We saw a group of kayakers launch from there 🛣️ Blackhills Scenic Byway continues after the bridge.
