Alley Twenty Six Brasstown Beef Hot Dog Dog: 10/10. This all natural, uncured, premium beef hot dog in natural lamb casing from @brasstownbeef was just amazing! The perfectly crunchy-snappy casing was scored, almost spiral cut, before cooking. The beef flavor, enhanced by just the right amount of salt and spices, was unmatched!🐂 Brasstown humanely and environmentally sustainably raises cattle on grass in the mountains of NC! The care in their process is noticed in the end product! Bun: 8.9/10. This buttery bun was well toasted and structurally sound, a fitting delivery vessel for such a hot dog. Toppings: 8/10. I ordered mine with pimento cheese. The pimento cheese was super rich, almost to a fault. You can see it glisten. Kraut is the only other option listed which is a bummer because other menu items have some tasty toppings(bourbon bacon jam!) that’d be great on a dog, imo. Atmosphere: 9/10. @alleytwentysix is an incredible craft cocktail bar and restaurant located in Downtown Durham, NC. In fact, they have been a James Beard Restaurant and Chef Award for Outstanding Bar Program nominee! Their bartenders have a huge wall of spirits + their house made syrups and bitters to concoct the perfect liquid refreshment for you! Like what you had to drink? Alley Twenty Six sells their syrups and bitters to elevate your cocktails made at home. The kitchen executes an exquisite variety of dishes and has a massive selection of caviar and tinned fish, too.🐟 The hot dog is served on their late night menu after 10p.m. Crave: 8.1/10. I’d get a dog on a return visit! Overall: 44/50. I fell in love with P.E.I. mussels at Alley Twenty Six. Now I’ve fallen for Brasstown Beef. @eatstk Charlotte 📍 pictured is the Smoked Pork Belly - was not a fan of this, it had strong tart taste. Smoke salmon - had a weird vinegar taste. Hot chicken & waffle - waffles were soaked in oil. *Experience* went with a party of 8 for brunch. The restaurant almost empty with that being said the service was horrible. It took 15 mins for our waiter to take our drink orders and an additional 20 mins to get water in which we had to get the attention of another staff member for water. The drinks ordered sat at the bar for a long time causing the ice to melt. Management appeared to be oblivious to the situation although they could see we were not being helped. STK Charlotte definitely needs to self-evaluate and improve the customer experience. Denton, NC. Dropped into the Old Country Store in Denton, a place I've been getting dogs ever since I can remember. My grandmother used to buy me as many as I could eat back in the day, and I think they were 50 cents each. They are under new ownership and switched up their chili and slaw, which I hate to say. I think they are getting from next door at Troutman's bbq. It is good slaw and chili but not like the old slaw they used to serve, which was a sweet marinated slaw with no mayo. They still serve red dogs, which I was very happy to see; not as good as they used to be, but I'm sure I'll be back for more. Points deducted for cheating on toppings. A local gem adorned with various plants and an artful wall displaying motifs signature to Durham. The @clochecoffee space offers a sanctuary to shelter and recharge much like how a cloche would cover and protect plants from the elements. Another good #CaffeineCrawl visit. Scott gave a presentation @openeyecafenc in their @carrborocoffee lab. The focus was on the importance of Farmer Direct Relationships as well as different processing styles and their effect on taste profile. We discussed how different coffees require a different roast. Jacob and Mark provided samples of three Farmer Direct Coffees. We visited their original roasting room, in this Carrboro space. We could have easily stayed twice the amount of time at this informative #CaffeineCrawl stop.
Ryan @graysquirrelcoffee did an excellent job of keeping us caffeinated by breaking down their Suite C House Blend into its parts - Guatemala Huehuetanango, Ethopian Sidamo, and Colombia, as samples. We followed by also having the finished blend. Very informative discussion of the cafe, the inhouse roasting, and other cafe quality focuses like the housemade syrups. It was fun exploring their inside and popular patio space on today’s #CaffeineCrawl.
Shayda graduated with a degree not related to the culinary world, and not long after entering the working world realized she wanted to pursue her true passion. She saved up money, studied at Cordon Bleu and started @sweetsbyshayda. Her and her staff welcomed us with a delightful sample tray with madeleines, lavender cake, and various flavors of macarons. The artful display of all her offerings were impossible to resist, and were tasty treats for #CaffeineCrawl.
Our first outdoor coffee experience of the day always embraces the nature component of the shop. @caffedriadenc is right behind @carrborocoffee Chapel Hill location, and seating is incorporated into the woods and trail that leads to the Greenway. Kara and her team made two very different combo drinks for us that we all loved on our #CaffeineCrawl stop. The first was a ginger beer cold brew combing the two, and that was followed by a pink matcha latte using a powder grapefruit from @arteaolife. We learned about how they work closely with the roastery just feet away, but also put their spin on supporting each coffee’s flavor notes.

Such good energy with Jaimie @epiloguebooksch for our two #CaffeineCrawl stops today. The shop itself focuses on more unique and indie printed books reaching out to a very diverse reader. Jaimie shared stories and examples of incorporating his Mexican heritage into the drinks and food. We each had a delicious churro and a frozen cocoa drink from @viderichocolate in Raleigh. They also have a goal for their staff to reflect the diversity in the books they carry.
Our oldest building stop on today’s #CaffeineCrawl was @1922byccs, who opened when @carolinacoffeeshop turned 100. CCS is next door, and created the sister shop to cater more to a specialty coffee shop focus. AG shared with us about the shop’s history and about the drink they served, an iced horchata latte.
Science and agriculture in liquid form from Carly at her new @borobeverage shop. We sampled 3 different kombuchas of her’s - Elderberry and ginger, strawberry herb, and the garden sangria. All made there, and that was a very educational intro into the history of kombucha making, and all the particulars about this fermented tea. She has been doing this for a while, and that stemmed out of her love for making food more sustainable and extending the life of food. We had to ask her about her @goodfoodawards during these #CaffeineCrawl visits.
Two fascinating drink creations were prepared for us @perennialchapelhill on 2 routes of #CaffeineCrawl. Perennial tries to grow as much of the herbs they use as possible, which is impressive if you know Franklin St. Both used in these drinks - the Perennial Grow using the Ethiopia Ardi cold brew, a strawberry-mint oat milk foam , and the other drink the popular Tiger Tiger. This drink used a Thai tea with coconut milk, activated charcoal, and coconut-basil whip cream. We chatted about ingredients that work well with coffee and what type of clientele the college spot has.
Jess and Bjorn with @pplscoffee shared some of their partner products for our #CaffeineCrawl stop. We had two different @smashedwaffles options alongside an affogato vanilla milkshake and the smoothie berry using @coldoffthepress. Jesse shared info about their new shop in Pittsboro, and Bjorn about @fivestarcoffeeco. That was topped off with a shot of espresso! They hosted us on their shady patio, and we had some good chats about their UNC NIL relationships.
A full roastery experience @carrborocoffee with a starting cup from Moran of Honduras. Lane started us with a tour, and sharing details about each stage, whether green coffee, the roaster, or lab space. Their relationship with coffee farmers is one of the best in the country, and we learned a lot about each place and farmer. We wrapped up with three different coffees toeing in the farmer relationships and different coffee processes. We had the (last name of farmer) Pira of Guatemala, Giammattei of El Salvador, and Balladarez of Nicaragua.
